]]>Chairman of Nepal Airsports Association (NAW), Krishna Bhandari, stated that the tour operators would be permitted to restart the tourism activities.
As the government decided to roll back the prohibitory order which restricted activities due to the global pandemic.
“We have already organized a paragliding safety and awareness program to resume the service. Similarly, the condition of paragliding devices has been checked,” the Chairman said. “All the paragliding companies have successfully conducted test flights before resuming the flights, and the resumption is likely in a couple of days.”
Paragliding is a mainstay activity of Pokhara. The adventure tourism activity started in Pokhara in 1999. Currently, Pokhara has 60 paragliding companies and 350 pilots who are in the paragliding tourism sector. 15 of the 350 pilots are foreigners.
The sector has NPR 1 billion investment strapped on, and 1,000 people are directly employed and connected to the sector. After the first wave of Covid-19 subsided, the companies offered 50-60 percent discount to the customers. The discounts attracted a lot of domestic tourists to Pokhara.
The paragliding operators will have to decide the new fares said the NAW General Secretary Balaram Acharya.

]]>The pristine Himalayas pose a trekking challenge to tourists and Nepalis alike, but replete one with delightful surprises. Apart from trekking, one can do a great deal of many things in Nepal. Ranging from rafting to bungee jumping, Nepal has a lot to offer to adventure- and thrill-seekers.
However, these activities are somewhat offbeat as Nepal’s main attraction has always been trekking.
In this article, we shall explore the offbeat activities which are relatively lesser known to the world.
1) Bungee Jumping
Bungee jumping is one of the most popular activities among adventurists. While trekking is all about meticulously climbing the mountains, bungee is about jumping off from a high point with a tether attached. Thankfully, Nepal boasts this activity. The Last Resort in Sindhupalchok offers bungee jumping to the seekers.
Apart from this resort, the activity has been opened up in other locations as well. The High Grounds Adventure in Pokhara, and the suspension bridge in Kusma, offer the thrill of bungee jumping. This is one of the activities which is catching up with the others.
2) Rafting
Nepal’s Himalayan rivers are a different experience in itself. The rivers of Nepal are gorgeous and pack turbidity enough to provide a memorable rafting experience. The excitement and the deafening sound of the rapids make the experience priceless. One of the best experiences can be found on the Trishuli river as rafting here is moderately complex.
The much more adventurous rafting will be found in Seti river. This river has enough rapids to make rafting a great experience. The Karnali and Bheri rivers are also thronged by rafters who are in West Nepal.
3) Rock Climbing
Rock climbing is a sport that is tougher than it looks. Centering the weight on the feet firmly, one ought to move up using the hands without resting any bodyweight on them. The movement coordination and strain are not everyone’s cup of tea, but it sure provides an exhilarating experience.
One can go rock climbing in Pasang Lhamu Climbing Centre or Astrek Climbing wall, where one can climb walls before going rock climbing. The wall climbing will help you understand how to go rock climbing later on. In addition, one can test their rock-climbing skills in Hattiban, Bimalnagar, and Monjo.
4) Mountain Biking
Nepal is a landlocked Himalayan country with ample terrain for mountain biking. The mountain regions are not only suitable for trekking but also for biking stunts.

The mountain trail in Annapurna Circuit, Upper Dolpo, and Khaptad provide enough airborne thrills to the seekers. Langtang National Park is also one of the places where bikers get their thrills.
5) Ice Climbing
Climbing upon the hardened ice sheets is an experience not dissimilar to rock climbing. The sport is favored by trekkers and adventurists who are mountaineering in Nepal. However, this is an activity that is not for all as ice presents a considerable challenge to the trekkers
One can scale the icy scapes in Humde in Manang and Thame in Khumbu, where ice is aplenty to climb. It is advised to go fully prepared with the gear and knowledge as to how to climb the icy slopes.
6) Paragliding
The mountains of Nepal will provide a picturesque gliding memory to all. There are various hill ranges of Nepal where one can glide. The hill ranges of Gorkha, Kot Danda, Godavari, Surkhet, Phulchoki, and Bandipur are visited by the aviation thrill-seekers. However, if you are a novice, it is better to glide with an instructor as the hills pose a deadly threat to the untrained.
7) Skydiving
Everest is the highest point in the world. However, skydiving above Everest is an emotion that is better felt than expressed. Nepal has allowed skydiving activities around Mount Everest, and skydivers can see the rooftop of the world. If one cannot skydive over Mt. Everest, there is always the Pokhara mountain range where one can dive into.
Capping it off
Nepal not only has snowcaps to offer but a lot more. It is a haven to unwind and reconnect with the adventurous side of yours. With due caution and proper gear, indulge in the fun that not many know of and have the time of your life.

