According to a latest report by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the birth rate was only 59 per 1,000 women in the age group of 15-44 years, showing a 2% decline over 2017.

Surprisingly, this is the record low rate since the country started tracking birth rates since 1909, the report revealed.

Looking at more statistics, US witnessed only 3.8 million births in 2018 hitting the lowest decline in the last 32 years.

Age-wise, birth rates in case of women of 32 years decreased normally, while those in the age group of 20 years reported 4 percent decline during 2017-18.

Whereas, the birth rate among females in the 15-19 age group decline 7 percent, at the rate of 17 births per 1000 teens, during 2017-18.

However, there was a slight rise in case of women under 35-39 and 40-44 age groups!

Even the fertility rate of 1.7 births per US woman also declined 2%, causing a serious concern over population growth.

According to experts, the country would have witnessed around 5.7 million births if fertility rates had not declined below precession levels.

“We’ve been given an ambitious and exciting goal. History has proven when we’re given a task by the president, along with the resources and the tools, we can deliver,” NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine said in a statement.

“We are committed to making this happen. We have the people to achieve it. Now, we just need bipartisan support and the resources to get this done,” Bridenstine added in his address at the 35^th Space Symposium on April 9, 2019.

Bridenstine further informed that they will use a human lunar landing system architecture to return crew to the surface as quickly as possible, as part of the project.

“The human lunar lander will be a public-private partnership working directly with American companies to expedite the return of Astronauts to the Moon’s surface by 2024. The South Pole continues to be the target of our exploration,” read NASA’s statement.

The agency is planning the project in two phases over the next five years.

First phase will focus on speed to land the next man and first woman on the Moon by 2024, followed by the Second to establish sustainable missions by 2028.

“To do that, we need our powerful Space Launch System to put the mass of reusable systems into deep space,” adds NASA.

As an immediate step in the process, the space agency is planning to send science and technology investigations to the lunar surface through its Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS), very soon.

These investigations are likely to be completed before sending the crew to the Moon, with the first one expected by the end of this year if a commercial lander is ready.

“Using new landers, robots and eventually humans, we will conduct science and technology demonstrations across the entire lunar surface of the Moon to learn more about resources on the Moon and how we can use them for future exploration. We will move forward to the Moon, this time to stay. And then we’ll take what we learn on the Moon, and go to Mars,” NASA informed.

It is noteworthy that NASA has launched maiden Bird-3 satellites of Sri Lanka and Nepal, namely Raavana-1 and Nepal’s nanosatellite NepaliSat-1 on April 18, 2019.

Tim Berners-Lee, at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), made a proposal for an information management system.

“This proposal concerns the management of general information about accelerators and experiments at CERN. It discusses the problems of loss of information about complex evolving systems and derives a solution based on a distributed hypertext system,” reads a statement from Lee’s ‘Information Management: A Proposal’ made in 1989.

Under the British-led Nekton Mission, a group of scientists have begun their journey to explore the Indian Ocean on March 07, 2019.

The mission formally began at Alphonse Atoll, 232 miles in the southwest of Seychelles’ capital Victoria.

The expedition will do a deep research on the unexplored part of the planet i.e. the Indian Ocean, which has begun seeing the effects of global warming.

The research involves modest high-technology equipment, which includes a device that will study water’s chemistry and also Neuston net to retrieve zooplankton.

“It’s really important. Fish feed on zooplankton, so we need to see its quality, because if the ecosystems changes it may have an impact on the fish we feed on,” says Mission member and Seychelles-based marine researcher Stephanie Marie.

The mission intends to study unexplored areas of Indian Ocean waters, discover new species, make document evidence of climate change and human-driven pollution.

The mission is part of Seychelles ‘blue economy’ and attempts to balance development with safety of oceanic environment.

The deep-sea mission of up to 1000 feet covers underwater mountain ranges and undiscovered marine life.

The seven-week Seychelles expedition is expected to run until April 19, 2019 to trace the secrets of the Indian Ocean.

Here comes an update about a recent violation of cyber policies by one of the mobile entertainment media app.

China-based popular video-sharing mobile app TikTok was found accused for violating cyber policies of illegally collecting the personal information of children.

