The post Volleyball as Nepal’s National Sport- An Overview appeared first on Nepali Sansar.

]]>
May 23, 2017 was one of the greatest days for global sports and for Nepal, in specific.

While it was Dandi Biyo the national sport of Nepal until the day, the country’s then-ruling government took a historic decision that enthralled the global sports community. In an exciting decision, the erstwhile Government of Nepal officially declared Volleyball as Nepal’s national sport replacing Dandi Biyo.

Nepal is one of the few countries to officially declare Volleyball as the national sport!

How It Started?

The discussion over volleyball as Nepali national sport began three years before 2017, wherein, the Ministry for Youth and Sports had initiated discussions and sought public suggestions.

Though volleyball has come under consideration for national sport status many times in the Nepali cabinet, the decision took its real form only when the Nepal Volleyball Association (NVA) stepped up with its demands.

NVA demanded the government to make volleyball the national sport citing reasons such as less space required to play the game (as it requires only a less area and can be played on any kind of land) and economic feasibility.

Upon the official declaration in 2017, the Ministry said that the government’s decision was majorly dependent on the recommendations by the stakeholders of the Nepal sports fraternity.

Why Only Volleyball?

At the time when volleyball was proposed for the national sport status, other sports like cricket and football were also in the race with much hype among the Nepali youth.

However, volleyball has drawn special attention because of its easily-playable nature across terrains.Volleyball

“Every sport has its own specialty and importance, but to be the national sport it has to be hugely popular and should have a strong organization. Volleyball has completed the minimum requirement to become a national sport. It can be played anywhere in the country, on any terrains, at a low cost. So, it fully deserved to be the national sport,” says NVA’s General Secretary Jitendra Bahadur Chand.

National Men’s Volleyball team skipper Em Rana had also lauded the government’s decision saying, “Volleyball is very much popular in the country and played in every part including the Himalayan region, the hills and the Tarai. So, this decision makes sense.”

National Women’s Volleyball team skipper Manju Gurung said, “Majority of the population grows up playing volleyball. It doesn’t need a big space for playing so we can play it everywhere. Not only players but the whole nation is happy about the government’s decision of making volleyball as the national sport.”

A Way Forward

NVA has been on high alert since the time of announcement and has come a long way in the journey. A month after the official declaration in June 2017, NVA announced its annual calendar with a list of 27 volleyball events stating youth development and strengthening of the existing team as key focus areas.

“School and college events are the platforms where we can identify potential players,” NVA said in a statement.

Adding to the financial strength of the sport, NVA had also added Mayor Cup as part of its calendar to draw budget from the local administration.

“We had organized volleyball festival in 2016 including some 10 schools of the valley. That was a huge success and we have decided to organize such event in all the five development regions to create a volleyball-friendly environment across the country,” NVA General Secretary Jitendra Bahadur Chand said in a statement.

To take the spirit ahead, NVA also has announced plans to unite associations in around 75 districts of the country for an event to commemorate the National Volleyball Day.

Today, NVA stands as the face of Nepal from representing it at the National Sports Council nationally and at the Asian Volleyball Confederation and the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball, globally.

Major Strides So Far

As part of its journey, NVA has signed some key important agreements and MoUs with national and international organizations for the overall development of national volleyball. Here are some of the key steps the association has taken for the development and promotion of volleyball as national sport of Nepal:

NVA National Club Volleyball Championship: Kickstarting 2018 on a positive note, NVA signed an agreement with Nepal Satellite Telecom (NST) Pvt. Ltd. for the NVA National Club Volleyball Championship. Under the deal, NST has promised Rs 2 million for two editions of the championship over the two years.

NVA Award: On January 20, 2018, NVA announced NVA Award, the first award announced after the announcement of volleyball as a national sport. The award, co-sponsored by City Travels and Tours Pvt. Ltd. is a three-year agreement under which NVA will receive a grant of Rs 1.5 million in three years. The association stands for the recognition of emerging and best players, coaches and teams in both men and women categories. “We are also honoring 40 organizations who have contributed in the development of volleyball,” says NVA General Secretary Jitendra Bahadur Chand.

FNCCI Cup National Volleyball Tournament: One such notable one was the pact signed with the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI) on January 21, 2018 for the FNCCI Cup National Volleyball Tournament, which is often termed as the biggest sponsorship agreement in the history of Nepali Volleyball.

