Prabal Gurung – World’s Renowned Nepali Women Wear Designer

Prabal Gurung is an American fashion designer of Nepalese descent based in New York City. Gurung was born in Singapore to Nepali parents and then raised in Kathmandu, Nepal. He studied fashion in India and New York.

In 1999, Gurung moved to New York City and attended Parsons School of Design. After Parsons, Gurung worked with Cynthia Rowley’s design team for two years. There he became the design director at Bill Blass.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter he revealed that he left his design director position at Bill Blass in 2004. He then took risk and showed his own collection, PRABAL GURUNG in February 2009 at the FLAG Art Foundation in Chelsea. The collection was economically produced with the help of modeling agencies and hair and makeup people working for no compensation.

 

In the final hour of Gurung’s debut show, Bridget Foley of WWD and Cathy Horyn showed interest in his collection. Two days later, his red dress with a Valentine bow on the shoulder was featured on the cover of WWD. This changed everything for him and he started getting recognition.

Today, Prabal Gurung is one of the biggest women wear designer in the world in and has achieved a celebrity status. Gurung has become the industry’s go-to-designer for the likes of some of the most popular celebrities like Oprah Winfrey, Michelle Obama, Marion Cotillard, Catherine, The Duchess of Cambridge (Kate Middleton), Lady Gaga, Demi Moore, Emma Watson, Anne Hathaway, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kate Hudson, Scarlett Johansson, Selena Gomez, Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone, Katrina Kaif, Alia Bhatt, Kajol and Priyanka Chopra.
