The government of Nepal is all set to convert nearly 2 million paper-based driving licences to smart driving licences throughout the country within a year, according to Roop Narayan Bhattarai, Director General of Nepal’s Department of Transport Management (DoTM). Smart licence helps the government authority to prevent duplication of paper licences and keep electronic records of vehicles and vehicle owners. Cardholder’s biometric data, traffic violations, and other information will be displayed automatically once the card is scanned. This will help control traffic rules violators. The DoTM has already distributed nearly 200,000 smart driving licences in Bagmati zone. The Asian Development Bank has been assisting in this initiative towards digitalization of the driving licences.
