]]>On Sunday, the Home Ministry issued a circular to the immigration department, Tribhuvan airport, and concerned local offices at geographical borders.
It directed them to stop South African citizens from seeping into Nepal. Phanindra Mani Pokharel issued this statement.
“A decision has been made to bar South African nationals except for diplomats, officials, and those coming for emergency tasks. It will remain in effect until the next notice,” Pokharel stated.
The new Omicron was first detected in South Africa, and it was also spotted in other countries. Governments across the globe have adopted similar travel bans against South Africans.

]]>Speaking at an inauguration ceremony of an industrial estate in his home district, Jhapa, on Sunday, PM Oli challenged the Dahal-Nepal faction of the ruling Nepal Communist Party (NCP) to ousts him from his post if they can.
“Remove me if you can. If I am ousted, I’ll emerge victorious with a two-thirds majority in the next election,” he challenged the rival faction.
“KP Oli is still the parliamentary party leader of the NCP. He is the party chairman as well as the prime minister. If you have restored parliament, remove KP Oli from the prime ministerial post,” said PM Oli.
He also challenged the Nepal-Dahal faction to table a vote of a no-confidence motion against him and approve it.
“My resignation is not the way out. This will lead to political instability and chaos and will recur the tendency of horse-trading lawmakers,” added PM Oli.
“I have become the prime minister through democratic means,” said PM Oli stating that it was not Prachanda who made him the Prime Minister.
He also criticized Prachanda saying, “In fact, he precisely said that he would form a coalition government that is comfortable for others because he has never, in the history, been comfortable for the Nepali people and the country.”
PM Oli further condemned the rival faction for obstructing the government’s works saying, “The government was consistently under pressure from them. They interfered in every sector and every step. Instead of cooperating with the government, they were hell-bent on defaming it.”
Meanwhile, the Nepal-Dahal faction has been working rigorously to garner support from Nepali Congress (NC) and Janata Samajbadi parties in an apparent bid to remove Oli from power.

]]>Issuing a statement on October 29, the World Bank has said that it has approved a credit of NPR 9.36 billion (USD 80 million) for the Rural Enterprise and Economic Development (REED) project.
The project aims to foster market linkages to support the growth of rural enterprises, promote the agriculture sector while creating jobs to accelerate post-pandemic recovery.
The REED project supports Nepal’s ‘Agriculture Development Strategy 2015–2035’ that aims at creating a competitive, sustainable, resilient, and inclusive agricultural sector that promotes economic growth with private sector participation.
As per the statement issued by the World Bank, the project will be implemented in Province 1, Province 2, Bagmati Province, Gandaki Province, Sudur Pashchim Province, and Lumbini that offer opportunities for successful linkage activities of the rural entrepreneurs.
“The project is an opportunity for the public and private sectors to work together in building the ‘Nepal’ brand in the agriculture sector and leverage the country’s global recognition,” said Faris Hadad-Zervos, World Bank Country Director for the Maldives, Nepal, and Sri Lanka.
“In doing so, the project can stimulate many niche sectors such as coffee, tea, fruit, and medicinal products, among others, to help them grow and to support post-COVID-19 recovery,” he added.
The project also supports agricultural production through investments in municipal agriculture centers and value chain infrastructures to ensure the availability of farming inputs as recovery actions from COVID-19.

]]>The Madi Municipality of Chitwan district, the birthplace of Lord Rama, as claimed by PM KP Sharma Oli, has decided to allocate the land for the construction of the Dham.
“We have allotted 100 bigha land of present Ayodhyapuri Park for the construction of Ayodhyapuri Dham at ward 8 and 9. The municipality is continuously working to facilitate and manage the tasks for Ayodhyapuri Dham construction as per the directive of the Prime Minister,” said Municipality Mayor Thakur Prasad Dhakal.
“We have additional 50 bigha land which we can use in case of any technical problem,” said Dhakal adding that a master plan for the construction of Ayodhyapuri Dham has already been developed and a Detail Project Report would be developed soon.

