We keep watching ‘n’ number of films coming every year! But we remember only a few that leave a long-lasting impact.

One such Nepali film ‘Dal Bhat Tarkari’ did the same magic!

Director Sudan KC’s flick kept the audience awestruck with outstanding comedy, while speaking about a serious social issue of the country in the background.

We know ‘migration to foreign nations for jobs’ is one major happening trend in Nepali society. Sudan KC picked up the same concept with ‘Nepalis to US’ as the target.

The movie presents Hari Bansha Acharya and Niruta Singh in lead roles as a well-established Nepali family who wish to settle in US by earning more.

While Haribansha enthralled the audience with his unique style of comedy dialogue delivery, Nirtuain wife’s character did her best to the role.

Wilson Bikram Rai and Basundhara Bhusal also did their best performances as comedians in the movie.

Though in comedy genre, the movie did not refrain from speaking about key social elements such as Nepalis inclination to settle in foreign nations, gold smuggling, patriotism, and more.

Rest is all about the must-watch!

Overall, the movie runs for 125 minutes duration with an entertaining screenplay, decent performances, exciting music, enthralling comedy and enthusing concept.

No doubt! Dal Bhat Tarkari is one film that Nepalis will remember forever!

Nepali beauty contestants have been at their best at the world beauty pageants in representing and making their country feel proud.

And, they have always received wide applaud from local and global audience for their charming faces. But, one disappointing aspect continues to haunt them…

That’s #socialmediatrolls and bullying! Yes, you read it right.

Miss Nepal contestants of the Himalayan nation have been facing severe and straight-on-face criticism from their online audience. Unlike previous contestants, Nepal Miss World 2018 face #ShrinkhalaKhatiwada seems to be little lucky and on a safer side of this trend as majority supported her.

And, what’s surprising is that the social media troller did not miss to troll the earlier contestants, taking Shrinkhala’s occasion.

Although missing the Miss World 2018 Title, Shrinkhala became successful in bringing home the Miss Multimedia and Beauty with a Purpose awards.

When Niti Shah, the second Miss Nepal runner-up for 2017, congratulated Shrinkhala on her achievement, Nepali netizens did not wait even for a second to ask Shah as to ‘why she failed to do so the last year?’

Nikita Chandak, the Miss World Nepal 2017, also faced a similar embarrassing situation from social media trollers when she was crowned with the title in 2017. She was badly abused, criticized on her physical appearance, complexion and ethnicity.

Rojina Shrestha is another victim of this disappointing trend. #Onlinetrollers did not hesitate to make bad comments on her physical appearance when she was crowned with the ‘Miss Earth Nepal’ title.

It’s really heartening to read how Rojina felt on these comments!

“Although I haven’t been bullied much compared to Nikita and Niti, I have been receiving criticism for my body since I was crowned. And, it isn’t limited to online. People say it right in front of my face,” says Rojina.

Beyond Fun…It’s a Matter of Serious Concern!
All this started when a known Nepali FB page titled ‘Friday Nepal’ posted a picture of Khatiwada with #MissMultimedia award, alongside morphed images of Chandak, Shah and #MissWorldNepal2016 Asmi Shrestha asking (in Nepali) Khatiwada as ‘how she managed to pull it off’ the awards.

However, the page admins removed the image later expressing their apologies.

“We were merely joking and didn’t give the joke much thought, it turned out to be insensitive and hurtful. They are our #MissNepal who has made our country proud. I feel extremely guilty for this act. Sorry for any aggravation this might have caused to three of them,” said the page admin.

Whatever, once posted online, its visible to everyone and might demotivate the ones subjected to that act.

Similar case happened with Shah in 2017 for her social media post about rural and urban women, which went viral. This drew huge #socialmediaattention! While some understood the essence of it, some criticized badly, leaving her in deep disappointment, all this exactly before her final contest day!

What would be more disappointing than this?
Social media trolling and other forms of illicit acts have left many in deep distress, especially #womencelebrities globally, damaging their reputation and demotivating them. And, Nepal stands no exception to this trend!

    See:

There are many such reported cases, especially the young women in the age group of 19-25 years who have just begun coming into limelight in their fresh career.

The trend has hurt many former Miss Nepal contestants in their career start. Many wanted to speak but refrained from doing so! In some cases, criticism continues to bother and traumatize even years after the actual incident.

“It was one day before the finals and I was traumatised. As I recall it now, I can’t let go of that incident. #Cyberbullying needs to be taken seriously. It really does hamper people’s state of mind and can lead to low self-esteem and depression. I couldn’t sleep for so many days. It almost led me to give up everything that I had achieved so far,” says Shah, sharing her bitter experience.

“I report, delete, or ignore most of the posts but sometimes I reply back when I feel it’s necessary but then again, they reply saying we are celebrities and we need to take criticism,” Shah adds.

Chandak is also seriously concerned about this illicit act.

