They have once again proved to the world what they are in handling crisis situations!

With the escalating tensions in Libya crisis, security forces of various countries have started stepping off the battle ground and out of Libya.

But the Nepali peacekeepers did not..

Nepali Relentless Fighters Stand Out!

Despite other countries’ forces stepping back, Nepali peacekeepers, deployed as blue helmets, did not turn back from guarding the UN Peacekeeping Mission in the region.

“Though the mission has started sending some of the officials to Tunisia, the Nepali force is providing security to the mission staff and its headquarters,” the Tripoli-based UN Mission said in an official statement.

As of April 09, 2019, a total of 231 Nepali peacekeeping forces have been on ground and there are no immediate plans to send them back, the Nepal Army said in a statement.

American troops have already been evacuated to the neighboring African nations considering the security threat, while India also withdrew its contingent of 15 special peacekeepers.

An Italian oil company operating in the region has also called off its Italian personnel from the war-torn Tripoli.

According to Brigadier General Yam Dhakal, Nepal Army Spokesperson, the Nepali team did not think of withdrawing troops and UN is also willing to increase or decrease the number of troops.

“The Nepali Peacekeepers have been given additional responsibility of guarding the UN peace mission as well as its staff there. As of now, all 231 Nepali peacekeepers are safe and they have been given the order to shoot to defend,” Dhakal said in a statement.

The tensions began with Libyan military strongman Haftar calling on for an assault on the capital earlier this week challenging international calls for negotiations.

Haftar’s supporters raged a clash against pro-government forces in south and west of Tripoli causing serious tensions.

On the sidelines of the session, Nepal Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and his Canadian counterpart Justin Trudeau signed a MoU to initiate a bilateral consultative mechanism between the two countries.

According to Nepal Foreign Ministry, the new mechanism will open ways for enhanced bilateral relations between Nepal and Canada.

Prior to the deal, the two sides also held discussions on wide range of multilateral issues pertaining to Nepal-Canada ties.

As part of discussions, Oli thanked the Canadian Government for its support to Nepal aftermath the April 2015 earthquake.

The new discussions between two countries gain significance in view of the fact that Canada has recently closed down its mission in Kathmandu and is currently operating from New Delhi.

Gyawali Receives UN Appreciation
Meanwhile, Nepal Foreign Minister Pradeep Gyawali took part in the Nelson Mandela Peace Summit organized to commemorate the message of global peace on the occasion of centenary of Nelson Mandela.

Gyawali also held separate discussions with the Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on ways to enhance cooperation across bilateral and multilateral platforms.

Nepali Foreign Minister Gyawali also participated in the ‘Global Call to Action’ on the World Drug Problem hosted by the United States, to reaffirm commitments to address drugs menace globally.

In another discussion, the Under Secretary-General for UN Peacekeeping Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix appreciated Nepal’s continued contribution to UN Peacekeeping Operations.

The UN official urged Nepal to encourage more female participants in peacekeeping missions and also train its personnel in French language.

In response, Gyawali extended his country’s commitment to UN peacekeeping operations for international peace and security.

In the later part of the day, Oli along with his wife Radhika Shakya joined in a reception hosted by Donald Trump and his wife Melania Trump.

In a recent update, the United Nations honored Nepali peacekeepers in South Sudan for their life-saving efforts in the destination country as part of rescue operations during wars for almost a year period.

In an official statement on September 11, 2018, UN said it has given the ‘nimble and robust protection’ award to Nepali security personnel in South Sudan for their act of protecting a humanitarian convoy from the armed group.

Nepali peacekeepers troop succeeded in stopping attackers and saving the lives of many.

“The medal you have been awarded is a symbol of what you have been able to achieve on behalf of the UN for the people of South Sudan. You have served the people of South Sudan so that they can get through this conflict… I hope that you wear these medals with the pride in which we have given them to you,” said David Shearer, Head of the UN Peacekeeping Mission in South Sudan.

Hailing his countrymen and women part of his security team, the commander of the Nepali contingent Brig Gen Nain Raj Dahal reiterated Nepal’s commitment to supporting global peacekeeping operations.

According to Dahal, around 63 Nepali peacekeepers lost their lives and 66 got disabled in their peacekeeping operations as ‘blue helmets’ across different countries.

 “While deployed, Nepali peacekeepers have never shied away from taking action even at the risk of their own lives when it comes to mandate implementation. This is indicative of Nepal’s strong resolve to continue its participation in maintaining peace across the globe,” said the Brig Gen Dahal.

Nepal’s reserve force battalion in South Sudan was responsible for protecting civilians by patrolling across the country, ensuring safe delivery of humanitarian assistance and facilitating a safe & secure environment for displaced people in UN protection camps.
