Nepal Ministry of Women, Children and Senior Citizens along with representatives of various organizations conducted a morning procession to mark the significance of this day.

Nepal Police, Rights Activists and citizens participated in the rally that passed through Bhadrakali, Sahid Gate, Naya Sadak, Ratna Park and ended at the Rastriya Sabha Griha.

Authorities Speak:
Minister for Women, Children and Senior Citizens Thama Maya Thapa addressed the gathering and said that trafficking persons was a serious crime.

Thapa pitched for people’s support to gradually eliminate this menace and extended the Ministry’s support to organizations fighting against human trafficking.

President of Media Mobilization for Sustainable Development Neha Sharma said that the problem will not be solved until the huge racket of human trafficking was disrupted. She also emphasized on increasing public awareness to counter this problem.

Speakers like President of Biswas Nepal Tara Bhandari and Representatives of Change Nepal Barsha Luintel stressed on the introduction of stringent laws and punishment for individuals involved in the crime.

The procession was led by a Nepali police band playing cultural music from Bhrikutimandap in Kathmandu.

Statistics for Human Trafficking in Nepal:

• Nepali girls are trafficked to Middle East countries and Asian countries
• Most of them are sold to brothels, forced into labor or marriage and suffer organ removal
• UNICEF data shows that 12,000 children are trafficked from Nepal to India every year
• This crime is rampant between the regions because of the easy passage between the two countries, lack of surveillance infrastructure and stringent authentication procedures
• The percentage of girls trafficked into India increased by 500% over the past 5 years
• Close to 210 Nepali women and children were rescued in the last three years from Jhulaghat in Nepal
• Maiti Nepal is the regulatory body for human trafficking in Nepal and has saved 39,964 girls/women from being trafficked to other countries

A future action plan revealed by the MoWCSW states that it will also enforce an Anti-corporal Punishment policy.

The said policy will implement children safety that is threatened by bullying and its adverse effects.

Studies and Surveys conducted on Bullying:
The Knowledge, Attitude and Practices Survey 2015 conducted by the Ministry, reveals the following findings:

• About 88.9 percent district level education representatives said that a considerable number of children from their districts were bullied at school on a regular basis
• 1 percent of the Nepal household girls and boys questionnaires respondents, who have been at school for some point of time, said that they experienced physical or psychological peer violence

According to a 2016 UNICEF study, psychological bullying and hazing by adults or other children through Information and Communication technologies (ICTs) or Cyber-bullying was a serious form of mental violence against South Asian children.

The study also warned that easy access to the Internet and growing popularity of camera-equipped smartphones had led to the rise of cyber bullying.

Additional Provisions of the MoWCSW Anti-Bullying Policy:
The Ministry also says that it will establish and run an integrated rehabilitation center and well-furnished old age homes to care for women and children who have been victims of bullying and senior citizens.

“The ministry will also set up a help desk at the central level to receive and redress the grievances of women, children, persons with disabilities and senior citizens. Rapid response teams comprising representatives from civil society, teachers and journalists will be formed for immediate rescue and protection of victim women and children,” informs the MoWCSW.

Interestingly, the Ministry says it will work closely with transport operators to establish women safety on public transport.

Early last year, cops in plain clothes nabbed over 80 persons for sexually harassing female passengers availing public transport.

Existing Nepal Laws define sexual assault as any form of sexual contact or actions like tapping, touching and showing sexually explicit pictures/videos to persons without their consent.