For this illicit act, the Federation of Trade Commission (FTC) charged TikTok with USD 5.7 million penalty.

Now, the penalty also applies to another similar mobile app ‘Musically’ that was bought by TikTok in August 2018.

According to FTC, Musically failed to take parental consent for all its user registrations made by children under the age of 13. This violates the Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).

New TikTok Users By Month (United States) from Jan 2018 to Jan 2019

FTC informed that the user information made public resulted in some adults contacting underage users on the platform for illicit purposes.

“The operators of the Musical.ly app were aware that a significant percentage of users were younger than 13 and received thousands of complaints from parents that their children under 13 had created Musically accounts,” FTC said in a statement.

This is the largest-ever penalty that FTC has charged to the accused under the children’s privacy policy violation.

“This record penalty should be a reminder to all online services and websites that target children: We take enforcement of COPPA very seriously, and we will not tolerate companies that flagrantly ignore the law,” FTC Chairman Joe Simons in a statement.

While the Musically had 65 million registered users in US location, the number of underaged users is not clear yet.

“In the younger ecosystem, users cannot do things like share their videos on TikTok, comment on others’ videos, message with users or maintain a profile or followers. However, they will be able to experience what TikTok is at its core — showcasing creativity — as they enjoy curated content and experiment with TikTok’s unique, fanciful and expressive features.”

“Both current and new TikTok users will be directed to the age-appropriate app experience, beginning today,” reads a statement made in response to the incident.

It is noteworthy that Facebook has also reported a mass breach of its user accounts in 2018, where nearly 30 million user accounts were found to have been compromised through illicit advertising practices by digital marketers.

Will have to see how many digital platforms will join the list. Its high for the governments to tighten cyber policies to address such heinous cybercrimes.

The latest information published by the Interior Ministry showed that investigators opened to 33,341 murder cases in the running year compared to the previous year’s record of 25,036. By region, the central state of Guanajuato recorded the maximum number of murder cases opened in 2018 at 3,290, showing a three-fold rise over 1,084 cases in 2017.

By gender, the statistics report a rise in the number of women victims. Around 861 cases of women murders were reported in 2018 compared to 735 in 2017.

Homicides Up 16 Percent at Mid-2018

The country has reportedly seen more than 15,000 killings in the first half of 2018, the highest since 1997 including the most-famous Mexican drug war in 2011.

The country’s national statistics office (INEGI) reported 31,174 or 25 per 100,000 homicides in 2017 and is yet to present its 2018 data on homicides.

As of mid-2018, the state estimated national homicides rate at 22 per 100,000 population by the end of 2018, almost closer to the levels of Brazil and Colombia that report 27 per 100,000 people.

The state emerged as the country’s second-most violent with a homicide rate at 71 murders per 100,000 inhabitants during the first half of 2018. Another dangerous state Colima reported a 27 percent rise in killings and a homicide rate of 80 per 100,000. #MexicoKillings

Surprisingly, the aforementioned homicide rates in Mexican states stand more than the number in two of the world’s deadliest countries Honduras and El Salvador that report 60 per 100,000.

Meanwhile, the central state of Guanajuato reported 122 percent rise in homicides at 40 per 100,000, with majority attributed to fuel thieves.

War on Drag Fueled Violence

The violence rate in Mexico was majorly attributed to the war against drug cartels in the country.

It’s surprising that around 200,000 people were murdered since the government deployed the army to curb drug trafficking in 2006.

The northern border state of Baja California has reported a drastic rise in murder rates at the mid of 2018, at around 44 percent increase over 2017, majorly attributed to clashes among drug cartels over control of drug trafficking routes.

As the leading news agencies reports say, around 2 billion email addresses and their respective passwords were spotted on web platforms as open text files, with 773 million of them found unique.

Considered as one of the biggest data breaches in the recent times, the leaked email information was uploaded on a file-sharing website called MEGA, said Australia-based cyber research agency Troy Hunt who spotted this incident.

Hunt titled the leaked data as Collection #1 and informed that they were stored in around 12,000 separate files into a combined size of 87 GB.

“Collection #1 is a set of email addresses and passwords totaling 2,692,818,238 rows. It’s made up of many different individual data breaches from literally thousands of different sources,” Hunt said in an official release.

