Nepal is all set to prove its mettle against the USA once again in the triangular series as part of the ICC World Cup Cricket League 2.

The match will start at 4:15 PM today at the Al Amerat Cricket Ground in Oman.

After facing a defeat against Oman in their second match of the tri-series, the Himalayan team is looking for a win against the American team today evening.

Al Amerat Cricket Ground in Oman

Oman defeated Nepal by 5 wickets in the match held on September 14, 2021.

Despite losing the second match, Nepal is looking strong against the USA as it had already defeated the American team in the first match.

In the match against the USA, Nepal won by 5 wickets. Let’s hope the Nepali cricket team repeats the same in the match today.

On the other hand, the USA lost both the matches it played so far in the tri-series.

However, Nepal should be cautious that the American team is in second spot with 12 points from 14 matches.

The Himalayan team is in sixth position with just six points from six matches.

Paras Khadka, the face of Nepali cricket, has announced his retirement from international cricket.

“With utmost clarity, respect and gratitude, I have now decided to retire myself from playing international cricket,” tweeted Khadka.

The former captain of the national cricket team started his cricket career in 2002 in the Asian Cricket Council U-15 tournament. He made his debut for Nepal’s national team in 2004 in the Intercontinental Cup in Malaysia.

The 33-year-old cricketer led Nepal’s national team from the status of ‘Division 5 team,’ the lowest tier of international cricket, in 2010 to ‘one-day international (ODI) nation,’ the highest tier, in 2018. It is a rare achievement for any country to achieve that status in such a short period.

    Paras Khadka

Khadka even played a crucial role in qualifying Nepal for the 2014 T20 World Cup, the first time Nepal faced the top cricket nations in an ICC event.

“As the team leader, he deserved most of the credit for Nepal’s winning outcomes,” said Jagat Tamata, Nepal’s former coach.

“Besides that ability to motivate his team and the ability to make the right decision at the right time, luck also played a part in his becoming the most decorated cricketer of the country,” he added.

“Cricket was not very popular in Nepal until we played the 2014 T20 World Cup. The game’s popularity rose massively when Nepal played the World Cup in Bangladesh,” said Poudel.

Nepal’s top leg spinner Sandeep Lamichhane, who debuted in 2016 under Khadka’s leadership, said, “It was an amazing experience and a dream come true to play under Khadka’s captaincy.”

“He was always there whenever anyone in the team needed him. Not only was he a fantastic cricketer, but also a great motivator,” added Sandeep.

Khadka captained the national cricket team from 2009 to 2019, becoming the longest-serving overall international captain.

“This amazing journey on a cricket field as an international cricketer ends here, but the cricket dreams for my country have just started,” tweeted Khadka.

    ]]>
Even without his County-contracted players and New Zealand-based Logan van Beek – at least eight would very probably make the full squad for a big ICC tournament – Netherlands national coach Ryan Campbell has been able to select a strong group for the T20I tri-series against Nepal and Malaysia next month.

The side will be led by Pieter Seelaar, the veteran of 235 matches for the national side across all formats, whose left-arm spin has earned him 222 wickets, 61 of them in the T20 format. These days Seelaar is also a dangerous middle order batsman, his best in the shortest form an unbeaten 49-ball 96 in a losing cause against Scotland in 2019.

But he and Campbell will be hoping that his batting won’t be needed too often in Kathmandu, with a top-order which features Max O’Dowd (with an overall strike rate in T20s of 126.66), Tobias Visée (152.22), Ben Cooper (128.68) and wicketkeeper Scott Edwards (140.65).

Less experienced than these five but also capable of making quick runs are Tonny Staal (HCC) and Bas de Leede (Voorburg), both of whom will be keen to take their claim to a regular place in the side, and the same applies to teenage left-hander Vikram Singh (VRA Amsterdam), who has just a single cap so far but who will doubtless add more during this tournament.

T20I tri-series Netherlands, Nepal and Malaysia

De Leede is likely too to augment a pace attack which will be led by Paul van Meekeren and Viv Kingma, both genuinely quick and menacing, supported by Sebastiaan Braat (Hermes-DVS Schiedam), who has also shown himself to be a useful lower-order batter.