The agreement proposed plans to conduct three editions of the tournament across the country at the district, provincial and national levels.

As part of the agreement, FNCCI promised NVA of giving the highest-ever sponsorship grant of Rs 12 million per year to organize the men’s and women’s volleyball tournaments.

“We will definitely extend the agreement in coming years as we have made a vision of developing the sport,” says FNCCI Vice-president Umesh Lal Shrestha.

FNCCI

FNCCI President Bhawani Rana is also hopeful of reaching out to Nepali citizens through volleyball. “We had other options in football and cricket, but we chose volleyball as the sport can be played in every part of the country. We want to encourage local people as we want to fulfill our social responsibilities besides focusing on the economic growth of the country. And, we also want to provide an opportunity to the local talents,” Rana said in a statement.

Secretary at the Ministry of Youth and Sports Mahesh Prasad Dahal is also hopeful that the special programs like this would promote volleyball from the grassroot levels and find new talents.

“The government is making its plans for infrastructure development and such events will provide much-needed exposure to the talented players in remote places of the country,” says Prasad Dahal.

Meanwhile, Nepal Olympic Committee President Jeevan Ram Shrestha says, “Involvement of private sectors is essential for the development of sports and the sponsorship agreement by the umbrella organization is the biggest step towards prosperity. The agreement will be supportive in the development of volleyball and it will also spread a positive messages to the business community.”

There are many other key strides that have been taken over the period for the overall development of volleyball as Nepal’s national sport.

Taking the Sport Further

NVA has been very rigid about needed infrastructure development to develop the sport nationally.Sport

“We will not make false promise of constructing international-standard covered hall within a year or two. It’s the duty of government to provide us with the land so that we can start the construction works. We have submitted the proposal to the National Sports Council, Ministry of Youth and Sports and Ministry of Finance and we are waiting for their response,” says Chand.

For a strong national volleyball team, NVA had announced its plans to bring in a foreign coach from the Netherlands and has also approached the World Volleyball Federation in this regard.

“We are in talks with World Volleyball Federation and the Netherlands Volleyball Association and we are hopeful of bringing in the Dutch coach,” NVA said in a statement.

Key Events

Nepali volleyball

Some of the key national and international tournaments that gave due recognition to Nepali volleyball both in men’s and women’s categories include Men’s National Volleyball League, Women’s National Basketball League, Men’s Asian Central Zone Volleyball, 4th International Women’s Volleyball Championship, South Asian Women’s Volleyball Championship, among various others.

Apart from those for recognition and awards, Nepali volleyball was also played in many cases for social causes. One such was the match played by Ropla girls for the fight against child marriages, among others.

Nepal registered an outstanding victory against Australia in a recent match held as part of the Blind Cricket World Cup 2018.

The match held at the MCC Cricket Ground in Ajman, United Arab Emirates on January 15, 2018 saw the Nepali blind cricket team beating Australian team by eight wickets with four overs left.

In this 40-over match, Australia chose to bat first and had set a target of 296 all out in 36.2 overs.

Though Australia made a dashing start, its batting order had to fall for the amazing bowling performance by Nepali bowlers Durga Dutta Paudel, Bikram Bahadur Rana and Bharat Thapa.

While Durga Dutta claimed three wickets, Bikram and Thapa claimed one wicket each.

Amazing 125-run Partnership

Then Nepal’s batting innings began with an amazing performance by the Opener Ramesh Baniya who went on to score 47 runs.

Further, Badela stood as the man-of-the-match for his 125 runs in 76 balls with 14 boundaries, while his partner Chaulagain scored 35 runs and remained a not-out.

Finally, the team finished the set target in just 22 overs with an outstanding 137-run batting partnership by Padam Bahadur Badela and Badri Chaulagain.

The latest win against Australia comes an encouragement to the Nepali team as it marks the country’s first-ever participation in the 40-over Blind Cricket World Cup Tournament after losing three consecutive matches against Bangladesh, Pakistan and India.

In this fifth blind cricket tournament, currently being held in Pakistan, six teams including the host country Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Australia and Nepal cleared the qualifying round.

However, with Nepal losing out three consecutive matches, Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh made it to the semi-finals.

