Apart from causing loss of human life, the floods have caused severe damage to infrastructure and property.

According to the Independent Power Producers’ Association, Nepal (IPPAN), the monsoon-induced hazards have wrecked many hydropower projects, causing around NPR 10 billion loss.

The financial loss was attributed to the damage caused to the powerhouses, dams, transmission line poles, and connecting roads.

The Super Madi Hydropower Project is the most affected infrastructure, informed IPPAN President Krishna Prasad Acharya.

The IPPAN has urged the Nepali Government to draft a high-level mechanism, comprising officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs, Finance, and Energy, to calculate actual damages to the hydropower projects.

The Association has also requested Nepal Electricity Authority to act swiftly to safeguard its substations and prevent possible disruption in electric supply.

Less experienced than these five but also capable of making quick runs are Tonny Staal (HCC) and Bas de Leede (Voorburg), both of whom will be keen to take their claim to a regular place in the side, and the same applies to teenage left-hander Vikram Singh (VRA Amsterdam), who has just a single cap so far but who will doubtless add more during this tournament.

visiting sides, as will the passionate support they can expect for the Nepalese. With Malaysia sitting a division below the hosts in the ICC hierarchy and the Dutch fielding what is mostly a second string side, Nepal may well start as favorites.

But Campbell and Bilal Asad, his Malaysian counterpart, will be looking to their players literally to rise to the occasion and to demonstrate how effectively they can adapt on the international stage.

The Sri Lanka-born Australian cricketer Whatmore’s appointment will bring a great experience to Nepal at a time when the team is reeling from the failure to secure a berth at the 2021 T20 World Cup in India. The coach’s primary task will be to secure Nepal’s qualification for the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia.

His appointment will also fill the position that had remained vacant for nearly a year after Indian Coach Umesh Patwal stepped down in February 2020.

“Dave is extremely keen to take on this new challenge, as he strongly believes Nepal has great talent and a very bright future in cricket. Nepal is a beautiful country, and Dav is looking forward to this new challenge with a bunch of young talent of Nepal,” said Dav’s high profile manager Kaustav Lahiri after the appointment.

In the past, Whatmore steered Sri Lanka to a World Cup Trophy in 1996. He then nourished the Bangladesh team from 2003-07, guiding them through the Super Eights of the 2007 World Cup, where they outperformed India and South Africa.

Dav also coached the Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League between 2009 and 2012.

In 2017, Dav conducted a two-week high-performance training camp from January 25 to February 7 for Nepali national players. He also conducted a two-day coaching session for Nepal cricket coaches.

The CAN has also appointed Ramesh Kumar Neupane as the Chief Finance Officer, Raunaq Bahadur Malla as the General Manager, and Binod Kumar Das as Cricket Manager with effect from January 1, 2021.

The study titled “Status of Menstrual Health and Hygiene Management among Adolescents Girls in Nepal” concludes that along with having inadequate knowledge around menstruation, adolescent girls continue to face restrictions during periods ranging from restrictions in religious activities, issues of touchability to food consumption.

Surveyed in 3,675 adolescent girls (aged 10-19 years) across the country including differently-abled girls who had experienced their menarche, the study highlighted mothers as the primary source of information who guides menstrual management as well as major bearers to continue restrictions during menstruation at home.

The NHRC and World Vision’s report also concluded that Chaupadi continues to be practiced in three of seven provinces with Sudurpaschim practicing most. “Staying and sleeping alone in a livestock shed at night is fearful and frightening. Family members can’t even find if anything happens to us when we menstruate and it is a major problem,” an adolescent girl of Achham, Sudurpaschim Province said.

Results of the report also reveal that the menstrual needs of differently-abled adolescent girls are largely neglected. Their needs are related to the availability of menstrual material and disable friendly WASH beyond home.

Ms. Abhilasha Gurung, Health and Nutrition Portfolio Advisor of World Vision International Nepal said, “As menstrual taboos, inadequate knowledge and poor menstrual health and hygiene management can have direct negative impacts on psychosocial/mental health, which in turn leads to further negative health outcomes among girls and women, World Vision calls on the Government of Nepal for making deliberate efforts with provincial and local government for formulation of plans, policies and strategies to overcome the gaps in menstrual health and hygiene management directed towards the target group.”

The report also offers recommendations for the government to promote sustainable, low cost, affordable and eco-friendly sanitary materials and their distribution to adolescent girls throughout the country and intensify monitoring and supervision of MHM related government programs, for example – free pad distribution initiative.

It also urges the government to allocate a budget to establish girl-friendly (Chhatra Maitri) schools and take empowerment and engendered approach to capacitate adolescent girls, making them self-concerned and confident to speak up for their own menstrual health needs with everyone at school including male students and teachers.

According to the calculations from the last two weeks, nearly 5,900 people have lost their lives every 24 hours on an average. This equates to 247 deaths per hour, or one death every 15 seconds.

As of today, the coronavirus pandemic has infected 18,999,962 people globally. Currently, there are 6,101,269 active cases and 12,187,071 recovery cases.

COVID-19 in Nepal

Nepal continues to witness a rise in coronavirus infections since the Nepali Government lifted the nationwide lockdown.

In the last 24 hours, Nepal has reported 381 COVID-19 positive cases, taking the nation’s caseload to 21,390.

Five persons have died of coronavirus on Wednesday, taking the total death toll to 60. The deaths are as follows

• 65-year-old female from Malangawa of Sarlahi district
• 46-year-old male from Birgunj-15 Biswa
• 18-year-old female from Pokhariya-9
• 45-year-old male from Rangeli
• A male from Morang

Meanwhile, around 130 patients were discharged across the country, taking the total COVID-19 recoveries to 15,156.

