The Himalayan country is likely to host the 13th edition of the South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) Championship to be held in October 2021.

The All Nepal Football Association (ANFA) has received a formal offer from the Federation to host the Championship in Nepal.

According to the ANFA, the SAFF General Secretary Anwarul Huq officially wrote a proposal letter to the ANFA General Secretary Indraman Tuladhar to host the Championship in Nepal.

The ANFA will now draft a detailed proposal of the Championship and send it to SAFF for approval.

    ANFA and SAFF

The SAFF President and Executive Committee will review the proposal from ANFA before conforming the host.

The SAFF has sent the offer to Nepal after Bangladesh Football Federation exited as host due to the threat of coronavirus pandemic in the country. A virtual meeting of the member countries held on July 23 decided this effect.

So far, Nepal has hosted the biennial football Championship two times, first in 1997 and second in 2013. However, the Himalayan nation has never reached the Championship finals. In 2013, Nepal lost to Afghanistan in the semi-finals.

India stands atop in the Championship. The neighboring country has lifted the Championship title seven times.

Nepal has been closely watching the India’s Twenty 20 cricket this season.

What made Nepal to do so? And, the answer is Sandeep Lamichhane, the country’s young spinning sensation!

Sandeep, who was in India for IPL 2019, has returned home on May 12, 2019, after playing a total of six matches of #IPL2019.

“I could learn a lot this time even if I played six matches,” said Sandeep upon his arrival at the Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA). He further added that this #IPLSeason was little tough compared to the previous one, and expressed happiness in saying that his participation added to Nepal’s stature in the world T20 cricket.

Responding on further matches, Sandeep clarified that he is not playing the Prime Minister Cricket that is scheduled to begin next week.

In six matches in IPL 2019, Sandeep took a total of 8 wickets, thus winning some special recognition!

    Sandeep Says

“I’m very thankful to Nepal cricket, because I’ve done really good for Nepal cricket in the past year and that’s why people from Delhi Capitals, they [picked] me last year….From there [it] completely changed my life because I got to play three games, did really good for Delhi Daredevils [as Delhi were known last year]. After that, I’ve not had to look back at my journey. Last time I played three games, but this time I’ve to play a lot of games. That’s where I can improve myself, so that if this time I’m getting seven to eight games, I would like to make sure, next time, I will play all the 14 games.”

    ICC Commends Sandeep

Citing Sandeep’s statement “IPL has changed my life”, ICC said, “His growing international stature is evident by the fact that he’s a regular in the Delhi Capitals line-up this season, having played just three games last year. He is also repaying the faith with match-winning performances.”

“The players know their role, which is a good thing heading into a crucial tournament. We are feeling good collectively with our performances in the recent practice tour. There are few experienced players in the squad which certainly makes my job easier in the middle. We can always talk to each other in difficult situations,” Poudel said in a statement.

    Newcomers Add Freshness

Welcoming the newcomers, he stated, “The newcomers are always refreshing. They bring new ideas in the team. Pratish has done well swinging the new ball and also bowling well in death overs.”

Hari Bahadur Chauhan was elated on his first-ever selection for the national team.

“This will be my first time as a wicket-keeper batsman. The team required a back-up keeper for the tour and the coach trusted me to do justice with the role. He had seen me wicket-keeping for Dhangadhi Stars during DPL. He also had given me few matches with gloves during the practice tour of India,” Chauhan said in a statement.