A Successful Good Bye

Meanwhile, the Nepali blind cricket team players skipper Kirtan Shrestha Duwal and his Deputy Bikram Bahadur Rana announced their retirement.

The two players have been key in taking ahead the Nepali blind cricket team since the team began 11 years ago.

After serving for a long duration, now the two players announced retirement saying they would wish to make a way for young players.

Overall, Rana has played two Twenty20 World Cups for Blind and Duwal has played one.

The ongoing 40-over World Cup tournament is Nepal’s first such tournament in the blind cricket history.

2017 has really been a great year for Nepal and the global Nepali community.

Fighting back social challenges and natural calamities, Nepal, in 2017, made major strides in almost all areas including inclusive development, industry and commerce, economy, politics, human rights, among various others.

Here are some of the key highlights of major developments in Nepal in 2017:

Bilateral Ties and Key Pacts

2017 has been a prosperous year for Nepal in building its image in the global arena through diplomatic ties.

On December 19, 2017, Nepal completed 60 years of its diplomatic relations with Sri Lanka.

US Envoy Calls for Strong US-Nepal Economic Ties

US Ambassador to Nepal Alaina B Teplitz (In Right)

The United States Embassy also celebrated 70 years of US-Nepal bilateral relationship on December 13, 2017.

Besides strengthening existing ties, Nepal also began its diplomatic relations with nations such as State of Eretria, Uganda and Kingdom of Bahamas.

Very recently, a new friendship association to boost Nepal-Myanmar diplomatic ties was also formed. The Myanmar-Nepal Friendship Association is the first such group formed since the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries in 1960.

Nepal also signed bilateral partnerships with various countries for cooperation across different sectors.

Nepali Foreign Secretary Shankar Das Bairagi and the Ambassador of Morocco to Nepal Mohamed Maliki signed a MoU for the formation of a bilateral consultation mechanism between Nepal and Morocco on August 3, 2017.

Nepal has also signed a Bilateral Labor Agreement with Jordan on October 18, 2017.

Indian Businessmen Invited to Invest in Nepal

Indian Businessmen Invited to Invest in Nepal

The Government of India also promised its investment in the Nepali industry.

In response, the Government of Nepal has very recently welcomed the Indian business community to invest in Nepal.

“It’s an opportune time to invest in Nepal with bilateral trade on the upswing,” says Embassy of Nepal Charge d’Affairs Bharat Kumar Regmi.

Japan and the United States also promised assistance and funding for the development of Nepali education sector.

In a move enhancing its diplomatic ties with Nepal, the Parliament of Brazil has also formed a six-member Brazil-Nepal Parliamentary Group.

This is the first such Group in the history of Nepal-Brazil ties and is formed as a result of the recently-approved statute to promote inter-parliamentary cooperation between the two countries.

In a recent meeting on December 25, 2017, Oman and Nepal discussed bilateral cooperation across various sectors, wherein, the Under Secretary of the Ministry of Commerce & Industry of Oman Ahmed Hassan Al-Dheeb welcomed collaboration with the Nepali business community across various sectors.

Earlier, Nepal had also expressed willingness to send its labor to work in Oman thus enhancing the Oman-Nepal labor cooperation.

New Agreement to Boost Nepal-Austria Trade

With an aim to boost the Nepal-Austria bilateral ties, the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI) and the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber (AFEC) had also signed a MoU on October 31, 2017.

The new collaboration will focus on enhancing private sector collaboration for promoting trade, commerce and technology transfer between the two countries.

Here, it is noteworthy that the leftist alliance, which will form the next Nepali Government, has recently announced that the new Nepali Government will maintain Nepal’s diplomatic relations with neighboring nations based on independent foreign policy.

Politics

2017 has changed the political landscape of Nepal and has, in fact, emerged as the game-changer year for the country.Nepal General Elections 2017_Successful Participation of Citizens, Parties and Voters Observed

Local-level polls and legislative polls, the most-awaited elections for Nepal and its citizens, were successfully held in 2017. These elections were held in the country for the first time in the last 20 years.

The local polls were held in three phases with the first two phases on May 14 and June 28, and the third phase on September 18, 2017.

Another major milestone for Nepal is the two-phase country’s parliamentary and provincial polls held on November 26, 2017 and December 7, 2017, respectively. In this election, Nepali politics saw major political shifts with the Communist alliance winning the game finally to form the next government.

