The 19^th century Janaki Mandir lies in the center of the town and attracts tourists from all over the world. It is a three-storied marble structure with 60 rooms and is the largest temple in Nepal. The temple is also called “Nau Lakha Mandir” as the original cost of construction is said to have been nine lakh rupees.

The Sri Ram temple is the oldest temple in Janakpur and is located close to the Janaki temple. The Rama Sita Vivah Mandir is believed to be the place where Rama and Sita were married. The Sankatmochan Mandir dedicated to God Hanuman is another important place of worship and is revered by the local people.

Janakpur is also known as the city of ponds and hermitages with over 70 ponds of religious significance. Some of the notable ponds include Gangasagar, Dhanushsagar, Argaja, Maharajsagar, Agnikund, Viharkund, Suryakund, etc.

Ram Navami, celebrating the birth of Lord Rama and Vivah Panchami, marking the celestial wedding of Rama and Sita, are the major festivals in Janakpur. Lakhs of people visit the town to take part in the celebration of the two events every year. The festivals of Deepawali, Vijayadashami, Chhath Puja and Makar Sankranti are also celebrated with great fervor.
