]]>Today, the Nepal-America Film Society (NAFS) announced the winners of the NAIFF 2021 that was held virtually from June 18 – 20, 2021, in Maryland.
According to the organizers, the festival featured 30 films from more than 14 various countries.
The Awards Winners of the NAIFF 2021 are:
- Special Jury Mention Award: ‘Mannu: Sprouts of Endurance’ by Ramdas Kadavallur
- Special Jury Mention Award: ‘So what if the Goats Die’ by Sofia Alaoui
- Jury Award for Best in Shorts: ‘Gramercy’ by Pat Heywood and Jamil McGinnis and
- Jury Award for Best in Shorts: ‘Julungo’ by Rajesh Prasad Khatri
- Jury Awards for the Best in Experimental: ‘Spontaneous’ by Lori Felker
- Jury Award for Best in Feature: ‘Mother, I Am Suffocating’ by Lemohang Jeremiah Moses
- Grand Jury Ward: ‘Mother, I Am Suffocating’
The festival has received film submissions from Nepal, America, and South and Southeast Asian countries.
A jury of six female film experts, including Sapna Shakya, Ramyata Limbu, Nina Streich, Rebecca Bustamante, Rita Meher, and Portia Cobbwill, selected the best films for the international film festival.
NAIFF aims to celebrate diverse cultures through the art of cinema. Since 2017, the event has garnered remarkable popularity as an emerging platform for filmmakers with Nepali backgrounds and American filmmakers along with filmmakers from the international diaspora.

]]>Some of the ‘coronavirus preventive measures’ include locking down cities, banning public gatherings, shutting down country borders, and closing movie theaters, restaurants, gyms and other leisure spots.
In contrast, the Nepal Motion Picture Association announced that the Nepali movie theaters will remain open as there are no coronavirus infection cases in the country till date.
However, the Association decided to distribute soaps, masks and sanitary products to all the theatres and directed the concerned authorities to take necessary precautionary measures against COVID-19.
Despite remaining open, the occupancy rate in the theatres has reached nearly 0% due to the growing coronavirus threat.
Owing to this, many movie makers have postponed their movie release dates.

With no movies to be released in the coming months, the major theatre chains including QFX Cinemas, INI Cinemas and MidTown Cinemas have decided to shut down all their locations in the country.
According to the QFX Cinemas Owner Nakim Uddin, the partial lockdown will incur a loss of approximately NPR 50 crores to the Nepali movie industry within 2 months.
So far, the coronavirus has spread to 192 countries across the world infecting 338,724 people and claiming 14,687 lives.
After China, Italy became the new epicentre of the coronavirus pandemic witnessing the highest death toll of 793 in a day. As of March 23, 2020, Italy reported 59,138 infection cases and 5,476 death cases.
China, the worst affected country by coronavirus, confirmed 81,093 infection cases and 3,270 death cases.

The film was a big hit with NPR 190 million in collections. It has grown in popularity majorly for its critique portrayal of Nepali education sector and could successfully grab the attention of around 1.2 million audience.
Considering its significance to the topic, the film was screened at the educational conference that saw educationists and teachers from the entire South Asian region.
The screening began with an introductory brief by Chhakka Panja 3 Director Deepa Shree Niraula, who felt the film was successful for its social critique on Nepal’s education system in a fun way.
Nepali Educationist Dhananjaya Acharya Nepal lauded the film saying, it “portrays a realistic picture of Nepal’s education system,” and appreciated it for raising key issues of Nepali education sector that even Nepali media missed out over time.
“Ground reality of the education system, not just of Nepal but of India as well, and in fact, the situation is same in all of South Asia. It’s an excellent film and also a useful one. It’s bound to take a good market,” said Indian educationist Sharad Chandra Behar.
Behar went a step ahead and called on the Chhakka Panja 3 team to dub that in Hindi and bring it to Indian cinema as well.
“Dharam karam bhi ho gaya, aur daam bhi aagaya” (meaning we addressed a social problem and we also made money), said Deepak Raj Giri, actor and one of the producers of Chhakka Panja 3. This dialogue part of the film created huge laughter among the audience!
The event also saw from serious critiques for the movie, where some of the audience termed it not serious and dramatic in presenting the solution to the problems raised.
“While the film shows a drastic improvement in the education standards of the school [around which the film revolves], it doesn’t show how it achieved the feat,” adds Behar.

