Boudhanath, Asia’s largest stupa and one of the largest in the world, is a historical and famous Buddhist tourist destination near Kathmandu, attracting thousands of visitors every day.

Considered to be the holiest Tibetan monument, Boudhanath was built during the reign of King Manadeva in the 5th century AD and has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Boudhanath or Jharung Khashor symbolizes the high knowledge treasure of the Buddhas and is believed to fulfill the wishes of devotees who prostrate and circumambulate it with a pure heart.

    A Symbol of Tibetan Culture

Boudhanath reflects the rich Tibetan culture as evident in its holy appearance.

A square tower with the eyes of the omnipresent Buddha painted on all four sides stands atop Boudhanath.

Prayer flags in five colors with mantras and prayers, representing the five elements or Five Pure Lights of Tibetan Buddhism namely space, air, water, fire and earth, are tied all around this great stupa called ‘Chorten Chenpo’ in Tibetan.

Over 50 Tibetan Gompas or monasteries and nunneries are located close to the monument including the Shechen Monastery, Khawalung Monastery, Kopan Monastery, Khachoe Ghakyil Ling Nunnery and Pullahari Monastery & Retreat Center, the seat of His Eminence Jamgon Kongtrul Rinpoche of Tibet in Nepal.

    Association with Padmapani

While the nine levels of the Boudhanath stupa symbolize Mount Meru, considered the center of the cosmos, the 13 rings from the base to the pinnacle of the monument represent “Bodhi” or the path to enlightenment, from which the name Boudhanath has been derived.

The 108 forms of the bodhisattva of compassion, Avalokiteshvara or Padmapani, are depicted in exquisite sculptures around the base of the stupa, while the mantra “Om Mani Padme Hum” is inscribed on the prayer wheels beside his image.

    Tourist Attractions

Nearby Boudhanath are several handicraft stores selling Tibetan souvenirs, statues, prayer flags, ceremonial horns, Tibetan drums, singing bowls, thankas and other items of tourist interest.

Feeding of birds is organized here early in the morning each day for the visitors to participate in as an act of giving and compassion.

The Taragaon Museum on Boudha Road and the Bodhisattva Gallery promoting and selling Newari art statues and Paubha paintings are among popular among tourists to Boudhanath.

    Pashupatinath Temple

The famous Pashupatinath temple is within a 30-minute walking distance of Boudhanath. Regular bus services to the ancient temple of Changu Narayan are also available from here.

    Reaching Boudhanath

Boudhanath is situated at a distance of seven miles from the center of Kathmandu and is easily accessible by taxis and buses.

The Boudhanath stupa that was severely damaged in the 2015 earthquake has been renovated at a cost of Rs 230 million and reopened to the public in November 2016.

One of the few places across the world where unfettered Tibetan Buddhist culture is on view, Boudhanath presents a fascinating and enriching spiritual experience to all tourists visiting Nepal.

Swayambhunath Stupa is one of the most ancient and holy shrines in the Kathmandu valley and has been an important Buddhist pilgrimage destination since 5th century AD.

    Origin of Swayambhunath

According to the 15th century Swayambhu purana, Lord Buddha planted a miraculous lotus that radiated a brilliant light and blossomed in the lake that once covered the Kathmandu Valley. This lotus later transformed into a sacred hill on its own and the place came to be known as Swayambhu, meaning ‘Self-Created’ or ‘Self-Existent’.

Swayambhunath is regularly visited by thousands of pilgrims including Vajrayana Buddhists of northern Nepal and Tibet, Newari Buddhists of central and southern Nepal, and even people of other faiths.

    The ‘Monkey Temple’

A designated UNESCO World Heritage Site, Swayambhunath is also fondly known as the ‘Monkey Temple’ on account of hundreds of monkeys that abound the hill.

At short distances from Swayambhunath are other historical temples such as the Shiva Jyotirlinga temple of Pashupatinath, Boudhanath Stupa, Changu Narayan, Dakshinkali and Budhanilkantha.

    Golden Vajra at Swayambhunath Temple

Swayambhunath houses the famous six meter high image of Shakyamuni, the oldest persona of Lord Buddha. Evening prayers are held every day around this statue along with the chanting of Sanskrit sutras.

    Celebration of Festivals

The two main festivals celebrated at Swayambhunath are Buddha Jayanti and Losar. During these occasions, many pilgrims circumambulate the temple while the monks create a lotus pattern on the stupa with saffron-colored paint. The month-long Gunla celebration marking the end of the rainy season is another important event in Swayambhunath.

    A Fascinating Experience

Swayambhunath is a mosaic of small stupas, pagoda temples and monasteries, and presents a magnificent view of the Kathmandu valley. Centuries-old statues, thousands of butter lamps, carved icons and the fragrance of incense sticks create a magical atmosphere at this ancient religious shrine.

Some of the prominent monuments in Swayambhunath include the Buddha statue on the western side, the huge gold-plated Vajra ‘thunderbolt’ in the east, statue of the sleeping Buddha, the Dewa Dharma monastery, noted for a bronze icon of Buddha and traditional Tibetan paintings, and the temple dedicated to Harati, the goddess of children.

Swayambhunath is perhaps the best place to observe religious harmony in entire  Nepal  and must not be missed on a trip to Kathmandu.

In a move promoting Nepal tourism, the Nepal Association of Tour and Travel Agents (NATTA) in partnership with the Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) and Nepal Airlines Corporation (NAC) is organizing a special tourism promotion program.

As part of the move, NATTA is conducting a week-long Nepal Sales Mission to Colombo (Sri Lanka) and Bangalore (India) from December 14-21, 2017.

“Like past years, we are organizing tourism promotional events in the international market this year as well. As India and Sri Lanka are the first and fourth largest tourist generating market for Nepal, respectively, we are hopeful that visitors from these countries will increase further after this event,” says Ram Barakoti, Program Coordinator of Nepal Sales Mission.

As part of the tour, Nepali tourism entrepreneurs will be engaged in day-long B2B sessions at both the cities, informed Barakoti.

Stating that Sri Lankan tourists to Nepal come for Lumbini, the birthplace of the Buddha, Barakoti raised concern that they are opting India for Buddhism pilgrimage. “We will encourage them to start the pilgrimage from Kathmandu,” he added.

In this program, tourism service providers and tour operators will also promote Nepal’s tourism attractions among Sri Lankan tour operators.

“As NAC is operating direct flights to Bangalore, we are hopeful that the number of tourists coming from Bangalore will increase as participating delegates will promote Nepal’s tourism attractions among local tour operators,” Barakoti noted.

NATTA is keen on promoting Nepal among Sri Lankan and Indian tourists as a key destination for historical, religious and natural attractions, added Barakoti.
