According to UN Department of Economic Affairs report World Population Prospects, Nepal’s population is expected to stop growing by the end of 2100 due to failing fertility rates.

“Nepal’s population of 28.6 million in 2019 will increase to 36.45 million in 2053,” reads the report.

The report indicates that Nepal’s population will decline after 2053, while it will just have a population of 27.3 million by the end of 2100.

World Population Prospects – Nepal Population Over the Years

    Nepals Population

    • Between 1950-2011, Nepal recorded a population growth between 0.06-2.6 percent each year
    • The following three years 2012-14, Nepal’s population growth stopped. By 2014, Nepal’s population declined to 26.9 million, from 27 million in 2011

“Nepal, with 27 million inhabitants again in 2015, witnessed a continuous annual population growth till today,” the report said.

    • According to the report, the current growth trend will continue until 2053
    • By 2100, the country’s population will reach close to 27.3 million, while the total fertility rate is predicted to be 1.6 live births per woman, from 1.9 currently
    • Nepal will record 1.68 million births in the period between 2050-55, from 2.8 million births in 2015-20.
    • The number of births will decrease to 855,702 between 2095-100
    • Between 2015-20, the infant mortality rate per 1000 births stands at 27,934, whereas it will stand at 6,148 between 2095-100.

“Number of deaths, both sexes combined, stands at 896,981 in 2015-2020, while the period of 2095-2100 is projected to record approximate 2,210,847 deaths,” the report states.

    • Currently, the childbearing age for Nepali females is 25.24 years, which will increase to 31.02 years by 2100

In some cases, the falling population size is further increased by high rates of emigration and migration flow , which has become a major cause of population change in certain regions, says UN.

The UN report also stated that India will become the most populated country in the world and will continue to remain the same until the end of the century.

Over a span of 8 years, Nepal’s poverty curve has seen a downward movement. From 25% in 2010, Nepal’s poverty percentage has decreased to 21% in 2018. This indicates the Nepal Government’s success so far and its continued efforts towards sustainable development. However, a major chunk of its population lives below the poverty line.

Nepal Communication and Technology Minister & Government Spokesperson Gokul Baskota revealed these numbers to the people during his interaction at a program in Kavre district’s Banepa town.

However, he also asked people to have patience as there were many upcoming big and ambitious projects.

Furthering his stance, he said that they need to have patience as development and prosperity are not earned immediately.

“A newborn cannot walk the day it is born. It takes time for the child to be able to walk. So is the case with the government. Be assured that a stable government has been formed. Development and prosperity will be achieved under this government,” he adds.

Additionally, he emphasized the need for maximum utilization of natural resources, as foreign grants and loans alone would not help them achieve their dream of ‘Happy Nepalis, prosperous Nepal’.

“This dream cannot translate into reality unless we generate our own capital for development,” he said.

    Conclusion:
We hope that Nepal continues its development efforts to achieve the desired success and completely rid the country of poverty which is also a major concern of regional development discussed in the BIMSTEC Summit.

World nations observed the World Population Day (WPD) on July 11, 2018 highlighting various issues pertaining to population-related issues globally.

Giving rise to measures towards population control, among others, WPD 2018 has come up under the theme of ‘Family Planning is a Human Right’.

WPD 2018 also marks the 50th anniversary of the 1968 International Conference on Human Rights, which for the first time pitched for family planning as a human right, globally.

“Parents have a basic human right to determine freely and responsibly the number and spacing of their children,” states the Tehran Proclamation.

Marking the day, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) called on public to realize their right to family planning!

UNFPA reported that reliable family planning methods are out of reach for hundreds of millions of people around, and many are resorting to unsafe & unreliable methods, some of which can be dangerous.

Th agency termed ‘access to and information about, modern and reliable family planning’ as the key need of the hour in view of harmful preventive methods being adopted by public against pregnancies, globally.

“These methods, often based on rumors and myths, range from damaging chemicals like disinfectants to household supplies like kitchen sponges,” adds UNFPA.

    A Common Scenario, Globally!

In its release about such harming practices, UNFPA said the scenario is common across the world, in both wealth and poor nations.

“In developing countries, an estimated 214 million women want to avoid pregnancy, but are not using modern contraceptive methods. This includes 155 million women using no family planning method at all. Some 59 million are using traditional methods that are unreliable and may be unsafe,” UNFPA said in its release.

On an end note, it called on health experts, policymakers and all the related stakeholders across the globe to spread needed awareness about health services that can be helpful for public in realizing their right to voluntary and safe family planning.

    Nepal’s Case

Nepal has been observing the World Population Day 2018 since July 11, 1990 with its efforts to meet to the global demands pertaining to address population-related concerns.

Here are some of the recently-recorded population-related stats of Nepal:

    • According to UN estimates, Nepal’s current population stands at 29.63 million as of July 2018
    • The country accounts to 0.39% of the world population.
    • Ranks 48 in the list of countries by population
    • Population density at 207 per sq.km
    • 6% of the total population live is urban areas (5,811,187 as of 2018)
    • Median age in the country stands at 23.6 years

While the population census is carried out for every 10 years in Nepal, the 2012 census reported the country’s population as 26.494 million with 12.849 million as men and 13.645 million as females.

As per the records, Nepal has seen a year-on-year change of 1.09 percent in terms of population growth in 2018 over 1.17 percent in 2017, followed by 1.14 percent in 2016, 1.18 percent in 2015, among others.

With regard to forecasts, the country is estimated to see a 1.10 percent change in population by 2020 and is expected to see a further decline of 0.23 percent by 2050.

As the forecasts show, urban areas are likely to dominate in terms of population concentration in the country showing rise in change from 20.4 percent in 2020 to 35.9 percent by 2050.

Nepal should invest in education, skill development, empowerment and employment to get benefited from the demographic dividend, says the United Nations Population Fund’s (UNFPA) report on demographic dividend of Nepal.

Demographic dividend generally refers to the period, where a country witnesses decline in fertility and mortality rates.

In terms of demographic dividend, fertility in Nepal declined by 63 percent during 1976-2014 from 6.3 children per woman to 2.3, driven by public inclination towards having smaller families and better access to contraception.

Declining birth rate results in small size of youth-dependent population, thus freeing the working-age population to move for work.

The number of working Nepalese has surpassed the country’s total population and a similar trend is expected to continue till 2047.

    Lack of Opportunities for Youth

However, Nepal has witnessed a big pool of young population aged 10-24 years because of demographic changes in the past decades. This group includes adolescents aged 10-19 years and youth aged 15-24 years.

As per the National Population and Housing Census 2011 of the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS), 32.8 percent of Nepalese comprised of adolescents and youths in 2011.

According to CBS statistics, the proportion of Nepali youth will remain above 25 percent until 2031.

This group of young population will add to the economic development of the country if provided with proper learning and work opportunities, noted the report.

However, finding jobs and migrating for employment remain a challenge for this young population group as most of them are living in rural areas.

In this regard, the report urges that investment in human development, targeting adolescents and youth are most critical to ensure opportunities for youth and spur innovation needed for a sustainable future.

The report noted that investment in education and healthcare should not be limited to men as 53 percent of the working Nepalese in the age group of 15-64 years are women.

“So, the opportunity to enrich the lives of young people, including males & females and enable them to expand their individual choices and shape an innovative & sustainable future is important,” says the report.
