In this regard, BBC entered into a deal with a Nepali production house ANC Productions, who will be producing and distributing the 26-episode show series in Nepal.

Towards this end, a deal was also signed between Ron Crasto, head of the New Business Development, OTT and Digital division of BBC Studios, South Asia and Vivek Singh, Director, ANC Productions.

“We have produced Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa, the Hindi version of Dancing with the Stars for eight seasons now and are excited to see how it will be received in Nepal. We hope that the Nepali audience will support the new series, and expect that the series will dazzle viewers in Nepal as it has in India,” says Myleeta Aga, SVP and GM of South and South-East Asia, BBC Studios, said.

In response, Vivek Singh, Director of ANC Productions said, “The people of Nepal have immense love for dance and we are ready to enthrall them with stellar performances. It is a pleasure to work with BBC Studios and to be a part of the growing Dancing with the Stars community.”

With this deal, the dancing reality show has expanded to 57 countries, globally.

This multi-award winner reality show will have the local celebrities partnering with professional dancers to perform in a dance competition. As part of the show, the contestants will have to keep learning new dance to present them before the panel of judges for winning the show.

Nepali film industry drew a special recognition in the New York Nepali Film Festival by winning three awards for its indigenous film Lomba.

Nepali Film Director Deepak Rauniyar achieved global recognition for his films Highway and White Sun, and The New York Times named him among ‘The 9 New Directors You Need to Watch’.

Kutu ma Kutu, a Nepali song from a Nepali movie Dui Rupaiyan, has also registered a new record on YouTube with over 10 million views within just 49 days of its release. This was a rare feat a Nepali music video has ever achieved till then.

A renowned Nepali music band Nepathya also completed its 25 years of musical journey in 2017.

Besides, various Nepali musicians have also embarked on foreign tours attracting huge global audience across countries such as London, among others.

Nepal also hosted many national and international level events in 2017 including: 11^th edition of the South Asian film festival called Film Southasia (FSA)- A festival of South Asian documentaries, South Asian Conference, Biggest Online Food Festival by Foodmandu, photo exhibitions, Nepal Chamber Expo 2017, Global Conference on Climate Change, 15th Handicraft Trade Fair and 13th Craft Competition of Nepal, among others.

In a major update in 2017, the Government of Nepal honored the renowned Nepali scholar and writer Satya Mohan Joshi with the ‘‘Litterateur of the Century’ title on August 23, 2017.

Meanwhile, Nepali golfer Pratima Sherpa also rose to fame in 2017 as the country’s first professional female golfer.

Pratima Sherpa (18), a girl born to a couple working in the Royal Nepal Golf Club (RNGC) course next to the Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) in Kathmandu, never thought that she would become Nepal’s top-rated female golf player.

The internationally-acclaimed Nepali surgeon and the Founder & Executive Director of the Tilganga Institute of Ophthalmology Dr. Sanduk Ruit’s thoughts and vision were featured in Genius, the world’s first 3D-printed book, in September 2017.

National football goalkeeper Kiran Kumar Limbu and shuttler Nangsal Devi Tamang are the best players of the year, declared the 14^th edition of Nepal Journalists Forum (NSJF) Pulsar Sports Award in Kathmandu, yesterday.

The NSJF Pulsar Sports Award 2017, which covered sportspersons in various categories, honored Limbu and Tamang with the ‘Player of the Year’ title in the Male and Female categories, respectively.

Other sportsmen who competed with Limbu in the Male category include badminton’s Ratnajit Tamang, cricketer Sharad Vewaskar, athlete Som Bahadur Kumal and Man Bahadur Shrestha of volleyball.

Whereas, archery’s Gyanu Awale, athletes Kanchi Maya Koju and Saraswati Bhattarai, and football’s Sabitra Bhandari challenged Tamang in the Female category.

Limbu’s mother received the award on his behalf as he has gone for a match in Maldives.

In response to the award, Tamang said, “I was nominated for this award couple of years back, but this time I have finally bagged it. I want to dedicate this award to everyone including my family, coaching team, Nepal Badminton Association and Citizens Bank who have helped me through my career.”

Other Key Titles

While the national volleyball men’s team was declared as the ‘Team of the Year’, athlete coach Pushpa Raj Ojha grabbed the ‘Coach of the Year’ title, Manita Shrestha Pradhan received the ‘Youth Player of the Year’ award and athlete Kanchi Maya Koju won the ‘People’s Choice’ award that was declared on the basis of SMS and Facebook likes.

Meanwhile, Nepal’s first golfer Ghana Shyam Thapa was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award and Padam Badela received the Para-athlete award.

Prisoners Assistance Mission also received a special award on the occasion.

Each of the ‘Player of the Year’ title winners, in both Male and Female categories, were rewarded a Pulsar motorcycle and Rs 50,000 cash prize. Whereas, other sportspersons in the remaining categories received a cash prize of Rs 50,000 per head.