“Play for the country and medals, there will be sizeable increment in the prize money that government had provided in previous editions. Sports is a great medium to unite nations,” Khatiwada said in a statement.
“Players need to prepare well without being bothered about the rewards or the opposition. Athletes should be stubborn to win medals. Everything else will fall in place,” Nepal Olympic Committee president Jeevan Ram Shrestha said.

]]>Yes, Paragliding is going to be played at the 8th Nepal National Games scheduled to be held across Province 5 from April 18, 2019.
In a recent release, Nepal National Sports Council informed that the paragliding competition would be organized at Pokhara from April 19, 2019.
This will be the first time that paragliding will be played part of the National Games.
According to General Secretary at the Nepal Paragliding and Hang Gliding Association Shailendra Raut, Nepal Army and 46 men & 9 women participants are participating in the competition for six gold medals. A team of 14 athletes including 10 men and 4 women from Tribhuvan Army Club are in the game.
The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) designated Nepal Airsports Association (NAA) as the sole authority for paragliding and hang gliding.
NAA’s appointment as the designated authority has come in view of increasing paragliding-related accidents reported as a result of weak monitoring and improper supervision.

]]>The Asian Games 2018 or ASIAD 2018, held in Indonesia from August 18-September 02, 2018, saw 45 nations, 465 events in 40 sports and a total of 11,646 athletes participating in it.
The pan-Asian multi-sport event saw Nepal alone fielding a total of 185 players in 29 different games including Archery, Paragliding, Football, Table Tennis, Kabaddi, Volleyball, Swimming, Athletics, Judo, Taekwondo, Boxing, Golf, Weightlifting, Basketball, among others.
Despite sincere attempts, the country had to return only with a single medal i.e. the ‘silver medal’ in the paragliding category on August 29, 2018 and also saw new national records in weightlifting.
It is noteworthy that Nepal bagged victory even in the International Paragliding Competition held in Swarek of Syangja, Nepal during November 1-6, 2017.
A Rare Honor
Lauding the winning performance of Nepali paragliders, the Government of Nepal felicitated the paragliding team and key members behind it with a rare honor.
In a program organized by the National Sports Council (NSC) on September 03, 2018, the government offered cash rewards to key players of the Nepali paragliding team, the team coach and other local associations that support the sport over the period.
The Minister for Youth and Sports Jagat Bahadur Bishwakarma, NSC Member Secretary Keshav Kumar Bista and Chairman of the Nepal Olympic Committee Jeevan Ram Shrestha respected the players with cash rewards of Rs 500,000 each, the Chief Coach Yogesh Bhattarai with Rs 300,000 cash and the Assistant Coach Sanu Babu Shrestha with Rs 150,000 in cash and letter of appreciation.
Sports association also received a Rs 500,000 cash prize for supporting the players and the game.
Nepal Paragliding and Hang Gliding Associations also received a cash rewards worth Rs 500,000 each and Sports Manager Shailesh Raut received a ‘Letter of Appreciation’.
Bishal Thapa, Sushil Gurung, Bijay Gautam, Yukesh Gurung, Bimal Adhikari were among the key persons who received rare honor at the program organized by the National Sports Council (NSC) in Kathmandu on September 03, 2018.
Despite a Challenging Scenario
Medals apart, the country’s sports fraternity considers this as a successful attempt for Nepal in the global sports arena.
In a statement prior to the event, the Nepal Sports Council (NSC) said the ’participation’ in the ASIAD 2018 event itself is a great achievement for Nepal and its athletes.
“Participation in the Asian Games itself is like winning medals for players of Nepal,” said NSC Member Secretary Keshab Kumar Bista, speaking on the sidelines of the Asian Games 2018.
Bista was happy that the country could manage to field 185 players despite the discouraging records in the past global sports events that did not position the country as expected.
