Many people refer to prisons as places of condemnation rather than correction centres. A prison in Western Lakes – with the support of Nepalese peacekeepers — has embarked on a campaign to change this perception through the introduction of sports activities for their inmates.

Responding to pleas from the jails in the area, Rumbek-based Nepalese peacekeepers serving with the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) have completed the construction of a badminton court at the South Sudan Western Lakes Prison in Rumbek.

The objective of the prison officials is to keep inmates physically and mentally fit and active, and for the prisoners to have better stories to tell the outside world after serving their sentences.

Major Joseph Majak, a senior superintendent at the prison, welcomed the court and the badminton equipment.

“This is fantastic. Sometime back we talked to UNMISS to give us facilities to help start-up sports activities for prisoners. Today they have responded with badminton. Now we are waiting for volleyball materials,” said Major Majok, who expressed his appreciation for the generosity of the Nepalese peacekeepers.

    South Sudan Jail Authorities

Prisons authorities in the area have a plan to offer their inmates other sports disciplines, like soccer, perhaps to establish a club in the future.

Nepal is the largest contributor of military and police personnel to UNMISS with more than 2,100 currently serving in South Sudan. The ‘Blue Helmets’ main responsibility is to ensure the security of the local population.  This additional activity by the contingent was greatly appreciated by the inmates and the prison authorities.

Nepal and Hong Kong are all set for final matches in the sixth round of the ICC World Cricket League Championship being held towards the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019.

In this match to be held on October 13-15, 2017, the two teams will fight to secure the top-four position that is currently occupied by Kenya with 12 points.

Currently, the Hong Kong team is at the fifth position with 11 points followed by Nepali cricket team at the sixth place with 8 points.

The top four teams that pass the seventh round will be joining Afghanistan, Ireland, the West Indies and Zimbabwe in the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2018.

Whereas, the last four teams will have to face Canada and Oman in the ICC World Cricket League Division 2 2018 for winning the two remaining positions.

“It is a crucial series for Nepal. As a team, we have worked very hard to win both games and be in the top four in the standings after round seven. We will look to play high-intensity cricket and are looking forward to facing Hong Kong,” says Paras Khadka, the captain of Nepali team.

Meanwhile, Nepal National cricket team Head Coach Jagat Tamatta says, “The matches against
Hong Kong are important for us to keep our hopes alive in the WCL Championship. It is a challenge for us but we do not have other options. We are hopeful of playing better cricket against Hong Kong and remain in track to finish in top four to qualify for the World Cup Qualifiers.

The Hong Kong captain Babar Hayat says, “There are still six teams vying for four qualification spots. So, it is important for us to win both matches against Nepal and get maximum points.”
