Harry Bhandari, First Nepali American Ascends House of Delegates

In a historic day for Nepal, Harry Bhandari becomes the first Nepali American to be directly elected to the Lower House of the United States!

Bhandari emerged member of the House of Delegates on November 06, 2018 from District 8 of Maryland state.

The 41-year Nepali American secured second position among 141 persons of 47 Maryland state districts elected to the House of Delegates.

“This victory is not only of mine rather that of entire Nepali community,” said Bhandari.

Bhandari said he wants to address vacant homes, improve school facilities, while contesting for US midterm elections empower people including migrants to become a part of the government and lower drug prices.

Bhandari who is a teacher by profession visited 15,000 houses as part of his election campaign.

He proudly says, ‘He has lived the American Dream’. “I’m so very humbled for the tremendous opportunity I got from this country and community, and I want to pay that debt,” he said.

Originally, an educator at Nepal, Bhandari moved to America when he was a young boy of 25 years. Fast-forward to today, he is a city school teacher and resident of Nottingham.

He proudly says, ‘He has lived the American Dream’. “I’m so very humbled for the tremendous opportunity I got from this country and community, and I want to pay that debt,” he said.

This is Bhandari’ second attempt at winning a seat in the House, earlier he had run the elections in 2014.

The Democratic Party had 42,000 registered voters out of the total 135,000 voters in the District 8, earlier in the interparty elections. Harry said that six percent of the total voters in the constituency are Asian voters.
