In the letter, the incident of the recent shooting in Atlanta–where eight Asian origin people–was also mentioned.

Issuing a statement on Tuesday, the embassy said it took note of the recent case of assault on a Nepali Uber driver in San Francisco. It also thanked the American people and the law enforcement agencies for bringing the culprits to book.

The embassy condemned all kinds of violence and discrimination against any racial group, and expressed faith that justice will be delivered soon.

Meanwhile, the embassy also urged Nepalis living in the US to abide by the laws of the land and respect American culture.

The spate of attacks in recent weeks has mobilized several thousand people on the streets, protesting against racially motivated violence. New York saw the biggest such rally. Several rights groups also expressed their concern over increasing instances of hate crime.

Earlier, US President Joe Biden condemned the attacks on people of Asian origin in the country.

The bullfighting event will be seen in Nuwakot and Dhading districts, adjoining the Kathmandu valley, as the major highlight of the #MagheSankranti2020 celebrations in Nepal.

Hundreds of public are going to be seen in Taruka village of Nuwakot district to watch the joyful event.

The local sport has its origin in Taruka village and has been played since some 200 years ago in the 19th century.

    Bullfight in Nepal

Bullfight in Nepal is different from those in other parts of the world! #NepaliBullFight event includes both bulls and oxen, where they will be fighting continuously for nearly an hour period.

Ethnic appearances by the women of Tharu and Magar communities are going to be other highlights of the day.

‘Maghe Sankranti’ – The Auspicious Day

    Maghe Sankranti Celebration

Maghe Sankranti, which falls on the first day of the Nepali month of Magh as per the lunar calendar, marks the transition of Sun into the Hindu zodiac sign called Makara (Capricorn), putting an end to winter and welcoming the other seasons of the year followed by summer.

As per the tradition, Nepali Hindus visit various holy shrines and rivers to observe traditional pujas and Makar Snan (holy river bath) at the confluence of major rivers on this auspicious day.

    Maghe Sankranti Traditional Pujas

While the confluence of the holy Kali Gandaki and Trishuli rivers in Devghat hold great significance, devotees also take holy dips at various other rivers such as Dolalghat, Devghat, Ridi, Triveni and Baraha Kshetra, among others across the country.

A large number of people from Sunsari, Ilam, Morang, Saptari, Siraha, and Jhapa districts and a good number of people from various places of India gathered at Kankai River for Makar Snan, the tradition that is observed every year.

Marking the celebration as the start of New Year, Nepal’s Tharu community people will visit the Kathmandu Valley’s open ground Tundikhel (to commemorate Maghe Sankranti, the community’s biggest festival).

Meanwhile, the Newar Community also celebrates the festival as Ghyo Chaku Sanlhu with delicious dishes like ghee, chaku and remembering their beloved and departed souls.

As per the tradition, the elders apply a little amount of oil to the younger ones who then proceed for holy dip in sacred rivers. It is believed that sharing and eating ghee and chaku, vegetables and yam and sesame seed candy on the festival day adds to a healthy life.

Nepal Delicious Dishes of Maghe Sankranti

Another special delicious item, a mixture of black gram and rice with hot spices and ghee, called Khichadi is also served on this auspicious festival day. On the occasion, national leaders President Bidya Devi Bhandari and Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli extended their best wishes to the global Nepali community.

Meanwhile, another big religious fair was also celebrated in Devghat of Chitwan district with thousands of participants gathering at Devghat Dham for taking holy dip and observing the festival rituals.

Tharu community people also gathered at Tundikhel on a larger scale to mark the festival celebrations. Dressed in cultural attire, the community performed various cultural and religious dance shows at the event.

    A Special Attraction

    Maghe Sankranti Special Attraction

The traditional bullfight is one most famous animal sports event played as part of the Maghe Sankranti celebrations across Nepal and India. Commemorating the start of Magh and holy Sankranti festival, traditional bullfight sports event will be held across Nepal on January 15, 2020.

While Magh is also celebrated as the feast of molasses, Nepal’s mountainous district Nuwakot looks at it in a different way.

Marking the start of the Magh, the country observes the annual bullfighting event, a traditional animal sport that dates back to more than 225 years.

“This is the tradition which we (farmers) have continued for years. We have been herding the bulls and the government has been giving allowance to buy the tractors. However, we are not getting any sort of help or aid despite preserving the tradition for long,” says Bhoj Bahadur Bhandari, a participant of this traditional bull sport.

This annual bull-taming festival in Nepal is similar to that of the most-famous Jallikattu in Tamil Nadu of India and the Spanish Bullfight.

