As the world was watching, the country’s weightlifting contestant Sanju Chaudhary set three new national records at the 18^th edition of ASIAD currently underway in Jakarta of Indonesia.

In the women’s 53-kg division bettering, Chaudhary lifted 72-kg in snatch and 86-kg in clean & jerk, accounting to a total lifting capacity of 158-kg.

With this, Choudhary broke her own national record she had set earlier with 71-kg in snatch and 85-kg in clean & jerk accounting to a total weight of 156-kg in the Asian Games Selection in June earlier this year.

However, Chaudhary failed to beat her 12 opponents in the championship and was spotted at the bottom position below contestants from Philippines, Turkmenistan and Thailand, among others.

Unfortunately, the country also saw the downfall of its Taekwondo and Swimming contestants & 2016 Rio Olympians Nisha Rawal and Sirish Gurung, on the same day, alongside weightlifting that lifted the country a little!

“We need to evaluate our performance rather than focusing on medal. Other countries have made huge investment in taekwondo, but we are in the same standard as we were four years ago. If things go the same way, we will remain at the same level four years later as well. The players have done what they needed to,” says Nepal Taekwondo Coach Bista.

“I will try to give my best in the 100m freestyle,” said Gurung.

Hope their relentless efforts haunted by continuous challenges will bring the best to Nepali contestants in the ongoing Asian Games 2018.

After making its mark at the World Powerlifting Championship and marking its grand entry at the recently-held International Toastmaster Contest 2017 with 24 awards, Nepal is again in news for leading the way at the International Paragliding Tournament 2017.

In the international paragliding competition, held in Swarek of Syangja (Nepal) from November 1-6, 2017, Nepali paragliders led the way by bagging all the awards on offer at the competition.

The awards were categorized by overall event, accuracy and cross-country events, both in men and women categories.

Nepal Air Sports Association, Babu Adventure Club and Nepal Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association organized the competition and more than 300 players from 20 different countries including Nepal, China, India, Bangladesh, Britain, Spain, France, Venezuela and Switzerland, among others, participated in the tournament.

Men’s Category

Krishna Bahadur Sunar won the men’s overall event category followed by Madan Kumar Sunar and Bimal Adhikari, while Rikhi Pode, followed by Yubaraj Sunar and Bimal Adhikari, led the men’s accuracy event category.

Bishal Thapa, Krishna Bahadur Sunar and Nisim Thapa stood in top-three positions in the men’s cross-country event.

Women’s Category

Women’s overall and accuracy events saw B Singtan in the leading position, followed by Sabita Tamang and Nikita Sunar.

In the women’s cross-country event, Nikita Sunar lead the way followed by Tamang and Singtan in the first runner-up and second runner-up positions, respectively.

Tandem Category

The competition also selected top-three pilots in the Tandem category with Bishal Thapa standing first, followed by Prem Timalsina and Alice Thapa in the second and third positions, respectively.

A Step Towards 18th Asian Games

“We will select the national team from the shortlisted candidates by organizing another selection competition within a few months,” says Sanobabu Sunar, Chief Coach of Babu Adventure Club, one of the key organizers of the competition.

According to Sunar, Nepali gliders will participate in the paragliding event of the 18th Asian Games to be held in Indonesia, in 2018. “Seven out of 21 male pilots will be selected for the Asian Games, while five female pilots will be selected for the competition,” he informed.

“Nepal paragliders will participate in international arena for the first time, next year. An opportunity to participate in an international paragliding competition is itself a huge achievement,” says Khagraj Paudel, President of the Regional Sports Development Committee.

Two Nepali sportspersons, Judokas Indra Bahadur Shrestha and Manita Pradhan, are participating in the World Junior Judo Championship at Zagreb, Croatia being held from October 14-24, 2017.

Indra Bahadur and Manita Pradhan are representing Nepal in the men’s U-66 kg and women’s U-57 kg weight categories, respectively.

“This is the first time that Nepal is participating in junior world championship,” says Deepak Harsha Bajracharya, President of Nepal Judo Association (NJA).

National Coach Dal Bahadur Gurung and the team manager Babu Raja Maharjan are the other members of the Nepali team. 

The Member Secretary of the National Sports Council (NSC) Keshav Kumar Bista offered a farewell to the Nepali contestants at a program in Kathmandu, on October 13, 2017 and have left for Croatia on October 14, 2017. 

Good Opportunity for Nepali Players

Elated at the country’s participation, Bajracharya expressed hope that the championship would be a great platform for the Nepali participants for their future. They are currently at the age of 18 years.

“Our players have lots of international exposure and by the time they reach 21 years, which is the prime time of their judo career, we can expect medals from them,” he added.

Bajracharya further informed that the goodwill of NJA has helped the Nepali contestants in getting support from the international judo fraternity in the form of an international judo coach.

“The International Judo Federation (IJF) has appointed a Romanian judo coach Dan Telearca for us for a year. IJF will bear all the cost of his fees and tickets while NJA will pay for the local hospitality and transportation of the coach,” he said.

NJA To Deploy Advanced Technology

In a move towards adopting the new digital technology soon, NJA is sending two national experts, Suprasiddha Tamrakar and Rajiv Pradhan, to Indonesia for technical training, informed Bajracharya.

“Digital technology is fast replacing manual trend in officiating matches. So, we are equally concerned in this front. We are not just sending players abroad for exposure but also technical experts and coaches for enhancing their skills,” he said.