]]>The 11th edition of the biennial documentary film festival ‘Film Southasia’ is scheduled to be held from November 2, 2017 at Lalitpur. The four-day FSA’17 event, with the theme ‘Documentary Bears Witness’, will showcase 63 documentaries from the eight SAARC countries, and Myanmar.
The festival, in its 20th year of existence, will screen 45 films in the competitive section which will vie for the Ram Bahadur Trophy for the Best Film with a prize money of USD 2000.
Entries from Nepal
The six films from Nepal in the competitive category are ‘Even When I Fall’ by Sky Neal & Kate McLarnon (2017), ‘Satisal In Inferno’ by Pranay Limbu & Damber Krishna Shrestha (2017), ‘Daughters of the Curved Moon’ by Miranda Morton Yap & Sophie Dia Pegrum (2016), ‘Hospital’ by Kesang Tseten (2016), ‘Save Gangamaya’ by Gopal Shivakoti (2016) and Trembling Mountain by Kesang Tseten (2016).
Foreign Films
Some of the foreign films competing for the honors include ‘A Delicate Weave’ by Anjali Monteiro & KP Jayasankar (India, 2017), ‘A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness’ by Sharmeen Obain Chinoy (Pakistan, 2015), ‘Afghanistan Night Stories’ by Alka Sadat (Afghanistan, 2016), ‘Burma Storybook’ by Petr Lom & Corinne van Egeraat (Myanmar, 2017), ‘Demons in Paradise’ by Jude Ratnam (Sri Lanka, 2017) and ‘Workers Voice’s by Chaumtoli Huq & Mohammad Romel (Bangladesh, 2015).
Other Categories
‘Split Ends’ by Rajan Kathet of Nepal would be one of the six Student Films at FSA’17 competing for the Best Student Film award of USD 500. Some of the other awards at the fest are the UNICEF award for the Best Film on Children’s issues and the Tareq Masud award for Best Debut Film.
The remaining 12 films will be screened in the special non-competitive section, ‘Documentaries of Dissent’.
In a press release, the festival organizers said, “FSA’17 brings to Nepal the finest documentaries on South Asian subjects produced over the previous two years in a bid to inform, entertain and help promote transformative thinking. The festival also hopes to bring in filmmakers from all over the region and the globe to discuss non-fiction film and promote interaction and mutual understanding in order to strengthen the craft of documentary filmmaking in the region.”
The award winners of FSA’17 will be announced during the concluding day of the festival on November 5.

]]>Leading actress and professional model Keki Adhikari has announced her plans to produce the new Nepali movie ‘Kohalpur Express’ with her production house ‘Junkiri Arts’. The filming of the movie, which is being co-produced by Bhadra Bahadur Shahi, Shiva Prasad Chaulagain and Devi Lal Neupane, will commence next week.
The film features Keki Adhikari, Priyanka Karki and Richa Sharma in lead roles with a supporting cast comprising Buddhi Tamang, Binod Neupane, Rabindra Jha and Sujan Karki among others.
Keki, who made her acting debut with ‘Swar’ alongside Raj Ballav Koirala, has also starred in many popular films such as ‘Shree Paanch Ambare’, ‘Fanko’, ‘How Funny’, ‘Bhaag Sani Bhaag’, ‘I Am Sorry’, ‘Mero Best Friend’ and ‘Ghampani’.
Debutant director Bishal Bhandari will helm the movie which revolves around the struggles of three women in their life journey and how their destinies intertwine.
The story of ‘Kohalpur Express’ has been written by Saan Basnet, while Arjun Tiwari will handle the cinematography.