Apart from being a tradition, this unique bullfighting event is also adding to the promotion of Nepal tourism.

NepaliSansar team wishes all “Very Happy Maghe Sankranti”.

The Central Bank has set a 30 days deadline for implementing the new decision.

NRB issued a notice to the local banks and financial institutes, after complaints from the general public that majority of local ATMs don’t have Nepali language option.

It has passed a strict regulation that any financial institution failing to implement the instruction will be subjected to punishment under the Payment and Clearance Act, 2075 BS.

    Nepali Language in ATMs

According to NRB, around 4.71 million people use ATM services locally, and some 5.9 million people have ATM cards.

Cancer is a horrifying experience for anyone. But, it’s not at all an obstacle for those who fight it out with confidence.

An inspiring event held in Nepal on January 11, 2019, proved that! Kathmandu hosted the first-of-its-kind ramp walk show by cancer survivors, with the Nepal Cancer Support Group and its unit Sudipta organizing the event.

With ‘Cancer is also curable and there is life after Cancer,’ as the slogan, the event aimed at creating awareness and instill some positive spirit among cancer patients.

Amid hundreds of audience at the hall of Hotel Heritage Garden, various cancer survivors performed in the ramp walk titled ‘Sudipta Cancer Survivor Ramp Show’ with high confidence and charming smiles.

Unlike the usual fashion shows, an 8-year-old kid Lian Awale (a survivor of blood cancer) and a 21-year-old Dikshya Hada (undergoing the fourth phase of synovial sarcoma cancer) inaugurated the event amid huge applause.

    What Cancer Survivors Said?

Cancer survivors from different backgrounds and age groups participated in the show with traditional attires.

Cancer survivors walk on ramp in Nepal

“I won over breast cancer some eight years ago. Today, I am living a happy life with my family. We should not fear cancer, but fight against it,” said the 45-year-old Subina Chapagain from Kathmandu, who appeared in ethnic Sherpa attire.

“Many people think that cancer is not curable but it’s not true. If we conduct regular screening and receive treatment from the early stages, we can win over cancer. I am here to raise awareness about the same,” said another cancer survivor Pradeep Sapkota, who had overcome mouth-related cancer buccal mucosa.

    Sudipta Cancer Survivor Ramp Show

“It is a great pleasure to participate in a unique show surrounded by positive people. Though I am still struggling with cancer, the show has given me motivation and hope,” said Hada.

Hada, who hails from Bhaktapur, was accompanied by her 17-year-old brother Yash Hada.

The show filled with intense joy as Yash started playing the guitar for his sister and the duo received wide appreciation from the audience and many celebrities who attended the show.

“Seeing so many cancer-suffering people in a single platform, I realized that my daughter is not alone in this race,” says Hada’s mother.

“Cancer leads to physical, mental, financial and psychological struggles for the patients and their family members. But it is curable and post-cancer life can be still amazing as before,” says Sworupa Shrestha, the event coordinator.

At the end of the event, a few doctors also joined the show adding to the joy of the event.

    Extending Support to Cancer Affected

Dr. Sudip Shrestha and his wife have been running the Nepal Cancer Hospital and Research Center since the past few years, with their Nepal Cancer Support Group extending needed support to the needy cancer patients and their families. Continuing the efforts, the organizers are planning to utilize the ramp show fund for the treatment of cancer patients with poor family background.

Sworupa Shrestha and Sudip Shrestha at Ramp Walk

“Regular health check-up and a healthy lifestyle is the key to prevent cancer. There are hospitals with advanced technologies within the country, so people should not fear anymore,” says Shrestha.

According to the Nepal Health Research Council, trends show Nepal has around 30,000 cases of cancer diagnosed every year and only around 10,000 patients of them visit the doctors for necessary treatment.

Cancers related to lungs, oral cavity, breast, thyroid, breast, and cervix have been among the popular cancers seen in Nepal over the years. While breast cancer is more among women, men are falling prey to lung cancer.

    In Conclusion

Events of this kind not only give new hope to cancer survivors but also bring to limelight many cancer patients waiting for needed support!

Passion can drive you to any level, to any extent. Nepal’s 17-year-old Bandana Nepal proved this by setting a new Guinness World Record!

Dancing continuously for surprising 126 hours, Bandana made a new Guinness World Record in the ‘Longest Dancing Marathon by an Individual’ category.

Bandana, who began her solo dance performance on November 23, 2018 continued doing so till November 28, 2018 afternoon with a strong determination to set the record, say the event management officials.

Bandana did this stunning performance in Nepali music in the hall of Big Foodland restaurant in Kathmandu, amid the presence of her family members, general public and media.

