    In a move extending its commitment to Nepal’s local development, the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu awarded 200 Golden Jubilee Scholarships to meritorious Nepali students for the academic year 2018-19.

    The award recipients included students from 50 Nepali districts, pursuing undergraduate courses in MBBS, BDS, BE, BSc, BBA and BCom across various Nepali institutions, locally.

    The award recipients included 45 percent of girls and 8 percent of differently-abled students, the Indian Embassy said in an official release.

    Speaking on the occasion, Indian Ambassador to Nepal Manjeev Singh Puri congratulated the students and urged them to focus on socio-economic development of Nepal and areas that boost Indo-Nepal relations.

    Indian Government introduced this scheme in 2002 marking the 50 years of India-Nepal Economic Cooperation, and as a mark of India’s support to human resources and socio-economic development of Nepal.

    From 50 at the start, the number of Nepali award recipients increased to around 100 students by and continued to remain 200 since 2012.

    Kathmandu Awarded Golden Jubilee Scholarships Nepal Students

    Under the scheme, MBBS/BDS student receives NPR 4000/- per month for five years, while a BE student will get NPR 4000/- per month for four years and a students of other undergraduate courses will receive NPR 3000/- per month for three years.

    Till date, the scheme has benefited around 2,350 students from 77 Nepali districts, the Embassy said in its release.

    Besides, the Indian Government also provides around 3000 scholarships to aspiring students in various other fields such as medical, veterinary sciences, science, agriculture, dental science, pharmacology, arts, commerce, engineering, computer science and nursing across various Nepali institutions.

    Meanwhile, the number of women students in higher education are growing as a result of rise in enrolment of girls in schools, a senior Nepali official said on March 12, 2019.

    Speaking at the ongoing 63rd Session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW-63) of UN, president of Women and Social Committee of Nepal Niru Devi Pal recalled Nepal’s achievements in advancement of women rights through the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action of 1995, among other initiatives.

    She emphasized that the girl empowerment made by Nepal has changed the dynamics of human resources in Nepali public sector, placing women in key decision-making positions.

    Stating that many Nepali women have moved away from traditional practices, Devi said that there has been a gradual progress in women presence across politics, education, media, health, among other sectors.

    She also highlighted on the country’s gender-responsive budgets adoption of gender-responsive monitoring and evaluation mechanisms.

    In an interesting statement made by a top Central Bank official, Nepal opens up to welcome foreign capital, technology as well as human resources from foreign joint-venture banks.

    Nepal Rastra Bank Deputy Governor Chintamani Siwakoti says that the Central Bank raises ‘no’ objection if foreign capital is brought for investment to Nepal.

    SBI Nepal“The government is planning to open a bank account for every citizen of the nation and we expect that the banks also play an active role to materialize that plan,” says Siwakoti, addressing the 25th Anniversary program of the ‘establishment of the Nepal State Bank of India (SBI)’.

    Speaking of Nepal SBI’s role over the years, Indian Embassy Deputy Chief of Mission Ajay Kumar says that Nepal SBI bank has been playing a crucial role in enhancing people-to-people bond between both countries.

    India and Nepal celebrated 70 years of Indo-Nepal diplomatic ties amid a function at the Indian Cultural Centre, Embassy of India in Kathmandu on February 10, 2018.

    The event witnessed a wide range of cultural programs including the unique 10-member Odissi dance, folk performances by young teams, among others.

    The event also marked the celebrations of the auspicious Maha Shivaraatri festival.

    Indian Ambassador to Nepal Manjeev Singh Puri and Veteran Nepali actress Mithila Sharma inaugurated the event.

    Of all, a special dance performance by the Odissi troupe led by Dr Sujata Mishra stood as a special highlight of the program.

    Indian Cultural Centre supported all the aforementioned cultural events.

    Nepali Army Day

    Meanwhile, Nepal is also celebrating Nepali Army Day on February 13, 2018 and the day coincides with the famous Hindu festival Maha Shivaraatri.

    Taking ahead Indo-Nepal military cooperation, Indian Army Chief Bipin Rawat is visiting the Nepali event as a chief guest marking the first such visit by any Indian Army to Nepal.

    “This is the first time any Chief of the Indian Army will be present here on the Army Day,” says Nainraj Dahal, Spokesperson, Nepali Army.

    The event to be organized at Army Pavilion, Tundikhel will see cultural performances by military personnel, who will also fire cannons marking the celebrations of the day.

    As part of the visit, Rawat will also hold discussions with various Nepali officials on strengthening bilateral ties between the two nations.

    On the occasion, chiefs of both Indian and Nepali Army will be honored special titles in respect to their works.

    The India-Nepal Folk Crafts Festival, themed ‘redefining folk crafts towards sustainable development’, that aims at boosting artisan-based cultural ties between the two countries is currently being held in Nepal.

    The five-day cultural festival, set to be held from November 07-11, 2017 at Bhrikutimandap in Kathmandu, will be featuring more than 50 Indian artisans and craft persons, and more than 30 Nepali artisans.

    Over 80 thematic pavilions focusing on Indian and Nepali folk crafts, design workshops, live demonstration by craft persons, buyer-seller meetings, food stalls and a Khadi fashion show are among other highlights of the event.

    The event will also be witnessing the participation of Miss Nepal title winners Asmi Shrestha, Evana Manandhar and other models such as Sonalika Sahay, Sana Dua and Amanpreet Wahi in creative designs by renowned designers.

    “Cross-cultural festivals are ideal opportunities for effective tie-up and comprehensive collaboration between Nepal and India for a larger cooperation in the field of arts and crafts, thus providing a platform to the artisans to exchange ideas and explore trade collaborations between the two countries,” said the program organizer South Asia Foundation (SAF) in a press statement on November 06, 2017.

    The event is being held in association with the Council of Handicrafts Development Corporations (COHANDS) and Development Commissioner (Handicrafts) and SAARC Business Association of Home-Based Workers (SABAH) Nepal.

    The Ministry of Textiles, Government of India is sponsoring and the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu, Embassy of Nepal in New Delhi and BP Koirala India-Nepal Foundation (BPKF) are supporting the event.