Earlier on July 14, PM Oli claimed that Lord Ram was born in Nepal and not in Ayodhya of Uttar Pradesh in India, which fuelled huge controversy.
The PM also criticized India for creating a fake Ayodhya, which, according to him, was a cultural attack against Nepal. Oli’s controversial statements created a furor in both India and Nepal at a time when the bilateral relationships have already been weakened due to boundary disputes.

After claiming Madi Municipality as the birthplace of Lord Ram, PM Oli had held a meeting with the local government authorities on August 9 and instructed to gather more evidence in the area. ]]>A Cabinet Meeting held today has recommended Dr. Khatiwada for the post of Nepali Ambassador to the USA. He will succeed Dr. Arjun Kumar Karki as new Ambassador.
Since he resigned as the Minister of Finance and Communication last month, Dr. Khatiwada has been serving as the Special Economic Advisor to the Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli.
However, the Parliamentary Hearing Committee is yet to approve Dr. Khatiwada for the post before being appointed as Ambassador by President Bidhya Devi Bhandari.
During the meeting, the Council of Ministers has also recommended the outgoing Chief Secretary Lokdarshan Regmi as Nepal’s Ambassador to the United Kingdom. Regmi resigned from his post today even though his official retirement date is October 19, 2020.
After the post became vacant, the Nepali Government has decided to appoint Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Shankar Das Bairagi as the new Chief Secretary.

]]>In the latest announcement, Grade 12 exam will be conducted online but only for 40 marks out of 100.
The National Examination Board (NEB) has directed the government to conduct online examinations for 40 marks and practical exams for 20 marks.
NEB decides in the light of Covid-19 pandemic
NEB has taken this decision in the light of increasing coronavirus infection and would be soon implemented after the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology will present a proposal on this mixed exam system after approval from Council of Ministers.
The government also has extended support for those who do not have internet access through the Student Learning Facilitation Guidelines – 2077.
Open exam format
The Examination Controller of the Board, Krishna Prasad Sharma, mentioned that the 40 marks online exam schedule would be made public after setting up the work procedure and question paper and if no other alternatives can be arranged.
It would be an open exam mode where students can use books and other material to refer but have to finish the exam within the stipulated time period. 4,32,000 students have filled up the form for the exam.
The board has issued a notice on September 11 by asking the students to offer details of migration within seven days if they have traveled to other districts from the place they were studying due to the coronavirus pandemic.

]]>For the first time, the Nepali Ministry of Water Supply has appointed a female as the Director-General of DoWSM.
Earlier to this, Shrestha was the Deputy Director-General of the Department. She has joined the Department as an engineer in 1994.
The decision to appoint Shrestha as the DG comes on the heels of the transfer of Sunil Kumar Das from the Department.
The BirDhara System in Kathmandu, commissioned by then Rana Prime Minister Bir Sumsher in 1895, was the first piped water supply system in Nepal. It led to the establishment of Pani Goshwara Adda to provide limited private and community standpipes in few selected parts of Kathmandu.
In the later years, the water supply services were extended to some other important places like Amalekhgunj, Palpa, Birgunj, and Jajarkot Khalanga, where the families and relatives of Rana rulers resided.

]]>According to the World Bank’s Nepal Jobs Diagnostic Report, around 3.8 million wage jobs were added to Nepal’s economy between 2008 and 2018.
The share of wage employment in total employment in Nepal increased significantly from 17% in 2008 to 24% in 2018. Simultaneously, the portion of unpaid workers and self-employed farmers declined drastically, especially among men.
Though Nepal had slower GDP growth than many South Asian countries, the nation witnessed faster job growth during the last decade. On average, Nepal’s total employment growth increased by 3% per year. Meanwhile, wage employment increased at 7% per year, compared to 2% of non-wage jobs.
The employment growth can be primarily attributed to the gradual shift in Nepal’s economy from a largely subsistence agricultural sector to modern industry and services.
In the last decade, agriculture’s share of employment and domestic output has declined, while the industry has witnessed steady growth, now accounting for over half of total domestic production.
During the review period, many men have started working in construction, manufacturing, commerce, and transportation. Even though most of these jobs are informal or temporary wage jobs, they are more productive and significantly improved livelihoods than farm work.

