It has become very common among theatre enthusiasts from various parts of the country to travel to Kathmandu to learn acting and other theatre-related courses, because of the lack of theatre houses and schools outside Kathmandu. Keeping this in view, theatre artist Krishna Udasi has set up a theatre school—National Art School—in Lekhnath, Pokhara.

The school started its first session last week and is currently teaching 17 students.

Udasi said that Pokhara has a special place in Nepali theatre scene, but only few theatre artists are performing at the national level. Their aim is to ensure the participation of more actors from the west at the national level.

He further said that they are initially planning to provide only acting classes and going forward they will think about expansion. The acting course will cover three months of acting lessons and one month of a production course. They will also have various meditation, yoga, martial art, music and dance workshops during this period.

Udasi said that the school is looking to produce 60 artists every year.

Parikshya Lamichanne from Mandala Theatre is the chief instructor of the institute. Other instructors include Sarita Giri, Krishna Udasi, Bikash Joshi, Komalanada Yoga, Ghansyam Pun and Dipak Godar.