Apart from Seelaar himself, the squad’s spin options include the leg-breaks of Voorburg’s Philippe Boissevain, while there are two uncapped spinners in the side: HBS Craeyenhout’s Julian de Mey and Aryan Dutt (Voorburg). Dutt batted in the top five for his club last season, while De Mey’s batting has improved markedly recently.

The Netherlands lead Nepal 5-2 across their meetings in the T20 format, but Nepal have won the last two, a dead rubber in the last game of a four-match series in the Netherlands in 2015, and their encounter in the Desert T20 tournament in Oman in 2019.

The Dutch have never met Malaysia in a T20 International before, their only completed match in any format a 9-wicket victory in the 1994 ICC Trophy tournament in Nairobi.

Netherlands Cricket Squad: Tri-Nations T20I Series

A warm-up match before the 1997 tournament in Malaysia was rained off with the Netherlands well on top. Playing at 1300-metre elevation in Kathmandu will be a considerable test for both the

visiting sides, as will the passionate support they can expect for the Nepalese. With Malaysia sitting a division below the hosts in the ICC hierarchy and the Dutch fielding what is mostly a second string side, Nepal may well start as favorites.

But Campbell and Bilal Asad, his Malaysian counterpart, will be looking to their players literally to rise to the occasion and to demonstrate how effectively they can adapt on the international stage.

Former skipper of Nepal Paras Khadka has expressed his mission to win the ICC Cricket World Cup in the next 19 years.

In a press meet organised by Queens Event Management in Kathmandu, Khadka expressed his view about winning the World Cup, as the management company introduced a brand new U16 cricket tournament, the Baliyo Nepal Cup, aiming to uplift grassroots cricket in Nepal.

The Queens Event Management company is one of the pioneers in the Nepalese domestic cricket circuit which has successfully organised the premier T20 franchise leagues – the Pokhara Premier League and Women’s Champions League, until the outbreak of COVID-19.

    Nepal Paras Khadka Press Meet

This will be the third venture of the event management company towards cricket development and will be supported by the Baliyo Nepal initiative.

“We are on a mission to win the ICC Cricket World Cup within 2039. We have played a Cricket World Cup (T20) earlier, and we have aimed for at most 19 more years to win the ICC Cricket World Cup.

“Earlier, people used to laugh at us when we dreamt about playing the world cup in 2013-14, but then, we worked hard on the field and fulfilled our dream. This initiative is a pathway to our world cup winning dream”, Khadka, also the board member of the Baliyo Nepal initiative, told the press.

The Baliyo Nepal Initiative, works on the availability of nutritious diets to children, with a goal to make Nepal ‘a strong and malnutrition-free country’. The organisers announced that in the first phase, the Baliyo Nepal Cup will see the participation of 12 districts’ respective boys teams from the Lumbini Province, one among seven provinces of Nepal.

The tournament will be played in a T20 format, after carrying out talent hunts in schools of all districts in the province. In the latter stage of the young talent development program, the organisers have announced that the tournaments will be carried out all across the nation, to both boys and girls.

    Young Talent Development Program

“I think we all trust now that cricket in Nepal has a lot of potential. To fulfill our dream of winning the World Cup, we need to invest at the grassroots level, especially the school cricket. I wish luck to the organisers in finding young cricketers from nooks and corners of the country”, Gyanendra Malla, the current skipper of the Nepal Cricket Team, said in the press meet.

The talent hunt will be carried out from the 25-28th of April while the tournament is set to kick off from 3rd to 10th of April, in Lamahi District of Dang.

Nepali bowler Sandeep Lamichhane has set a new record in the match played against the USA under the ICC Cricket World Cup League 2 on February 12, 2020.

Lamichhane has registered the best figures by a Nepali bowler in a One Day International (ODI) match.

He grabbed 6 wickets of the USA giving away only 16 runs in 6 overs.

With his best spell of 6-1-16-6, Lamichhane surpassed Sompal Kami’s record of 5-wicket haul against the United Arab Emirates (UAE) last year.

