With the closure of educational institutes due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Nepal has been working to adopt e-learning via different electronic devices like radio, television, cell phones, and many more.
However, the lack of student access to technology at home has emerged as a roadblock for student learning.
According to Provincial Education Directorate Director Chandra Prasad Luintel, only 30% of students in the Bagmati Province have access to the internet. Only 12 out of 600 school students have cell phones.
Though 75% of the population has access to the internet, 85% to the radio and 72% to television, access of students to such devices is nominal.
“Poor internet connectivity and students’ lack of access to phones have created difficulties to run the classes,” said Luintel.
He added that different policies should be adopted to continue teaching-learning activities for students having access to the internet as well as those not having internet access.
To give continuity to learning activities through alternative systems, the Education Ministry has directed the schools to implement the ‘Student Learning Facilitation Guideline, 2020 through Alternative System’ from August 15.
Even the Curriculum Development Centre has started working to grant recognition to alternative learning methods for the current academic session. However, learning through alternative systems seems to be impractical during the ongoing crisis.