In addition to the four million wage jobs in Nepal, around 2.8 million Nepalis were engaged in foreign employment. Most of these foreign migrants are men, 75% are under age 35, and 85% have less than secondary education. However, despite the mostly unskilled nature of the work, the foreign migrants earn much higher wages than those employed at home.

Other Notable Statistics Revealed by the Report
- Extreme poverty dropped from 46% in 1996 to 15% in 2011
- Over 50% of employment is in subsistence activities, and 60 % is in unpaid work
- Only 7% of employment is in formal wage jobs
“The shift towards wage employment signals a fundamental change in Nepal’s economic development and is similar to patterns seen worldwide. As economies diversify their production activities and increase scale economies, employment becomes more specialized and more productive, and jobs are increasingly based in firms rather than self-employment and pay more,” said Elizabeth Ruppert Bulmer, the main author of the report.

]]>He said that Nepal needs to think differently to boost the tourism sector, which is severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
“The world is not the same as it used to be due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and there will be additional responsibilities for our country and the rest of the world,” said Sherpa.
Being a Consul General of the Washington State, Sherpa has been promoting Nepali tourism by organizing booths, distributing flyers, cultural performance with local Nepalis, and handing out souvenirs every year through various organizations like New York Times Travel Shows (NYTTS).
As a member of the American Travel Tourism Association (ATTA), he traveled to various countries like Canada, Mexico, Switzerland, and South Africa to promote Nepal tourism.
Moreover, Sherpa, the International Rotary Club member, organized a business celebration program in July 2019 with Nepali Ambassador Dr. Arjun Kumar Karki and Miss Nepal 2019 Anuska Shrestha.
Businessmen from American organizations such as Microsoft, Amazon, and Boeing, and many other delegates, including senators, mayors, and honorary consular association members are also present at the event.
Other notable works of AC Sherpa:
- Worked with Nepal Embassy in Washington, NRN NCC USA, NRN ICC, and local Nepali organization leaders to promote tourism
- Provided financial and psychological support for many Nepalis
- Issued visitor visas for over 1500 US passport holders
- Supported building 110 houses with hydroelectric power in Solu Khumbu, Nepal, in 2010
- Supported building schools in Tapting Solnasa and Chitwan

“I have gained a high level of diplomacy knowledge, been presented numerous opportunities to serve the Nepali communities in the USA, and have learned various ways to contribute to Nepal and its people. I have built deep relationships not only within the Nepali communities but also within the international honorary consulate organization,” said Sherpa.
“I look forward to contributing to Nepal in many more ways and share the knowledge that I have accumulated during the past thirty-five years while living in the USA and Nepal,” he added.

]]>Speaking at the regular press briefing, MoHP Spokesperson Dr. Jageshwor Gautam said that 788,174 samples were tested through the PCR method in the country so far. Among this, 10,611 tests were conducted on Tuesday.
Though the number of coronavirus cases in the country is about to cross the 50,000 mark, the recovery rate turns out to be positive.
In the last 24 hours, as many as 2,287 patients were discharged from various hospitals after a successful recovery, taking the total recoveries to 32,964.
In a turn of happy events, this is the fourth day in a row that more than 1,500 COVID-19 were discharged in a day. Currently, the nation’s recovery rate stands at 68%.
Meanwhile, six patients have lost their lives while undergoing treatment, taking the death toll to 306.
According to the MoHP, eight districts have more than 500 active cases, while six districts have zero active cases.