    Nepali bowler Sandeep Lamichhane

Lamichhane’s bowling figures are seventh-best overall performance by a spinner and fifth-best by a leg-spinner in ODIs.

Best ODI Figures by a Leg-Spinner

    • Shahid Afridi – 7/12
    • Rashid Khan – 7/18
    • Muralitharan – 7/30
    • Imran Tahir – 7/45
    • Anil Kumble – 6/12
    • BAW Mendis – 6/13
    • Sandeep Lamichhane – 6/16

Best ODI Figures by a Leg-Spinner

Invited to bat first after losing the toss, the USA was restricted to 35 runs in 12 overs, the lowest ODI score. Now, the USA and Zimbabwe jointly hold the record of lowest ODI score in cricket history.

Earlier, Zimbabwe scored 35 runs against Sri Lanka in 2004. Lamichhane and his bowling partner Sushan Bhari collectively choked the opponent batsmen with their splendid spell. Lamichhane took the highest 6 wickets, while Bhari claimed 4 wickets.

Later, Nepal chased down the target in 5.2 overs to win the match by 8 wickets.

Nepal vs USA match became the shortest ever ODI in history as the play lasts for just 17.2 overs.

Nepal’s most-loved player and national team captain Paras Khadka arrived in Bhairahawa to train young cricketers on August 25, 2019.

In his interaction with the youngsters, the cricketing star advised them to balance studies and sports if they want to become successful cricketers.

Khadka said that it is possible to study and play cricket simultaneously. However, he added that it was important to manage time.

“If you dream of making it to the national team ignoring your studies, it is just a fantasy. You’d better practice cricket for a couple of hours a day instead of giving up studies and going to the cricket pitch round the clock,” said Khadka.

During the training session hosted by Star Cricket Academy, Khadka shared some cricket tips and his own batting and bowling experience with young cricketers from twenty local schools.

Meanwhile, Khadka also made a mention of the poor cricket infrastructure in Nepal and the absence of a strong cricket association.

Paras Khadka Shares Valuable Cricket Lessons

On the positive side, he informed that Nepal will be getting to play more international tournaments as the concerned authorities were working towards the development of physical infrastructure for cricket to flourish in Nepal.

On the occasion, Khadka awarded NPR 5000 each to Ranjit Maurya and Abishkhar Gyawali who had earlier bowled Khadka out in the event titled Bowl to Paras Khadka.

This year, Khadka was named Youth Icon for 2019 on March 19, 2019.

Nepal is currently preparing for the One-Day and Twenty20 International Series against the United Arab Emirates (UAE) scheduled to start on January 25, 2019.

With just two days away for the tournament, Nepali team’s Batting Consultant for the upcoming tournament, Indian Coach Umesh Patwal shared few important gaps and focus areas that the Nepal cricket team need to focus in the upcoming series.

In his interactions with a Nepal-based media house, Patwal said the team need to focus more on strategizing the ‘game sense’.

The Coach went on to explain that the Nepali team is good at ball sense but lacks in having a proper game plan while performing in tournaments.

“They pick up the ball well but the execution of shots, like when they should go for big shots and when they should go for singles, that’s where they are not very sure. The game plan is poor. They appear to be uncertain when to go after the bowlers and when to stick to the wicket,” reads Patwal’s statement.

    Nepal Cricket Team Lacks Competition

Speaking about gaps in Nepali team’s batting plan, Patwal said the team basically lacked tough competition in the tournaments they played.

Except for the T20 leagues, the Nepali team hasn’t faced a tough competition in their matches and would possibly feel some pressure in facing bowlers in the 50-over matches.

Experience in T20 matches gave the team the ability to chase short scores. But they might struggle in 50-over matches if the targets are around 250 runs as they haven’t batted long in the past, adds the Coach.

However, some of them can cope up by their character in the game.

“It’s a game, few guys could cope because of the way they are as a character. I believe that cricket is played by character but not the cricketers. And if you want match winners you need more characters. So hopefully if you find few characters in the team, you could still end up on the winning side,” says Patwal.

Overall, the Coach suggests the team needs good batting performance considering the previous records that hardly show best performers in the team except for Dipendra Singh Airee who performed well in one of the recent matches.

