Nepal is reeling under a plethora of problems including coronavirus pandemic, locust invasion, intra-party disputes, border issues, and monsoon-induced disasters.

Lately, an education emergency has been added to the list.

Amid the coronavirus pandemic, online classes have become the only respite for students to continue education.

In view of concerns that children’s education will be severely affected due to the closure of schools for a long time, many private schools have started online classes for their students since a month ago.

However, the private schools across Nepal have decided to discontinue online classes from July 16, 2020.

Private and Boarding Schools Organization Nepal (PABSON)

The Private and Boarding Schools Organization Nepal (PABSON) and the National Private and Boarding Schools Organization Nepal (N-PABSON) have made the decision to this effect, alleging that the Nepali Government has failed to address their concerns.

The schools across the nation have been demanding the Nepali Government to provide relief packages to deal with the economic crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

However, the government has not given any heed to their demands.

This has led the private schools to stop online classes as they are having a tough time paying salaries to the teachers and staff involved in virtual classes.

The schools have decided to ask teachers to stay on unpaid leave until further notice.

“It is better to stop the online classes rather than conducting the classes amid financial and administrative constraints,” said the organizations.

After drawing huge criticism from several quarters and nation-wide outcry, the Foreign Ministry has clarified that PM Oli’s recent comments on Ayodhya were non-political and not intended to hurt sentiments.

Issuing a statement on July 14, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) stated that the Nepali Government has taken note of the ‘interpretations’ of the remarks by the PM on the occasion of Bhanu Bhakta Acharya’s birth anniversary.

The MoFA has clarified that PM Oli’s intentions were only to cite the need for further research on related facts about Ayodhya and Rama.

“The remarks made by the Prime Minister are not linked to any political subject and have no intention at all to hurt the feeling and sentiment of anyone,” reads the press statement.

“As there have been several myths and references about Shri Ram and the places associated with him, the Prime Minister was simply highlighting the importance of further studies and research of the vast cultural geography the Ramayana represents to obtain facts about Shri Ram, Ramayana and the various places linked to this rich civilization,” stated MoFA.

“The remarks were not meant to debasing the significance of Ayodhya and the cultural value it bears,” added MoFA.

    PM Oli

The Ministry further reiterated the significance of honored cultural affinity between Nepal and India.

Earlier on Monday, PM Oli made an off-the-mark comment claiming that India is manipulating cultural and historical facts by creating a fake Ayodhya, which in fact lies in the west of Birgunj.

PM Oli’s controversial remarks came at a time when the diplomatic relations between Nepal and India were at a delicate stage over border issues.

In a move boosting Indo-Nepal ties, officials of both the countries gathered for the fifth meeting of the Eminent Persons Group (EPG) meeting that began on October 07, 2017 and concluded today.

The 1950 Nepal-India Treaty of Peace and Friendship was one of the key issues discussed, wherein, the Nepali side sought changes in the treaty claiming that ‘things would not be the same’.

Bhekh Bahadur Thapa, Coordinator of EPG from the Nepali side, informed that the group would
re-assess the developments that took place so far and make necessary recommendations to ‘either replace the treaty or to put in place something new’.

“As we have said this treaty will not remain the same, it does not matter however you name it-amendment or replacement,” says Nilambar Acharya, another EPG member representing Nepali side.

According to Thapa, the two sides discussed in detail about the issues Nepal has with the treaty. “Talks were very positive even on some complex issues,” said Thapa.

Besides, the two sides also discussed border issues with a special emphasis on border management and regulations related to cross-border travel, checking of identity proofs, among others.

“Talks were held on overall border management based on international norms by keeping in mind
that everyday lives of the people residing in border areas should not be affected,” informed another EPG member Rajan Bhattarai.

Bhattarai further informed that the discussions were also held on trade and transit, wherein, Nepal’s trade with third countries, issues related to bilateral trade, trade facilitation, port facilities and security were also discussed.

“There are no major differences on trade and transit, and we are close to agreement,” he added.

The next round of EPG meeting will be held in New Delhi on November 11-12, 2017.