Interestingly, the red flag (left parties) registered grand victory in both the landmark polls of Nepal.

Nepal made a dashing start to the first International Wheelchair Twenty20 cricket tournament that kickstarted at the Tribhuvan University Stadium grounds in Kirtipur on December 14, 2017.

The three-day tri-series tournament, being organized by the Wheelchair Cricket Association (WCA) from December 14-16, 2017, is being held among Bangladesh, Indian and Nepali wheelchair cricket teams.

The first match on December 14 saw Nepali team’s striking win against the Bangladeshi wheelchair cricket team.

Having chosen to field first, the Nepali team smashed the Bangladeshi batting order at 77-9 in this 20-over match with its outstanding bowling performance.

In a 4-over spell each, Nepali bowler Bipin Paudyal claimed 4 wickets giving just 11 runs and Yam Bahadur Shrestha took 2 maiden wickets.

Then the Nepali batting order stepped in and the openers Digam Chemjong Limbu and Nabin Rai continued a dashing performance to make a 62-run partnership.

With the loss of Rai’s wicket, Limbu continued his journey with Jung Bahadur Thapa (11 not out) and finally led the team to success.

Overall, Nepal chased the 77-run target with a loss of just one wicket.

In such match being held for the first time in Nepal, Limbu stood as the top scorer (35 from 46 balls with three boundaries) with Bipin Paudyal receiving ‘Man of the Match’ trophy.

“We played a competitive match for the first time last year with a friendly match against Pakistani wheelchair cricket team. From there on, we have been looking forward to form a national team. We had lost slightly against Pakistan, but this time around we have had good preparations,” says Raju Gurung of the Nepali team.

Meanwhile, Nepali team skipper Himal Aryal said, “We have worked very hard. Since we are playing in our own backyard on a back of support from the home crowd, we will definitely be encouraged to do better. Let’s hope for the best.”

Following the India-Bangladesh and Nepal-India matches on December 15, 2017, the top two teams will advance to the finals on December 16, 2017, marking the conclusion of this tournament being played under round robin format.

While Sushil Koirala Memorial Foundation is supporting the tournament, Kathmandu Cricket Training Centre (KCTC) is offering technical assistance.

When one has to think about Nepal’s golf sport in the modern world, Pratima Sherpa is the name that immediately strikes to mind.

Pratima Sherpa (18), a girl born to a couple working in the Royal Nepal Golf Club (RNGC) course next to the Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) in Kathmandu, never thought that she would become Nepal’s top-rated female golf player.

Sounds That Resonated

Aspiring to become Nepal’s first female professional golfer, Pratima recalls her rejoicing moments in her early days where she used to feel refreshed listening to the sounds of golf balls hit by golfers at the club.

In fact, Pratima’s passion for golf sport stemmed out during her family’s stay at the golf course with lawnmowers as part of their employment and has moved her further to take up the sport properly from the age of 11 years.

Whereas, roots for her passion actually lies in the typical Nepali rural outdoor game Dandi Biyo, played by hitting a 6-inch long wooden pin (Biyo) into the air with a wooden stick (Dandi) and strike it again before other players catch it, which she played in her childhood.

Dandi Biyo has been Nepal’s unofficial national sport until Volleyball was declared officially on May 23, 2017.

Talent Finds Recognition

Pratima Sherpa Earns Wide Recognition

Pratima’s talent got due recognition from one of the coaches when she was learning the sport through juniors’ program run by the club.

The coach joined Pratima under his own wing for free and further appointed a member who introduced her to a set of old clubs.

Pratima continued her practice and eventually crossed various challenges that got her around 40 trophies, so far. But, she never relaxed and practices for at least two hours a day.

“Nepal is a smaller country than most, and playing golf can be difficult for poor families like ours. But I’ve got a big opportunity to play golf, and feel very proud and lucky that I’ve got that chance. I want to become a great golfer,” says Pratima.

From Kathmandu to Further Heights

Despite holding such a talent, Pratima had to struggle a lot for getting a passport to fly abroad to present her skill in the global arena.

Even though an American member of the club offered to adopt, Pratima never thought of leaving her parents.

Finally, with the help of her relations, she could get the passport and has recently travelled to the United States, where she stayed six weeks experiencing golf for the first time outside Nepal.

