Nepal Gets a New Health Minister

Prime Minister Sher Deuba has inducted Umesh Shrestha as the Minister for Health and Population. The cabinet of five ministers is expanding with Umesh’s entry.

Umesh, who also happens to be the owner of Little Angel’s School, has been a member of the Nepali Congress party for a few years now.

However, as per the Presidential Office, the Prime Minister continues to hold the health ministry portfolio for now.

The centralized power-hold has drawn criticism, and the Prime Minister is firing on all cylinders to expand his cabinet. The expansion is consuming time as he has to negotiate with the coalition partners to enable the induction.

With Umesh’s induction, the 5-minister cabinet has expanded to 6 ministers. The cabinet’s populace also includes the Prime Minister and two Ministers from his own party. The other two ministers are from CPN-Maoist Centre.