To everyone’s surprise, the country’s 29 sports teams did not even get a chance to undergo proper training for ASIAD 2018 and did not turn back despite the challenging situation.
Besides, the announcements in all these 29 categories were made just two weeks ahead of the tournament, which made it a rare feat for the Nepali participants in ASIAD 2018.
Till ASIAD 2018, Nepal had won 23 medals including a silver and 22 bronze medals in the last 15 Asian Games participation they participated in since 1951.
Whereas the ASIAD 2018 that ended on September 02, 2018 saw the country winning ‘one silver, four national records and a total of 24 wins including all events’ adding to its sports victory bank.
Expectations & Realities
Among 29 sports events that Nepal fielded its participants, the country expected a lot from Taekwondo, Swimming, Kabaddi, among other sports.
With a strong history of holding 14 out of 23 medals that the country won until ASIAD 2018, Nepali taekwondo team was high on expectations in the Asian Games 2018 for its team strength that had the most successful players- Deepak Bista, Sangina Baidhya, Badri Prasad Ghimire and Norbu Lama.
Swimming is another category that the country expected a lot from in the Asian Games 2018, majorly because of the country’s swimming sensation Gaurika Singh.
Another is the Kabaddi team, a classic example of breaking the barriers! ‘Participation’ in the Asian Games 2018 itself was a tough scenario for the Nepali kabaddi team.
The kabaddi team made it to the Asian Games 2018 after a long gap of 19 years, 18 months after the previous editions of Asian Games held in Beijing.
However, the kabaddi team’s entry in the Asian Games 2018 was backed by the encouragement that the team drew from the 2010 South Asian Games by winning ‘Bronze’ medal and the 2nd position in the International Invitational Men’s Kabaddi Tournament.
Karate is another category that was high on expectation for its rich background of bringing in three bronze medals for the country in the Asian Games and also as the winner of the medal in the 2014 Incheon ASIAD.
Boxing, the other category with a history of giving six bronzes to the country, ended up with nothing in Asian Games 2018.
Despite winning medals, few wins in some categories gave new hope to the country to perform well in the events to come. They were:
On an End Note
Be it in cricket, football or any other sport that the country is famous for, relentless efforts and strong will to shine at the international level have been the unique aspects of Nepali athletes that are pushing ahead the country in the world sports.
More local support in the form of training and related efforts by government and local sports groups like NSC will empower the country’s athletes perform more better.
Overall, the Asian Games 2018 has been a ‘fight against tide’ for the Nepali sportspersons and must have given them more confidence needed to face the events to come.
Hard Work has no substitute. Keep up the spirit Nepal!

Nepali paragliding men’s team performed at their best to finally bring a ‘silver medal’ for the country.
As the authorities cut down the race duration from 25 km-12.5 km, Nepali team had to undergo a tough competition in the rush hour of the paragliding race that was badly hit by weather conditions.
After an exceptional performance, the team fell short of 28 points and found its place next to Japan missing a ‘gold medal’.
The Nepali team comprised of Bijay Gautam, Bimal Adhikari, Sushil Gurung, Ukesh Gurung and Bimla Thapa, who altogether earned 2797 points in today’s round pushing the total score to 11,364 points.
Meanwhile, the Japanese team earned 2057 points in the today’s round taking their count to 11,391 points to win the event.
The Nepali team drew wide appreciation for bringing the country back to fame in the international arena after a 20-year-long wait since Sarita Rajbhandari got a ‘silver’ in Taekwondo in 1998.
“This is the biggest achievement for us. This win and the medal are for all the Nepali people,” says buoyant Coach Yogesh Bhattarai.
Nepali skipper Bimal Adhikari lauded the team at their success and expressed hope the country would win more medals in the upcoming competitions.
With this victory, Nepal has so far won two ‘silver medals’ in the Asian Games 2018 till date accounting to the all-time medal count of 24.