With this performance, Bandana smashed the existing longest-hour dance record of the Indian dancer Kalamandalam Hemalatha, who danced continuously for 123 hours and 15 minutes in 2011.

The most laudable part of Bandana’s stage show was her smile that remained the same throughout the performance, despite restlessness, lack of diet and physical strain.

“I am very glad to see my daughter being able to keep the world record. This achievement is not just of hers, but she has also set the nation’s name at the global front. It’s a moment of pride for all of us,” said Ram Nepal, Bandana’s father.

Ram went on to say that his daughter’s performance should inspire many other Nepali citizens, especially girls and women, to dream big in life.

This on-stage performance of Bandana was the result of her rehearsals for more than 100 hours before the program day.

As the event coordinators say, Bandana danced only in Nepali songs with an aim to promote Nepali culture, globally.

The event management team has already begun submitting their process of submitting Bandana’s dance evidences to the Guinness World Records for final certificate, which is most likely expected in a month’s time.

    About Bandana in Brief
Bandana hails from Dhankuta in the eastern district of Nepal.

Beginning with her dancing passion at the age of five, Bandana went on further to get trained both in Nepal and India. However, her first practice began with her brother, say Bandana’s family members.

“In our generation, it was difficult for women to even dance or smile publicly, but now time has changed. I feel so proud of my granddaughter that she has been able to keep her name globally,” says Bandana’s 63-year-old grandmother elated at Bandana’s performance.

Bandana is currently pursuing Business Management course in Grade-12 in Kathmandu.

Nepal is one among the world nations with majority youth population!

Given this fact, the country has always been open for wide range of opportunities, investment and proposals from foreign nations. All is to ensure better livelihood and career opportunities for its young citizens!

This wish of the Himalayan Nation is growing in size with the reported rise in number of its youngsters leaving the country for career opportunities abroad.

    See:

Now, local development and generating employment locally remain to be two key agendas of the Nepal Government to provide an alternative to the rising number of migrants leaving for foreign destinations.

Towards this end, the government has already announced plans for local skill development and employment laws in a move to ensure more opportunities for Nepali citizens, especially youth.

Besides, Nepal as a fast-developing country, also presents scope for enormous employment opportunities across its various sectors including government and private sectors undergoing fast-paced development.

Some of the key high-potential public sector areas offering larger scope for youth employment and career opportunities in Nepal, through their ongoing development, in the current scenario include:

    • Hydropower
    • Transport Infrastructure
    • Civil Infrastructure
    • Agriculture
    • Industrial Sector
    • Logistics & Services
    • Public Policy
    • Digital Governance
    • Local-level groups such as District Health Groups, Community Welfare Centers, etc.,
    • Think-tanks and various other local, provincial and central government departments

Aforementioned are some areas undergoing fast-paced development with both government and private sector participation.

Coming to other side of the Nepali society, there are also fast-paced private career opportunities stemming up across the country. Some of the encouraging trends showcasing high employment scope for Nepali youth in other areas, other than public sector, include:

As the reports say, there is a high rate of demand for government jobs among youth from provinces. According to the Public Service Commission (PSC), job applicants to the department has increased almost six-fold in a decade period. The Department’s 59th Annual Report puts Province 2 on the top of other provinces for such jobs.

Besides aforementioned opportunities that come as official notifications or via mouth talk, there might also be some good opportunities that can go unnoticed. As a solution to this, a good number of job portals in Nepal are operating on a regular basis looking every nook and corner of the country to keep the citizens informed about every new job opportunity along with offering them career counselling solutions.

Here are some of the top job portal and career counselling portals:

    • Merojob
    • Jobs Nepal
    • RamroJob
    • Kantipur Job
    • Mero Rojgari
    • Kumari Jobs

    What World Bank Says?
In its report titled ‘Jobless Growth?’, the World Bank reports that Nepal needs to create more jobs to meet the employment needs of the gradually-growing working age population. “Every month, the working age population increases by 35,000 people and Nepal must create 286,900 jobs a year to maintain its employment rate,” reads WB report.

“Providing opportunities to these young entrants while attracting more women into the labor market will require generating even more jobs for every point of economic growth,” says Martin Rama, World Bank South Asia Region Chief Economist.

    Government Efforts Underway!
Nepal Government has been making its efforts to address the situation in multiple ways.

Event the Budget FY 2018-19 has also dwelled more on creating sufficient job opportunities locally. Skill development is one step in the process that the Ministry of Labor has already announced as a measure to retain more local talents from going abroad to most-sought destinations such as Malaysia, Singapore, UAE, Australia, etc.

It’s alarming that around 512,000 youth leave the local market for foreign job opportunities, annually!