After being hosted by a Nepali software engineer, Pratima competed in five regional tournaments in California winning one of them and made it at top-6 in the two other matches.

A Hong Kong based sponsorship is also in offing for Pratima currently, which requires her to return to States and pursue golf classes at the California’s Santa Barbara City College.

Pratima, currently playing off a five golf handicap, loves to play for the Faldo Series China Championship, the tournament that hosted renowned Northern Ireland golfer Rory McIlroy and Taiwanese golfer Yani Tseng.

“It’s really wonderful to see that the whole of Nepal has got excited about Pratima. They’re so proud of her and so supportive. She’s an amazing spokesperson, an amazing icon for Nepali golf and more generally for Nepal and Nepali women,” says Oliver Horovitz, a journalist, author and a golf caddy, who met Pratima at RNGC.

For the Country

Keeping aside key challenges in personal life (caring for family) and career passion, Pratima loves and finds her ability to balance both in a proper way.

In the process, she is also pursuing a four-year business studies course at Thames International College of Kathmandu.

“I can’t say how far my golf career will go. Ultimately, I want to become Nepal’s first female professional golfer,” says Pratima.

“Royal family is gone, we have a new government and there are more opportunities for women. There’s a Nepali proverb, Fruits of labor are always sweet, so now I’ve been given the opportunity to play golf I am going to try my hardest,” reads her latest statement.

Public supporters of Pratima have started www.teampratima.com to raise donations favoring Pratima’s career. This clearly shows the level of love and support Pratima has gained from Nepali society for her sincere efforts.

Pratima always wishes to give back to her nation.

“I want to develop golf in Nepal. I will give back to the Nepali golf community and will help underprivileged children enjoy the sport as I have,” she adds.

“Any competitive golfer that wants to be on the world stage is working hard. Not all of them have that joy for every single shot they hit. I thought that was a pretty striking difference from Pratima and other young players. She has an amazing opportunity to really influence a ton of kids over in Kathmandu. She’s inspiring a generation of kids over there,” says a renowned US’ Golf Coach Don Parsons.

Golf in Nepal In Brief

Golf in Nepal took its actual form in 1917 when the then prime minister of the country introduced golf clubs following his Scotland trip and had also set up a basic course. However, the sport remained limited to the then Nepali elite families and expatriates for long until RNGC came up in 1965.

Apart from RNGC, which has 9 golf holes, Nepal has three other golf courses in the Kathmandu Valley (Gokarna Golf Course), Pokhara and Dharan.

Nepal’s golf community fear RNGC might get affected if the Government of Nepal’s supposed plans to expanding TIA are implemented.

Overall, Nepal has a total of four golf courses in contrast to hundreds of registered golf players.

After Thailand, now it’s Hong Kong! Nepal is riding high on success in the ACC U-16 Eastern Region cricket tournament at the Terdthai Cricket Ground in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

The Nepali U-16 cricket team made it to semi-finals of the tournament following its win over the Hong Kong U-16 cricket team on December 12, 2017.

The Nepali U-16 team’s win over Hong Kong’s team marks its second consecutive victory in the tournament after its dashing performance against Thai U-16 cricket team on December 11, 2017.

Here is How!

The Hong Kong cricket team, which chose to bat first, had to finish its innings at 82-run score in 35 overs for the fall of 9 wickets because of the dashing performance of Nepali bowlers.

The Hong Kong team felt the jolt right from the start as Nepali bowler Pratish GC bowled Hong Kong’s opener Tej Narain Sheopuri in the very first over of the match.

Despite efforts of the No.3 batsman Kalhan Challu who scored the highest, the Hong Kong team lost 7 wickets with a 45-run score in 24.4 overs.

Pratish performed the best taking 3 wickets in seven overs and Narayan Joshi, who starred in Thailand match with a five-wicket haul, also claimed a wicket.

Das Proves It Again!

Then, the Nepali team stepped in to bat.

Despite a tough start with loss of first 4 wickets for just 34 runs, Trit Raj Das, top scorer in Thailand match, again drove the Nepali team towards success in partnership with opener Rajan Magar and Sunil Bhandari.

The Nepali team finished the target with 84-run score for the fall of 6 wickets.

With this victory, the Nepal U-16 cricket team stands top in Group A of the tournament after gaining four points from the two matches.
