Nepal is in active talks with the United States of America to procure 3 to 5 million units of AstraZeneca vaccine, said Nepal’s Ambassador to the US, Dr. Yuba Raj Khatiwada.
The announcement from Dr. Khatiwada comes at a time when the government is facing severe criticism for failing to bring COVID-19 vaccines through diplomatic channels.
The ambassador, who reached Dallas, Texas lately, urged the Nepali community leaders in America to persuade the US political establishments to provide vaccines to Nepal. He requested everyone to strive from their level to escalate to the US Government regarding the severe impact of the second wave in Nepal.
Informing that the Non-Resident Nepalis (NRN) Bill is in the process of enactment, Dr. Khatiwada said that the US Government had done a lot in favor of NRNs.
He also mentioned that the Nepali Government is working on setting up consulates in various US cities where the density of Nepalis is high.
As the second wave continues to deepen its grip in the country, the Nepali Government is fumbling to procure vaccines and essential life-saving commodities, including oxygen, critical care medicines, testing kits, and PPEs. And Dr. Khatiwada’s statement brings a new ray of hope.