According to International Labor Organization, 63.7 percent of Nepal’s overall population are aged below 30 years and 19.2 percent of the youth in the age group of 15-29 years are facing unemployment.

Hope the ongoing developing and upcoming projects would provide needed scope for Nepali youth to earn their livelihood, locally, thus contributing to the homeland development.

Nepal’s most-awaited music festival, Jazzmandu, is gearing up for its 2018 edition in Kathmandu.

Jazzmandu 2018 is going to mark the annual music festival’s 22 years of successful journey since its first edition in 2002.

The festival, usually celebrated in the Biggest Festival Season of Nepal, is coming again to woo Nepali audience amidst Dashain and Tihar celebrations for the year 2018.

    Jazzmandu 2018 Highlights

Nepali art and music lovers are eagerly waiting for the arrival of this famous Nepali music festival scheduled to be held during November 1-6, 2018.

Jazzmandu is usually a mix of local and international talents.

This year, Jazzmandu is welcoming six international bands to perform in the festival in various venues across Kathmandu during the scheduled period.

These foreign music bands include DACH, Nick’s Cousins, Groove Gang, Adrien Brandeis Quintet, Eduardo Mendonca and Cynthia Abraham.

Besides, there will also be Nepali bands including Cadenza (the festival organizer), Abhishek & Maria (who teach and perform jazz in Nepal), Project Sarangi that aims to safeguard and revive traditional Nepali music and Rabin Lal Shrestha duo with a melodious Eastern Classical.

    The Voice of Jazzmandu

Nepalis are fond of jazz because of its interactive approach in bringing the jazz-style music closer to Nepalis.

Jazzmandu presents different elements of music from traditional and non-traditional background including folk and instruments to melodies.

It stands out unique among other music festivals, majorly because it infuses new trends and styles in music into the local jazz scene, in its 2018 rendition.

“Jazz is popular because it revels in improvisation, it sounds different in each place. In jazz, there are no rules and there is much improvisation. It is more like a conversation,” says Samir Chhetri, one of the festival organizers and member of Nepal’s first jazz band, The Cadenza.

The journey of jazz music in Nepal has been successful as evident in its track record from having a handful of jazz musicians 16 years ago to today’s continuously-growing number of youngsters queuing to learn jazz at the Kathmandu Jazz Conservatory.

    Long Live Jazz in Nepal!

Bad weather is always a serious concern for Nepal owing to its proneness to natural disaster.

Uneven weather conditions have been torturing the country since few days triggering shock alerts all across for locals and pilgrims.

Let’s look at some of them:

    Mansarovar Yatra
Bad weather conditions have stopped around 200 Indian pilgrims in Simikot and Humla on their Mansarovar Yatra, as the commercial flight operations remained stalled due to unsupportive weather.

This incident is coming after a similar situation in the last month that saw around 1500 Indian tourists struck at various places on their journey to Kailash Mansarovar Yatra and return.

Simikot and Humla are available only through air connectivity, and no other way is a major concern for pilgrims.

    Flooding Rivers
This is one perennial problem that Nepalis have been facing over the years. Very recently, Bagmati and Lal Bakaiya Rivers have reportedly eroded their embarkments and started affecting the public and transport movement across different places of Rautahat and Sarlahi.

The floods have reportedly washed away Ropanis of land across different places of the municipalities such as Maryadapur, Tejapakad, Badarhawa Rautahat and Hajariya.

Raj Kumar Sriwstab Chief of Water Induced Disaster and River Control“Teams of technicians have been deployed to control erosion. However, locals are facing a shortage of required materials to control the flood,” says Chief of Water Induced Disaster and River Control Division Office, Rautahat, Raj Kumar Sriwstab.

    Health, A Serious Concern
Adding to the existing concerns, floods in Bhaktapur have given rise to an outbreak of Hepatitis-E in Bhaktapur.  Overflowing of the Hanumante River as a result of incessant rains resulted in floods contaminating drinking water in the area.

Speaking about the situation, Coordinator of Clinical Research Unit at Sukraraj Tropical and Infectious Disease Hospital Dr. Sher Bahadur Pun said some of the locals were reportedly found to be Hepatitis E positive.

“One person with Hepatitis E is enough to cause an outbreak. Usually, it doesn’t lead to long-term illness or liver damage like some other forms of hepatitis do. But Hepatitis E can be dangerous for pregnant women or anyone with the weak immune system, including the elderly or people who are ill,” adds Pun.

    List not exhaustive!
Hope the governmental measures and active participation of related stakeholders will address the existing issues, creating a way for dealing with perennial problems.
