The President added that literature, art and music have an important role in establishing Nepal among other world countries.

Praising Nepal for its natural beauty and cultural diversity, she asked Nepalis to encourage people who are skilled in arts and music.

On the occasion, President Bidya Devi Bhandari extended birthday wishes to Joshi wishing him long life and peace.

“You have dedicated your entire life to the study and research of folk culture and Nepal literature through your long relentless efforts expanding over eight decades for the elevation of Nepali art, culture and literature,” read the President’s message to Joshi.

Lauding Joshi’s contribution to the Nepali art and literature, Bhandari said, “Your long dedication and rich knowledge has made the world of Nepali literature and culture prosperous. You did a lot for the nation by researching about Nepali artist (national luminary) Araniko, who had worked as a bridge between Nepal and China.”

Speaking about Joshi’s contribution to Nepali civilization, she said, “You had enriched the store of knowledge by bringing out the importance of our Karnali civilization and Sinja, the place of origin of the Khas language.  Your contribution to the enhancement of the Nepal Bhasha is significant. I am pleased to wish you long life and good health on this special moment.”

Joshi (98) is currently the Chancellor of Nepal Bhasa Academy and has served key positions in his long career.

He served as the first Director of Archaeological and Cultural Department, Government of Nepal in 1959. He is one of the Executive Board members of Nepali Art Council and a lifetime member of Royal Nepal Academy.

Tapping on this love for art, the International Watercolor Society (IWS)– Nepal is organizing the 2^nd edition of International Watercolor Festival in Kathmandu from December 04-09, 2018.

The Nepal Art Council at Babarmahal will showcase 270 watercolor works on paper by artists from 38 countries including Albania, Australia, America, Bangladesh, China, Germany, India, Mongolia, Nepal and UK.

Thirteen Nepal-based and international artists painted their artworks at the venue on the event’s first day.

As part of the event, special programs and an art workshop will be held in Lumbini on December 4^th and 5^th, 2018 where artists will display their artworks on canvas said IWS-Nepal Society Chair NB Gurung.

Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Ishwor Pokhrel expressed hope that this type of events will be supportive in promoting Nepal tourism.

“Nepal is naturally a picturesque country,” Pokhrel said.

IWS-Nepal Society General Secretary Deependraman Banepali said that one of the festival’s objectives is to make foreigners know about Nepal’s natural beauty and tourism.

Patan – Global Arts Collaboration
Patan, known for its creative streak is home to different expressions of art and that’s why 57 artists from around the world came together to add further charm to this city of art.

Micro Galleries, free global arts initiative uses art to instill positive change.

These artists met with the aim to start an artistic movement in Patan’s different localities with murals, installations, paintings, stickers and sketches that were put up for display.

Local co-organizer ‘Kaalo.101 collaborated with the movement to setup an open space, non-commercial creative space for artists to work, discuss and exhibit.

“It is a great experience to be a part of an international project. Many young and experienced artists came together to contribute for a social change. As aimed by the project, it was more of a learning and exchanging process,” said one of the artists, Helena Asha Knox.

A few Nepali artists used engraving as their medium of expression. “The concept of the collaboration was ‘Empower’, which also could be observed in most of the arts,” says artist Rimishna Manandhar.

“My art (The Secret Room) depicts the idea of Lakhe of Patan possessing human-like features and being familiar to the human society. As Lakhes are viewed with a sense of secrecy, the art portrayed the same,” he adds while speaking of his artwork.

“Open art is a bit challenging in terms of the fact that there are people included in it. As we painted the walls of the locality, people grew keen and considerate until they actually figured out the idea behind the initiative,” shares one of the artists Aditya Aryal.

“Photo Kathmandu creates space for conversations between the city and its public, its past and its aspirations. As a festival it seeks to challenge the limits of ‘artistic intervention’ and create in-depth public engagement on socio-political topics of local relevance,” states an official press release.

The festival will present a wide range of pictures on powerful concepts such as gender inequality, identity, power, patriarchy and sexuality, add organizers.

Photo Kathmandu will witness the participation of more than 60 photographers, art practitioners, curators, editors and writers from over 20 countries.

Moreover, the photography fest will present a platform for 17 artist talks and panel discussions, 14 print exhibitions, eight workshops, four slideshow nights and one mixed-media residency and the South Asia Incubator Program.

The print exhibitions will be divided into phases and will feature the following compelling works in the first phase:

In view of the upcoming fest, a ‘mixed media residency program’ began one month ago bringing together ‘six artists’ from five different countries. These artists are living together in Patan and currently collaborating with curators Veeranganakumari Solanki and Sujan Chirtakar to explore relations between photography and other various art mediums.
