The match between Nepal and Sri Lanka will start at 9:45 PM today at the national football stadium in the capital city Male, Maldives.

In the ongoing soccer tournament under the 13^th edition of the SAFF Championship, Nepal had registered a 1-0 win in the opening match against the host team Maldives.

Now, the Himalayan team is looking forward to prove its mettle in today’s match, and eventually dominate the Championship.

“The Nepali team is in high spirit about winning the SAFF title this time after it defeated host team Maldives 1-0 in the first match,” said Nepal’s football coach Abdullah Al Mutairi.

Earlier, the Himalayan nation defeated Sri Lanka 3-2 in the 4^th edition of the SAFF Championship held in the Goa, India.

Nepal will play the third match against India on October 10 and the last match against Bangladesh on October 13.

The Nepali team inflicted a crushing defeat on Bangladesh, winning by 2-1 to lift the title of Three Nations Cup 2021 held at Dashrath Stadium, Tripureshwor, on Monday.

Nepal showed dominance over Bangladesh since the very start of the match and took a 2-0 lead in the first half of the match.

Nepal’s Sanjog Rai made the opening score in the 18th minute and Bishal Rai in the 41st minute to give the host country a 2-0 dominance against Bangladesh in the first half.

However, the second half became more excited when Bangladesh scored a goal.

Prominent personalities, including PM KP Sharma Oli and Foreign Minister Pradeep Gyawali, watched the game at the stadium.

Jordan defeated Nepal 3-0 at the Amman international stadium on October 15, 2019.

Nepal maintained its ground in the first half of the match, where either of the teams didn’t score any goals.

However, the second half of the game proved to be fatal for Nepal which let down its guard and allowed Jordan to make three goals.

Salbaya Firas scored a goal in the 55^th minute, which was followed by Ahmad Ershan’s goal in the 78^th minute and Bahaa Faisal’s goal in the 88^th minute.

“As I mentioned before, we are playing for performance not for result. Today, we didn’t play well. I need to analyze what really went wrong. We were really good in defense line in the past five matches but we conceded very silly goals today. We’re not happy. We didn’t play like this before. After conceding two goals in 15 minutes, our defenders looked under massive pressure. It’s not only the defense. It’s a team.”

“We knew Kuwait was a strong team. We knew we would be under pressure but it was indeed a surprising result. We were not stable to handle them. We need to look at what really happened. We can’t play like this. This is really a weak performance from us. In fact they could have scored more. We need to do lot better in coming matches”, added Kalin.

Nepal will be facing Chinese Taipei in its second match of the Asia Qualifier on September 10, 2019. Chinese Taipei was also defeated by Jordan in the match played on September 05, 2019.

The football tournament, of high significance especially for eastern Nepal, is going to start from January 26, 2019, and lasts till February 02, 2019.

The 8-day tournament is considered as the highest-value because of the budgets associated with it. The winner of the tournament gets NPR 1.6 million cash prize and the runner-up will get NPR 800,000.

The Madan Bhandari Gold Cup is the highest-value gold cup in the country, but only after the third International Invitational Khaptad Gold Cup.

The Khaptad Cup is offering NPR 2.1 million for the champion and NPR 1 million for the runner-up.

In order to meet the market expectations, the Madan Gold Cup has also increased its winner and runner-up cash prizes to the current number from its previous value of NPR 1.1 million for winner and NPR 500,000 for runner-up, respectively.

The league is being organized at a total cost of NPR 6.5 million, informed Sanjeev Dhungana on behalf of organizers.

An Eight-team Madan Bhandari Football Tournament

The Madan Bhandari Memorial Gold Cup will see the participation of eight teams in total. This also includes two foreign clubs: India’s George Telegraph Kolkata and Cameroon’s Dauphins Club.

Three Star Club, Tribhuvan Army Club, Jhapa XI, Manang Marshyandgi Club and Nepal Police Club are among the local participants of the tournament.

Besides winner and runner-up, the tournament also has prizes for the ‘best player’, ‘man of the match’ and ‘man of the match-individual categories’.

The best player will win a cash prize of NPR 30,000 and a 42-inch TV. Whereas, man of the match of every single match will get NPR 10,000.

And, the best players of individual categories (best goalkeeper, best defender, best midfielder, best forward and the best coach) will be awarded NPR 20,000 each.

Nepali football team saw 4-0 win against over Bhutanese football team in a second Group A match held as part of the SAFF Championship in Dhaka on September 06, 2018.

Though Anant Tamang placed his team in the lead on 21 minutes, Bhutan continued to strike Nepal until the 71^st minute. But, a second goal by Nepal changed the game all at once moving the team to success finally.

While Sunil Bal doubled Nepal’s lead to bring a sudden shift in the game, Bharat Khawas and Nirajan Khadka hit Nepal’s third and fourth goals to finish the rout.

 “After taking over the national team, I particularly focused and worked on the set pieces. We don’t have any other option other than beating Bhutan and keep alive our qualification hopes. We prepared and structured the players to get the best out of the set pieces and that’s how we won,” says Balgopal Maharjan Nepal Head Coach .

Goalkeeper Kiran Limbu led the Nepali football team in place of captain Biraj Maharjan, which marked Limbu’s first such role as the captain of the national football team.

This victory adds another success story to Nepal’s sports journey, especially with Bhutan, which got defeated by Nepal in all the last seven matches played.

With this, Nepal stands second in the Group A teams behind Pakistan that lost to Bangladesh.

Now, Bhutan will play with Pakistan and Nepal will next play with Bangladesh, which already has two wins in its basket, to secure its spot in the semi-finals!

In the run-up to the AFC U-23 Qualifiers 2018, the Nepal U-23 football team defeated the team from Bangladesh by a 1-0 margin in a friendly encounter held at the ANFA Complex in Satdobato. The only goal of the match was scored in the 20^th minute by the skipper Bimal Gharti Magar.

A minor injury forced Gharti Magar out of the match in the 33^rd minute. Following his exit, Nepal could not capitalize on a few scoring opportunities in the remaining period and increase the tally.

Despite this, Nepali head coach Raju Kaji Shakya was satisfied with the performance of his players. In a post-match conference, he said that the team struggled to adopt to the 4-5-1 playing system as it was relatively new to them and hence could not dominate the opposition. Gharti Magar said that the team would have benefited greatly if more friendly matches had been organized against stronger teams.

The Nepali team is now flying to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Thursday for the qualifiers that are scheduled from July 15-19.