“Beauty pageants are meant to be platforms for women empowerment, to make a woman feel confident about herself. Pitting one against another creates pressure and inferiority. People feel like they have the right to give their opinion in any language they want to. We do appreciate and accept constructive feedback, but bullies need to understand that the person they are writing to is also a human being with emotions,” says Chandak.

What more has to happen? Its high time for the Nepal Government to bring in stringent social media regulations to safeguard the basic rights of its social media users!

Now it’s time for Miss Universe 2018

In an encouraging update for Nepali film industry, a documentary about Nepali children working in local brick kilns has been selected for 17 international film festivals.

This film titled Dust (Chhaaro), a film directed by Kathmandu-based Deepak Tolange and Berlin-based filmmaker & photographer, has already won four global awards.

The 50-minute documentary, divided into three different chapters with each speaking the process of manufacturing bricks, features children working in Bhaktapur’s brick factories.

The Makers, the first chapter, shows the life of Panchalal Tamang who manufactures bricks along with his family in Kavre.

Life of Panchalal Tamang who Manufactures Bricks

The second chapter titled The Transporters shows two Dang-based workers, Arjun Pun and Bishnu Pun, transporting raw bricks from the fields to the kilns.

And, the third chapter The Loaders portrays the labourers who move the finished product onto trucks for market supply.

It’s heartening that the film covers 14-year-old kids deprived of school education for working in brick kilns.

Nepal Film Director Deepak Tolange“Dust explores an ethnographic story but is more playful than academic. The children were definitely working on the job out of compulsion so it is child labor, but the film is more concerned about migration and about uncovering their lifestyle than about just exploring human rights,” says the movie Director Tolange.

So far, the film has been screened at the Parnu Film Festival in Estonia, won ‘Best Film’ award Anthropofest in Prague, Toronto Nepali Film Festival, Ethnokino in Zurich and the German International Ethnographic Film Festival, among other international film fests.

And, the next participation is going to be seen at the Global University Film Awards scheduled for November 7-9, 2018 in Hong Kong.

Nepal’s most-awaited music festival, Jazzmandu, is gearing up for its 2018 edition in Kathmandu.

Jazzmandu 2018 is going to mark the annual music festival’s 22 years of successful journey since its first edition in 2002.

The festival, usually celebrated in the Biggest Festival Season of Nepal, is coming again to woo Nepali audience amidst Dashain and Tihar celebrations for the year 2018.

    Jazzmandu 2018 Highlights

Nepali art and music lovers are eagerly waiting for the arrival of this famous Nepali music festival scheduled to be held during November 1-6, 2018.

Jazzmandu is usually a mix of local and international talents.

This year, Jazzmandu is welcoming six international bands to perform in the festival in various venues across Kathmandu during the scheduled period.

These foreign music bands include DACH, Nick’s Cousins, Groove Gang, Adrien Brandeis Quintet, Eduardo Mendonca and Cynthia Abraham.

Besides, there will also be Nepali bands including Cadenza (the festival organizer), Abhishek & Maria (who teach and perform jazz in Nepal), Project Sarangi that aims to safeguard and revive traditional Nepali music and Rabin Lal Shrestha duo with a melodious Eastern Classical.

    The Voice of Jazzmandu

Nepalis are fond of jazz because of its interactive approach in bringing the jazz-style music closer to Nepalis.

Jazzmandu presents different elements of music from traditional and non-traditional background including folk and instruments to melodies.

It stands out unique among other music festivals, majorly because it infuses new trends and styles in music into the local jazz scene, in its 2018 rendition.

“Jazz is popular because it revels in improvisation, it sounds different in each place. In jazz, there are no rules and there is much improvisation. It is more like a conversation,” says Samir Chhetri, one of the festival organizers and member of Nepal’s first jazz band, The Cadenza.

The journey of jazz music in Nepal has been successful as evident in its track record from having a handful of jazz musicians 16 years ago to today’s continuously-growing number of youngsters queuing to learn jazz at the Kathmandu Jazz Conservatory.

    Long Live Jazz in Nepal!

Presenting an exciting opportunity for photography and art lovers, the third edition of Photo Kathmandu is all set to keep the Himalayan nation buzzing with activity between October 12 – November 16, 2018.

“Photo Kathmandu creates space for conversations between the city and its public, its past and its aspirations. As a festival it seeks to challenge the limits of ‘artistic intervention’ and create in-depth public engagement on socio-political topics of local relevance,” states an official press release.

The festival will present a wide range of pictures on powerful concepts such as gender inequality, identity, power, patriarchy and sexuality, add organizers.

Photo Kathmandu will witness the participation of more than 60 photographers, art practitioners, curators, editors and writers from over 20 countries.

Moreover, the photography fest will present a platform for 17 artist talks and panel discussions, 14 print exhibitions, eight workshops, four slideshow nights and one mixed-media residency and the South Asia Incubator Program.

