The Trail gives you an unseen experience about the culture and lifestyle of around 21 different indigenous ethnic communities of Nepal such as Sherpa, Newar, Yolmo, Thami, Majhi and Tamang, among others, and ages-old religious structures belonging to the country’s predominant religions Hinduism and Buddhism.

Stays during this trip are something special! Bringing you close to nature, the stay homes here reflect simple, traditional village atmosphere, in contrast to those in regular commercial tourism centers.

Iconic Geography

Indigenous Peoples Trail in Nepal is a trekking spot that exists as low as 3000 metres and lies in the Mahabharata range, 100 km east of Kathmandu.

Surrounded by Thulo Sailung in the North, the golden Sun Koshi River in the South and the Tama Koshi peak in the East, the trail presents to you a breath-taking Himalayan view from Dhaulagiri and Annapurna in the West to Numbur Chuli and the world’s third highest peak Kangchenjunga in the East.

Though possible through-out the year, one can have a pleasant experience with a travel in October-December season.

The trail was actually created in 2011 and was developed jointly by the Nepal Tourism Board and the United Nations as part of efforts to promote domestic tourism in Ramechhap District.

It is also the result of the efforts by Ramechhap Local Economic Development (LED) Forum and UN’s International Labor Organization (ILO) to promote untouched non-commercial trekking spots outside the well-established regions and enhance access to them while also supporting the deprived communities living in such regions.

However, the trek witnessed a major blow through the April 2015 earthquake which created a devastating impact on the District’s local stay homes and community halls which once served as major tourist destinations, thus finally impacting the potential of IP Trail.

Now that Nepal is fast growing in terms of development with with a major focus on tourism, the IP Trail will hopefully see its full potential in the years ahead.

The 14^th edition of this annual five-day event features elephant football, elephant bath, elephant walk, elephant picnic and elephant beauty contest, among others. Elephant picnic was added to the show three years ago.

” We have been organizing this festival to enhance human-wildlife relation by engaging them into sports and fun, and to promote Chitwan tourism. All our games and activities will revolve around elephants,” says Festival Coordinator Suman Ghimire Ghimire.

Besides elephant games, the event also showcases ethnic dances, cultural procession and musical programs with stalls covering wide varieties of local foods.

This festival is aimed at boosting Nepal tourism and promoting wild life conservation, and attracts hundreds of domestic and foreign tourists to Chitwan every year.

It is noteworthy that Chitwan National Park is famous for various endangered species like one-horned rhinos, and elephant safari is one of the major attractions of the park.

Despite of its position as a pioneer for elephant games, Chitwan lags proper reputation as that of other domestic tourism destinations like Pokhara and Kathmandu, say Nepali tourism entrepreneurs.

“Around 800,000 foreign tourists visit Nepal annually, but unfortunately Chitwan receives only 25 percent of them. We believe such festivals will attract more foreign tourists towards wildlife adventure,” Keshav Pandey, Director at Green Park Chitwan resort.

The event lasts till December 30, 2017.

This festival is coming as the 16^th edition of the Himalayan White Water Challenge (HWCC), a river rafting festival.

NARA has been organizing this festival since 2002 in different rivers and now, the 16^th HWCC festival is being held in the Trishuli River from Dhading to Chitwan.

Through this festival, NARA aims at promoting domestic and international tourism in Nepal with regard to adventurous water rafting and establish the country’s image as the best global destination for adventurous water tourism.

NARA also intends to enhance the skills of river guides and athletes using this platform.

Apart from Nepal, the championship is being supported by river guides from different countries such as India, Japan, America, Dubai, Turkey, Italy, Britain and Iceland, and a total of 500 athletes are expected to participate.

The championship will be held in four categories and the winner of each category will be awarded with a cash prize of Rs 100,000, followed by Rs 50,000 and Rs 30,000 for the second and third positions, respectively.
