Nepal is importing 160,000 rose stems worth NPR 15 million in view of Valentine’s Day 2019!

Out of the 200,000 stems to be sold on the day, 160,000 are being imported from India. The Himalayan nation imported roses worth NPR 12.5 million in 2018.

According to the Floriculture Association Nepal (FAN), these flowers are going to cost higher than last year due to significant rise in demand

FAN President Kumar Kasajoo Shrestha added that the price of roses is going to be higher this year as the flower’s prices have gone up in the international market.

Nepal trades NPR 200 million worth roses, every year. According to Shrestha, domestic production meets 20 percent of the market demand and the rest is imported.

Interestingly, Kathmandu Valley alone consumes over 60 percent of the imported roses.

Last year, roses were priced in the range of NPR 40-80, and the price is expected to go up to NPR 50-100 this year, showing an 15 percent year-on-year rise.

Celebrating Valentine’s Day is a western culture. However, it has become a fad in Nepal over the past couple of years.

Valentine’s day celebrations start a week in advance, with each day dedicated to a special thing.

In view of the upcoming festival preparations, the Himalayan nation will be importing flowers and garlands worth Rs 110 million.

According to the Floriculture Association Nepal (FAN) President Kumar Kasaju, Nepal is importing around 300,000 garlands with different sorts of flowers from India for Tihar.

Close to NPR 160 million of flowers, flower garlands and vases are traded in the Kathmandu Valley during the first three days of Tihar. Flowers are imported from Bhaktapur’s Gundu, Kathmandu’s Ichangunarayan, Thankot and Nuvakot among others.

Kathmandu alone requires 1.5-1.7 million garlands for the fifth and most special day of the five-day festival called Bhaitika,.

Marigold & Makhamali (globe amarnath) flowers & garlands are widely sold and used during Tihar festival. 

During Dashain, the sale of marigold garlands stands at around NPR 1 million per 300,000 units. Additionally, 300,000 units of Makhamali and 100,000 units of Marigold are imported in the Kathmandu Valley, with 30 percent of them from India.

Floriculture Scenario in Nepal
As per FAN, Nepali farmers have not yet developed a keen interest in floriculture owing to various reasons. Moreover, floriculture farmers in Nepal are still applying traditional farming practices.

FAN General Secretary Bishwamani Pokhrel opines that the import of flowers cannot be substituted until farmers understand that floriculture is not only a means of making a livelihood, but also a good source of income.

Floriculture formally began in 2011 BS with the establishment of Nepal Private Nursery and has expanded to 43 districts till date. The practice is conducted on 115 hectares of land in Nepal.

To promote floriculture in the country, Nepal Government had established the ‘Flower Promotion Policy 2069’. Additionally, in 2071-72 BS, the Government allocated a budget of NPR 10 million for floriculture. However, this fiscal year only NPR 1.6 million was allocated for the same.

The Demand & Supply Deficit
Nepali cut flowers including gerbera, gladiolus, Godawari, marigold and rose have a high demand in foreign countries such as The Netherlands, Thailand and USA among others.

However, the supply of flowers is less when compared to its high demand.

The four-day exhibition, inaugured by the Nepali Minister of State for Agricultural Development Sarita Prasai, is a free event and is being held from October 12-15, 2017. While the Chrysanthemum Flower Expo 2016 recorded around 30,000 visitors, the organizers expect around 35,000 visitors this time.

The 2017 expo is hosting 3 Chrysanthemum competitive stalls, 3 informative stalls and 44 business stalls. Besides, various types of chrysanthemum flowers and other seasonal flowers, dry flowers, decorative plants, compost fertilizers and tools are also being showcased at the exhibition. 

As a special attraction, the expo is also hosting a competition between flower producers of the country with an aim to encourage them to bring in quality flowers into the market.

The expo, being organized by the Floriculture Association Nepal (FAN), aims at promoting the domestic floriculture industry.