According to Hunt, there are around 1,160,253,228 unique combinations of email addresses and passwords, considering passwords as ‘case sensitive’ and email address ‘non-case-sensitive’.

In total, there were 772,904,991 unique email addresses (as volume of data dumped on to the site titled ‘Have I Been Pawned (HIBP)’ and 21,222,975 unique passwords.

“There’ll be a significant number of people that’ll land here after receiving a notification from HIBP; about 2.2M people presently use the free notification service and 768k of them are in this breach. Many others, over the years to come, will check their address on the site and land on this blog post when clicking in the breach description for more information,” says Hunt.

Minister for Foreign Affairs Pradeep Kumar Gyawali, Foreign Secretary Shankar Das Bairagi, Chief Political Advisor to Oli Bishnu Rimal are Foreign Relations Advisor Rajan Bhattarai are among key officials of the Nepali delegation to Davos Conference.

As the Nepal Foreign Ministry says, the Prime Minister is scheduled to hold separate meetings with world leaders from various countries including Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc, Swiss President Ueli Maure and World Economic Forum President Børge Brende, among others.

“We are trying to fix meetings with leaders from other countries as well,” said the Ministry.

Oli will be addressing two sessions as part of the Davos conference: ‘Strategic Outlook on South Asia’ and ‘Shaping the Future of Democracy’, informed the Foreign Relations Advisor to Prime Minister Rajan Bhattarai.

Bhattarai further informed that the #G20 Leaders attending the conference are also scheduled to have a group meeting with PM Oli.

Oli is considering the Davos Conference as a prestigious event and termed the conference invitation as the international recognition to Nepali society.

“This is the first time that a sitting prime minister of Nepal has received a formal invitation to address the forum,” Oli said in a parliamentary session.

English Broadcaster Sir David Attenborough, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Prince William and New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern are among the globally-renowned personalities visiting the conference, WEF said in an official release.

Yes, we are speaking about the 2004 Sumatra tragedy or 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, where the earthquake with a 9.1 magnitude had hit the coast of Sumatra, Indonesia. The incident took away lives of more than 227,000 people, reported dead or missing or presumed dead.

14 years have passed! But the ‘tsunami fear’ continues to haunt Indonesians even today, as evident in the most-recent tsunami tragedy on December 22, 2018, that claimed hundreds of lives, injuring thousands and leaving tens of thousands displaced.

The disaster claimed more than 400 lives so far, with around 1500 cases found severely injured and more than 15,000 displaced across villages on the Javan and Sumatran coasts, while dozens are still missing.

“Most survivors have been huddling in temporary shelters away from the shore, but have started to emerge to search for loved ones and assess damage to their property. Our teams are seeing many broken bones and broken homes, and people who are very shaken. Indonesians have withstood a string of disasters this year and with them, so much loss and misery,” says Arifin M. Hadi, head of disaster management at the Indonesian Red Cross.

Prior to the latest one, the country also suffered a severe tsunami in September 2018, which reported more than 2,000 casualties after a tsunami and earthquake hit western Sulawesi.

The country also saw a series of earthquakes in July and August months, in the northern Lombok region, witnessing the deaths of more than 400 people.

Indonesia Tsunami 2018

The tsunami on December 22, 2018 ,was the result of volcanic eruption that swept-off 158-acre chunk of Anak Krakatau into the ocean.

According to the reports, the volcanic eruption arrived at high tide during a full moon, with the Sunda Strait between Java and Sumatra witnessing a spell of heavy rainfall.

The tsunami has reportedly taken place amidst weak disaster response mechanism.

“This (tsunami) is caused by several factors. Our censors did not sound early warning because they are for tectonic activity not volcanic activity. That’s why we are in coordination with other agencies such as the maritime and geology agencies,” says BMKG chief Dwikorita Karnawati.

“We have developed a monitoring system focused specifically on the volcanic tremors at Anak Krakatau so that we can issue early warnings,” adds Dwikorita.

As the reports say, the disaster could continue or re-appear causing more damage. In this regard, the Indonesia Government cautioned its citizens of high alert asking everyone to remain alert as long as the volcano remains active.