Currently, there are 6,174 active cases, among which 46 patients are undergoing treatment at ICU and four are on a ventilator.

Kathmandu Valley Reports Over 100 COVID-19 Cases

On August 8, as many as 102 new coronavirus cases were reported in the Kathmandu Valley, the highest single-day spike in infections in the Valley. Earlier on August 7, Valley reported 62 positive cases.

According to the local authorities, most of the infected patients are from Province 2 and Indian returnees.

So far, Kathmandu Valley has reported over 900 cases.

Govt. Imposes Odd-even Rule

With the surge in coronavirus cases in the country, the Nepali Government has decided to impose an odd-even rule in places, including Kathmandu Valley, with over 200 cases starting today.

Moreover, the government has also banned the entry into Kathmandu Valley from 7 pm to 7 am starting today. However, the restrictions do not apply to essential goods vehicles.

Prohibitory Orders in 15 Districts

According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, the local governments have enforced prohibitory orders in as many as 15 districts across the country.

All services, businesses, and marketplaces will be closed during this period. The locations under prohibitory orders are as follows

On May 18, the Nepali Government has endorsed a new political map that includes Kalapani, Lipulekh and Limpiyadhura territories currently controlled by India.

According to Spokesperson Dr. Yuba Raj Khatiwada, the new map will be updated in the constitution’s schedule, coat of arms, school curriculum, and government offices.

The New Nepal Map features

• 335 sq. km of Limpiyadhura
• Gunji, Nabhi and Kuti villages
• 60 sq. km of Kalapani

The aggressive move came on heels of the statement made by the Indian Army Chief General MM Naravane, accusing Nepal of raising the Lipulekh issue.

The Nepali Government was reeling under pressure to issue a new map featuring territories encroached by India after the southern neighbor released its new map.

Earlier, the Indian Government has released its new political map featuring Nepali territory of Kalapani inside its borders after creating Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh as its union territories.

In response, the State Affairs and Good Governance Committee issued a written directive to the Nepali Government on November 11, 2019 to issue a new map including the encroached territory.

Similarly, in the month of Baishakh, the committee had directed the Nepali Government to publicize the new map claiming that the Limpiyadhura region is the source of the Mahakali River.

The Department of Survey had prepared the new map including encroached territories as mentioned in the Sugauli Treaty of 1816.

“The patient is under surveillance and her health condition is said to be normal at present,” said Dr Bikash Devkota, Ministry of Health and Population Spokesperson.

“Her throat swab was brought to National Public Health Laboratory for test. The test result, which came out on March 28, 2020, showed she was COVID-19 positive,” added Dr Devkota.

The Belgium returnee had boarded the same flight from Qatar with the 19-year-old Nepali student from France who had earlier tested positive for COVID-19.

Both had arrived to Nepal through a Qatar Airways’ QR 652 flight on March 17.

All the five coronavirus cases in Nepal are imported. Four patients are currently undergoing treatment while one has already recovered and discharged.

So far, the Nepali Government tested a total of 875 coronavirus suspects, out of which 870 tested negative while 5 have come out positive for the contagion.

Nepalis in Abroad

According to the Nepali Embassy in Canberra, eight Nepali students in Australia have tested positive for the deadly coronavirus.

• 4 Nepalis in New South Wales
• 3 Nepalis in Victoria
• 1 Nepali in Tasmania

However, the Nepali from Tasmania has already recovered and discharged.

So far, the coronavirus has spread to 199 countries and territories around the world and infected 722,350 people while claiming 33,980 lives.

The USA became the new coronavirus hotspot with 142,178 infection cases and 2,484 death cases.

Meanwhile, the coronavirus has inflicted a perilous impact on Italy by claiming 10,779 lives, the highest number of coronavirus deaths in the world. Italy has reported 97,689 COVID-19 infection cases so far.

However, China has almost recovered from the coronavirus outbreak. Surprisingly, the country has reported only 31 new COVID-19 infection cases in the last 24 hours.

Prime Ministers of Nepal, India, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Bhutan, Maldives and Sri Lanka and a representative of the Pakistani PM participated in the first ever video conference on March 15, 2020.

All the leaders agreed to establish a joint response mechanism to stave off Coronavirus (COVID-19) threat in the region. They also agreed to evaluate the long-term implications of the coronavirus on the regional economy and find the best strategies for early recovery.

Initiating the conference from New Delhi, Indian PM Narendra Modi proposed a rapid response team of doctors and specialists, surveillance software, online training and common research mechanism at the disposal of the SAARC to combat the COVID-19.

He also proposed to establish a ‘COVID-19 Emergency Fund’ and agreed to provide USD 10 million as initial contribution. He, then, requested the other leaders to voluntarily contribute to the fund.

Other countries including Nepal approved the ‘Emergency Fund’ proposal initiated by India and agreed to contribute to the fund.

Meanwhile, Nepal PM KP Sharma Oli proposed to establish a SAARC emergency medical facility to deal with the identical health challenges in the region.

He shared the strategies and policies initiated by the Nepali Government to impede the coronavirus spread in the country.

“Even though we had detected one suspected case, the COVID-19 test proved negative. Yet, we are aware of the high risk of possible outbreak at any time. We remain alert to prevent it,” said PM Oli.

Likewise, all the other leaders expressed their opinions on the coronavirus outbreak.

This was for the first time the top South Asian leaders have participated in the SAARC summit since 2014 when the last summit took place in Nepal.