The print exhibitions will be divided into phases and will feature the following compelling works in the first phase:

    • The Lightning Testimonies – Amar Kanwar
    • The Public Life of Women: A Feminist Memory Project – Diwas Raja KC & Nayantara Gurung Kakshaptahi
    • Confrontations – Bunu Dhungana
    • Islands of Our Bodies – Keepa Maskey, Irina Giri & Sonam Choekyi Lama
    • There Are No Homosexuals in Iran – Laurence Rasti
    • The Independent Chronicler – Shreedhar Lal Manandhar
    • Something Big & Glorious and Magnificently Insane: Hippie Kathmandu – Lucia De Vries and Prasiit Sthapt

In view of the upcoming fest, a ‘mixed media residency program’ began one month ago bringing together ‘six artists’ from five different countries. These artists are living together in Patan and currently collaborating with curators Veeranganakumari Solanki and Sujan Chirtakar to explore relations between photography and other various art mediums.

Continuing its 20-year-long journey with the Oscars Academy Awards, Nepal is back again with its contender for the 2019 Academy Awards Foreign Language-Oscars.

Out of three initial submissions, Shivam Adhikari’s Nepali historical drama Panchayat secured its place as Nepal’s nomination at the international film festival– The Oscars.

Samten Bhutia’s war-drama Tandro and My Love Promise for Kathmandu were the other two proposed initially.

As a story revolving around or surrounding the mid ‘30s background, Panchayat features the story of the head of a village panchayat, who is proven guilty of the crime he commits.

“A majority of mainstream cinemas released commercially do not match the level of storytelling and technical finesse that we seek. We’ve selected Panchayat this year. It is definitely better than the other two submissions,” Chiranjivi Guragain, Secretary of the Foreign Language Oscars Selection Committee, said in a statement.

Nepali Cinema Nomination at OscarsChiranjivi raised a concern that only three films were announced for Oscars nominations despite the notice being public months prior to the selection process.

“Most of the producers are well aware that their films won’t make the final cut. But we have to choose one anyway,” Chiranjivi adds.

However, Chiranjivi is doubtful on whether Panchayat, though better than submissions, would feature in the top five in the competition.

He was little hopeful that the movie would at least make it through the second round.

To make it more effective, the producers of the move are currently working on technical improvements and sound design for the movie before submitting it to the competition.

Meanwhile, Director of the movie is confident about his product.

“Panchayat might be a story from Nepal, but the emotions it invokes are universal. I am sure that the judges will be moved by the story. And if that happens, we might just make history,” says Adhikari.

Sharing his thoughts about the movie, he went on to say that “the collective conscience of that period was seldom explored in cinema and would make a good story.”

Though there are many movies that performed well at the Nepali Box Office, Panchayat grabbed the rare opportunity of getting featured in Oscars.

Let’s hope Panchayat will perform its best to take the Nepali cinema and its reputation to the next stage at the international level through Oscars 2019. All the best Nepal!

Seems Nepal is riding high on success track and drawing global attention across various international competitions.

After making its mark at the World Powerlifting Championship and marking its grand entry at the recently-held International Toastmaster Contest 2017 with 24 awards, Nepal is again in news for leading the way at the International Paragliding Tournament 2017.

In the international paragliding competition, held in Swarek of Syangja (Nepal) from November 1-6, 2017, Nepali paragliders led the way by bagging all the awards on offer at the competition.

The awards were categorized by overall event, accuracy and cross-country events, both in men and women categories.

Nepal Air Sports Association, Babu Adventure Club and Nepal Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association organized the competition and more than 300 players from 20 different countries including Nepal, China, India, Bangladesh, Britain, Spain, France, Venezuela and Switzerland, among others, participated in the tournament.

    Men’s Category

Krishna Bahadur Sunar won the men’s overall event category followed by Madan Kumar Sunar and Bimal Adhikari, while Rikhi Pode, followed by Yubaraj Sunar and Bimal Adhikari, led the men’s accuracy event category.

Bishal Thapa, Krishna Bahadur Sunar and Nisim Thapa stood in top-three positions in the men’s cross-country event.

    Women’s Category

Women’s overall and accuracy events saw B Singtan in the leading position, followed by Sabita Tamang and Nikita Sunar.

In the women’s cross-country event, Nikita Sunar lead the way followed by Tamang and Singtan in the first runner-up and second runner-up positions, respectively.

    Tandem Category

The competition also selected top-three pilots in the Tandem category with Bishal Thapa standing first, followed by Prem Timalsina and Alice Thapa in the second and third positions, respectively.

A Step Towards 18th Asian Games

“We will select the national team from the shortlisted candidates by organizing another selection competition within a few months,” says Sanobabu Sunar, Chief Coach of Babu Adventure Club, one of the key organizers of the competition.

According to Sunar, Nepali gliders will participate in the paragliding event of the 18th Asian Games to be held in Indonesia, in 2018. “Seven out of 21 male pilots will be selected for the Asian Games, while five female pilots will be selected for the competition,” he informed.

“Nepal paragliders will participate in international arena for the first time, next year. An opportunity to participate in an international paragliding competition is itself a huge achievement,” says Khagraj Paudel, President of the Regional Sports Development Committee.
