The airport authorities had previously stopped the flight operations as the growing viral infections made the authorities consider the risks. As the viral infections have gone down in number, the airport has restored the flight operations.

The restoration of flight service from Dipayal airport was received warmly by the locals. Dipayal airport also happens to be the oldest airport in the Sudurpaschim province.

As per the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal, the resumed flight operations would see the planes flying from Dipayal to Dhangadhi. As per the chief of Dhangadhi Airport, Tej Budhathapa, Summit Air is the flight operator flying from Dipayal to Dhangadhi every Saturday.

The Summit Air aeroplane, which will be used for Dipayal, would be an 18-seater, and it would take off to Dipayal from Dhangadhi at 10:30 AM. Another plane would fly the same route at 11:30 AM.

The air ticket for the Dipayal to Dhangadhi air route has been pegged at NPR 3,400. One can procure the tickets from Hotel River Side at Pipalla. The hotel is in Dipayal itself.

Khagendra Bahadur Saud, District Chairman of Chamber of Commerce, unveiled this positive development and remarked that the resumption would possibly attract tourists to visit the religious and scenic destinations of the district.

The jet had taken off from Chengdu province and was attempting to land at the Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport.

This incident was sparked due to poor visibility which was caused by bad weather. Tribhuvan airport authorities stated that the aircraft overshot the landing strip this morning.

The jetliner was to land in Nepal at 06:29 AM. However, as it jumped the runway limit near Imadol. As a result, the plane landed at 7:51 AM after going for another landing approach.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) confirmed this in a statement informing that the new decision is due to runway upgradation works underway at TIA.

During this maintenance period from April 1 to June 30, 2019, TIA will be operational from 8-10pm (local time).

The new decision will not impact regular flight movement, the department confirmed.

TIA Runway Expansion

The upgradation plan is the first such decision taken on TIA that currently has a 3-km-long runway. Constructed in 1980, this runway did not undergo any expansion since then.

The runway finally came under scrutiny because of depleting airstrip’s surface, demanding ‘runway rehab’.

TIA’s runway would be pitched 80 meters per day during the maintenance period.

CAAN is undertaking this project under the NPR 3.75 billion worth agreement it had signed with the China National Agro Technology International Engineering Corporation in November 2018.

TIA witnesses the entry and exit of around 400 flights per day including over 100 international flights.

“As of now, the project has achieved 35 percent physical progress. We expect half of the tasks, or 50 percent physical progress, to be achieved by June-end,” said Sanjiv Gautam, Director General, Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN).

Also known as Gautam Buddha Airport, this national pride project has missed several deadlines in the past and has been delayed for long due to various reasons.

With regard to this project, CAAN has allotted Rs 6.22 billion worth contract to a China’s Northwest Civil Aviation Airport Construction Group to upgrade the airport in November 2013, and was expected to be ready by December 2017.

However, infrastructure delays dragged the project upgradation activity by more than six months and eventually, the deadline was revised to June 2018.

After all these, the project financer Asian Development Bank (ADB) has finally set June 2019 as the last deadline for the completion of this prestigious project.

We have not received an official confirmation, but based on the project’s progress, it looks like the ADB is also satisfied. An ADB team made a site inspection in Bhairahawa this week to review the project’s progress. The ADB is yet to submit a report,” informed Gautam.

Commenting on the project’s progress, Nepali Tourism Minister Rabindra Adhikari said, “The construction work is moving at a faster pace. Work has been moving ahead with the target of completing the project by 2019.”

According to the minister, the project was almost 10 percent complete as of 2017 and has achieved 31 percent completion by January 2018.

The new airport, upon completion, is expected to give the needed boost to the industrial activity in Bhairahawa and also facilitate international pilgrimage tourism to Lumbini, the world’s renowned tourist place 22km away from the Bhairahawa Airport.
