FIFA Soccer World Cup is likely to become biennial.

Earlier in May, FIFA waved green flag to conduct study into the feasibility of hosting soccer World Cup every two years, the move that could have a profound impact on the global football structure.

The proposal, put forth by the Saudi Arabian Football Association, was endorsed by 166 votes to 22, during a virtual FIFA congress in May.

Lately, four Asian nations, including Nepal, Maldives, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh, have extended their support for the biennial proposal.

The four counties issued a joint statement stating their support to Gianni Infantino’s pet project, becoming the first member associations from the Asian Football Confederation (AFC).

    FIFA

We “are uniting in support of proposals to review the FIFA international match calendar as we jointly believe that the debate can only be positive for football’s modernization,” said the four associations in the joint statement.

“Four-year gap between FIFA World Cups is too great – and the window of opportunity too small – to preclude whole generations of talent,” read the joint statement.

“Less than a quarter of current AFC member associations have been represented in almost a century of FIFA World Cup finals in a situation where these tournaments are real drives of development.”

Nepal football fraternity got heated up following the announcement of resignation by the national football team head coach Abdullah Almutairi.

Taking to his Facebook account, the Qatari coach announced his resignation and openly blamed senior vice-president of All Nepal Football Association (ANFA) Pankaj Nembang for his sudden decision to resign.

“Dear Nepali Fans … I’m going to ANFA to resign, and I’m resigning because of the senior vice president of ANFA, in the last three weeks, every day he has made drama to me. I hope you feel happy now, Pankaj Nembang,” penned Almutairi.

Coach Almutairi met ANFA President Karma Tsering Sherpa at his office to submit his resignation, where the chief asked him to rest for some time.

“Almutairi came to my office and said he was mentally disturbed. So, I asked him to keep his cool and take a rest for some time,” said Sherpa.

“We were in a meeting with ‘A’ division club representatives regarding the league when I came to know about his status. Everyone, including VP Nembang, who was also in the meeting, was surprised in the beginning,” he added.

However, senior VP Nembang denied the accusation and requested a probe into the matter.

“I was shocked to know about his quitting the post because of me,” said Nembang.

“I have never questioned him regarding his handling of the team and his style of playing. Instead, I have praised him for his efforts in bringing out positive results in the team,” he added.

“I am feeling some conspiracy against me through the issue, and I demand a serious probe into the matter. I am ready to resign from the post if found guilty,” said Nembang.

    Abdullah Almutairi

Meanwhile, ANFA Spokesperson Kiran Rai clarified that coach Almutairi did not submit his resignation. He mentioned that the issue would be resolved through dialogue.

“We have asked the coach to take rest for some time, and we will be looking into the matter thoroughly. Hopefully, we will come up with a solution in a couple of days,” said Rai.

Abdullah Almutairi was appointed as the head coach of Nepal’s men’s national football team on April 4, 2021, for a contract period of one year. As the coach, Almutairi represented Nepal in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

He gained massive support from football fans after Nepal showcased a strong spirit in the FIFA WC and AFC Asian Cup qualifiers last month.

Nepal is all set to compete with Australia in their last Group B match of the Asian qualifiers for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 on Friday.

The match will be played at Jaber Al-Ahmad International Stadium in Kuwait at 9:45 pm NST today.

The Himalayan team is looking forward to move on from their 3-0 loss to Jordan and return to winning ways. However, Nepal has already lost its choice to reach the third stage of World Cup Qualifier and Asian Cup Qualifiers.

Nepal stands at fourth position in Group B with 6 points atop the bottom-placed Chinese Taipei. So far, Nepal has played 7 matches, won 2 and lost 5.

However, the Himalayan nation does not stand much of a choice against unbeaten Australia.

    Nepal Football

With six straight wins out of six so far during the campaign, Australia is anticipating to pick up another three points against regional minnows Nepal. The Socceroos currently lead Group B, with 8 points and 24 goals scored. For the record, the Australian team has conceded only two goals so far.

It would be an achievement for Nepal if it makes a draw or a goal in today’s match against Australia as they have not scored a single goal against any opponents other than Chinese Taipei.

Good news for Nepali football lovers! The international football governing body FIFA approved the country’s first football academy for women.

In a recent update, FIFA endorsed the All Nepal Football Association (ANFA)’s proposal to set up a women football academy at the country’s Chandranigahapur in Rautahat District.

“We have forwarded the proposal for Academy about a month earlier and they endorsed it. The proposed Academy will be built under FIFA’s funding of around Rs 30 million,” ANFA said in a statement.

ANFA Spokesperson Kiran Rai informed that the proposed Academy is going to be built across an area of six bighas of land and can host around 100 players.

In the initial phase, ANFA is planning to construct a three-storey building for hostel facility and will continue with the project further in line with the governmental requirements.

Currently, ANFA has three football academies across the country with none of them dedicated for girls.

Even out of the existing, one at Satdobato is functioning well while two others at Dharan and Butwal are reportedly not effective in functioning.

The Dharan Academy has remained shut over the last five years and the Rupandehi District Football Association is running the Butwal Academy at the local level.