Will have to wait and see how the team performs in this second ODI International!

    About Umesh Patwal

Umesh Patwal is not a new name for Nepali cricket team. He was also the team’s coach for the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifiers in Zimbabwe in March 2018, and for Biratnagar Warriors in EPL 2018.

The Coach was also the Tournament Director for the Pokhara Premier League (PPL) 2018.

Some rise up to become stars, while others are genuinely born stars!

Nepal has produced one of the finest cricketers in the world cricket history and one of such legends is the Nepal Cricket Team Captain Paras Khadka! We all know how instrumental Khadka’s contribution has been in taking Nepali cricket to the level it is today.

Cricket is a craze in Nepal, after Football of course and has seen some new heights at the global level, majorly because of a few aspirants like Shakti Gauchan and Sandeep Lamichhane among others.

And, no doubt! Khadka’s role has always been instrumental!

    Paras Khadka’s Cricketing Journey

Even before playing for the senior side, Kathmandu-based cricketer Khadka first represented Nepal at the U-15 Level, where he played in the Under-15 Asia Cup in the United Arab Emirates in December 2002.

This was followed by his participation in Nepal Under-19 cricket in 2003 against India and the 2003 Youth Asia Cup in Karachi. However, Khadka, an all-rounder player, started his main cricketing career with a match against Malaysia in the 2004 ICC Intercontinental Cup in April 2004, which established him as a ‘player of finesse’ and his first senior match was classified as ‘first-class debut’.

Khadka also leads the departmental side Armed Police Force (APF) in domestic cricket.

    Paras Khadka’s Honors and Titles

Khadka has registered a series of remarkable achievements and unforgettable games in his cricket journey. Here are some of them:

    • In 2012, Khadka played for Nepal at the 2012 ACC Trophy Elite and secured a score of 291 runs with an average of 72.75 and took 9 opponent wickets. This was also the first time that the multi-talented cricketer registered a century in a match against Kuwait. Subsequently, he was named Player of the Tournament
    • For the second time, Khadka was named ‘Player of the Tournament’ in the 2013 ACC Twenty20 Cup where he secured a total of 207 runs with an average 41.40
    • In the 2014 ICC World Twenty20 tournament in Bangladesh, Khadka became the eighth player in the T20I history to a take wicket within the very first ball of his career
    • In 2018, Nepal Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli felicitated Paras Khadka along with other cricketers for their performances in the 2018 ICC World Cricket League Division-2 tournament
    • In July 2018, he was chosen the captain of Nepal’s squad for the One Day International (ODI) series against the Netherlands. This was Nepal’s first ODI matches since its achievement of ODI status during the 2018 Cricket World Cup Qualifier
    • Following this, Khadka was also named the captain of Nepal’s squad for the 2018 Asia Cup Qualifier tournament and Nepal’s squad in the Eastern sub-region group for the 2018–19 ICC World Twenty20 Asia Qualifier tournament in August and October 2018 respectively
    • In the wake of November 2018, the ICC featured four Nepali cricketers in its International Cricket Council (ICC) Men’s T20 rankings 2018. Khadka was among them and at the 94th
    • Earlier in May 2018, Paras Khadka was honored with the Player of the Year award during the Pulsar Sports Awards 2075, leaving behind his teammate Sandeep Lamichhane and several other sportsmen
    • In March 2018, the ICC named skipper Paras Khadka as one of the 11 brightest stars in the group stage matches of the ICC World Cup Qualifiers in Zimbabwe. Khadka was chosen among the Top 11 for his consistency in batting

Role in Ending Corruption in Nepal’s Cricket Administration

During his career as Nepal cricketer and team captain, Khadka was disappointed with the way the then Nepal cricketing body, Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) was functioning. In May 2010, he raised a boycott along with 18 member national cricket team and declared that they will not play the national league.

This was followed by another boycott in 2014 which stressed on restructuring CAN and provision of better facilities for the players. The two successive boycotts led to the dissolution of CAN and its implication into a controversy of financial mismanagement.

    On an EndNote

Fortunately, Nepali Cricket has seen some glorious days and will continue to do so under the able leadership of Paras Khadka! All The Best!
