The current Level 4 Advisory asks US citizens to avoid traveling to Nepal or leave as soon as possible due to the ongoing health crisis in the country.

Issuing the Advisory on Wednesday, the American Government has also advised US citizens in Nepal to exercise increased caution due to the potential for isolated political violence.

“Political demonstrations intended to be peaceful can sometimes escalate into violence and may be met with force by Nepali authorities,” it said.

The State Department also requested its citizens to read its COVID-19 page before planning any international travel.

Earlier, on May 7, the US Government permitted the voluntary departure of family members of US government employees and non-emergency US government employees from Nepal.

However, those who wish to leave Nepal are supposed to register with the US Embassy in Kathmandu and refer to the embassy’s official website for flight information.

The Embassy had put a check to a few news stories that have published misleading information about US visas. It said that the Nepali Communist Party members are not automatically barred from traveling or immigrating to the US, but each visa case is adjudicated individually.

Recently, the US Citizens and Immigration Services (USCIS) issued administrative guidance to the USCIS officers for the immigration applications of foreigners already within the US. This news has sparked confusion.

According to the Immigration and Nationality Act (INC), passed by the US Congress in 1952, people are barred from immigration to the US based on membership in or affiliation with Communist or any other totalitarian party.

However, the US Embassy clarified that the law features many exceptions and waivers, allowing party members to immigrate to the US, if qualified. It said that the INA does not impact people wanting to visit the US temporarily with a non-immigrant visa.

“The US welcomes those with diverse backgrounds and beliefs to apply for visas.  We also respect Nepal’s multiparty democracy and will continue to work with the country’s elected government and people to advance bilateral ties and strengthen democracy as we’ve been doing for the past 73 years,” stated the Embassy.

Embassy Spokesperson Andie De Arment and ANFA President Karma Tshering Sherpa attended the event held in Kathmandu on June 27, 2019.

The program is being organized in collaboration with Nepal Football Association (ANFA) and We United Project.

SVP is an international exchange program that creates a platform for participants to learn American culture, best practices in sports ranging between amateur to professional leagues and develop leadership skills. This program will be conducted for two weeks between June 30-July 12, 2019.

Activities include sessions on gender equity in sports, disability in sports, nutrition, strength & conditioning and team building exercises. The US State Department’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and FHI 360 are managing and implementing the program, respectively.

“Programs like SVP use the universal passion for sports as a way to transcend linguistic and socio-cultural differences and bring people together. Participation in sports teaches leadership, teamwork, and communication skills that help young people succeed in all aspects of their lives,” said De Arment while highlighting the students’ personal action plan after their return home.

Participants will also be exposed to female football sports in the US and get to be a part of the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup celebrations on the field with their American friends.

In a move enhancing US-Nepal bilateral ties, Nepali Health Minister Giriraj Mani Pokharel and Michael C. Gonzales, Deputy Chief of Mission and Chargé d’Affaires at the US Embassy in Kathmandu met in Kathmandu on Monday.

In their meeting at Singh Durbar, both the officials discussed US-Nepal bilateral relations and expressed willingness to further strengthen ties between the two nations.

Recalling US support to Nepal, Pokharel lauded assistance offered by the Government of United States to Nepal during and post earthquake in 2015. He also said that the support given by US missions and agencies for elimination of malaria in Dang district in Western Nepal, was remarkable.

In response, the US official called on the Government of Nepal to utilize support provided by the US Government. He expressed the US Government’s readiness to contribute towards the development of the Nepali health sector.

It is noteworthy that Nepal has recently agreed to receive a major foreign grant of Rs 51.38 billion from the United States’ Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) for the development of road and electricity transmission line in Nepal.
