The Trophy began its Nepal tour on October 26, 2018 after its successful journey in Bangladesh.

During its four-day tour in Nepal, the Trophy will cover different places of Nepal including Kathmandu, Swayambhu, Chandragiri and Pokhara.

Beginning with Kathmandu on October 25, 2018, the Trophy was taken to the UNESCO Heritage Swayambhu Temple for a photo shoot.

In a brief ceremony at the event, the International Cricket Council (ICC) unpacked the Trophy for its photo shoot at the Monkey Temple.

The next day, it was taken to Pokhara, where it was put for display at the Pokhara Stadium- the venue of the Pokhara Premier League (PPL).

The further journey continued to Chandragiri Hills via a cable car for scenic photography, followed by interviews with players on October 28, 2018.

“We are also planning to have a meet and greet program with Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli on its way back from Chandragiri Hills. We have a program hosted by Hublot’s regional retail partner at Durbar Marg on Sunday evening,” Bhawana Ghimire, former CEO of Cricket Association of Nepal and ICC’s local representative in Nepal, said in a statement.

Later, the Trophy was brought to the Basantapur Durbar Square, where it was kept for public display on October 29, 2018 before its next travel to India, other countries and finally to England and Wales, the venue for the 2019 ODI Cricket World Cup in February 2019.

The 60-cm tall and 11-kg trophy is made of gold and silver and features a golden globe held by three silver columns.

While the columns in stumps and bails shapes represent the three fundamental aspects of cricket i.e. batting, bowling and fielding, the golden globe represents a cricket ball.

As per the latest update, Nepali national cricket team is all set to play its first ODI with The Netherlands cricket team on August 1 and 3, 2018.

The 2-ODI series will be held after the two teams complete their T20 tri-series tournament with the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) at Lords scheduled for July 29, 2018.

The two teams last faced each other as part of the 2019 ICC World Cup Qualifier held in March 2018, wherein, Nepal secured ODI status by winning over Papua New Guinea (PNG) registering a new milestone in its cricket history.

Not just for Nepal, the two matches are going to be special for The Netherlands as well, as the latter is returning to ODI after a long gap of five years during which it also lost its ODI status in a match with Canada in 2014.

“We’re delighted to welcome Nepal for their first ODIs and our first ODI on home soil since 2013. After the honor of being invited to play at Lords, we look forward to showing our home fans what we can do,” Netherlands Coach Ryan Campbell said in a statement.

Lauding the Nepali national team, Campbell said, “Nepal are an exciting team as we’ve all seen from the IPL Sandeep Lamichanne is a world class player, will be a privilege to have them here. Nepal have always drawn good crowds in Holland, I’m sure it will be a great occasion.”

These matches also mark Nepal’s first trip to the Low countries after 2016 when the two teams shared honors in the two List A international matches under the fourth round of the World Cricket League Championship.

Dream That Came True!

March 15, 2018 is one important day for Nepal, more specifically in its cricket history. That was the day when the country’s most-awaited wish has come true in the form of ODI status.

With an outstanding victory over PNG in the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier play-off at the Old Hararians Sports Club in Zimbabwe, Nepal made its entry into the elite group of world nations with ODI status.

UAE won the toss and elected to bat first, scoring 277 runs for the loss of four wickets in the allotted 50 overs. Chasing the mammoth target of 278, Nepal managed to score only 270 losing eight wickets despite a valiant century by captain Paras Khadka.

Paras’s Efforts in Vain

In spite of the huge target at an asking rate of over 5.5 runs per over, Nepal put up a spirited chase beginning with a 38-run opening stand between Dilip Nath and Gyanendra Malla. Paras Khadka, who walked in after the fall of the first wicket, then put together useful partnerships of 73 runs with Dipendra Singh Airee and 63 runs with veteran middle order batsman Sharad Vesawkar.

After Vesawkar’s departure at the score of 174/4 in the 38^th over, Nepal required the rest of the batsmen to rally around Khadka in order to chase the target successfully. However, regular wickets at quick intervals did not help their cause.

Paras continued his stupendous effort scoring 112 runs in just 103 balls, which included three towering sixes in the last over. However, the task of scoring 28 runs in the 50^th over proved to be impossible even for the swashbuckling skipper leaving Nepal to be content with the runner-up title.

For UAE, opener Ashfaq Ahmed was the top scorer with 114 runs laced with 10 fours and 3 sixes, while skipper Rohan Mustafa scored 51 runs.

Sandeep Lamichhane, the joint highest wicket taker with 17 scalps in six matches was awarded the Man of the Tournament title.

It is noteworthy here that Nepal has earlier secured its position in the 2019 World Cup Qualifiers following an outstanding victory against Canada on February 14, 2018.

In the ICC World Cup Qualifiers scheduled to be held in Zimbabwe in March, 2018, Nepal will now play in Group B along with Afghanistan, Scotland, Hong Kong and the hosts.

The Nepali cricket team registered one of the greatest victories in the country’s cricket history, in a
breathtaking ICC World Cricket League Division-2 match with Canada in Windhoek (Namibia) on February 14, 2018.

Despite a good batting line-up, Nepali team had to face an intense pressure in the last minutes of the match as they had a 51-run target in just 47 balls.

Here is where the team fought back!

Karan KC and Sandeep Lamichhane’s stunning 10^th wicket partnership of 51 runs backed the team in chasing the 195-run target set by the Canadian cricket team.

Striking 10^th Wicket Partnership

At 144-9 score with the last 7.5 overs remaining, Nepal had almost thought of losing it out.

But, Karan’s entry made a difference!

With a striking and unbeatable performance, Karan hit four sixers in scoring 42 runs in just 31 balls, thus driving the team to success at the nick of the moment.

Karan was named ‘Man of the Match’.

Canadian team, which saw three straight wins in the tournament, was short of a single victory either over Namibia or Nepal for gaining an entry to the World Cup Qualifier tournament, and has finally lost it out.

Now, Nepal and UAE have secured their place for the 2019 World Cup Qualifiers tournament.

While Nepal is to face Papua New Guinea, Ireland, the Netherlands and two-time World Cup winner West Indies in the Group B qualifier round, the UAE will be facing Zimbabwe, Afghanistan, Scotland and Hong Kong in the
Group A qualifier.

“I can’t speak, the last wicket made 50 odd runs, cricket is just a winner today. I feel for Canada, one in a million times you would win those games. Things have just worked out for us, we have been working so hard for all these years and eventually it has happened for us, I am speechless,” said Nepali captain Paras Khadka, elated at the winning performance of his team.

Expressing satisfaction over Nepal’s first-ever entry to World Cup cricket, Khadka said, “The fans back home are one of our biggest inspirations and we always thank them. We want to do well, and help Nepal cricket grow.”
