The election of a new prime minister was needed following the resignation of incumbent Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’. Sher Bahadur Deuba, president of the Nepali Congress party is the only candidate to run for the election of prime minister. Deuba will succeed Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda as Nepal’s Prime Minister if elected.

The parliamentary voting to elect Deuba as the prime minister of Nepal had to be deferred till Tuesday as the CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli had threatened to disrupt the House proceedings against the re-polling ordered in Bharatpur metropolitan city.

Prachanda’s daughter Renu Dahal is contesting for the post of mayor from the constituency. The counting of the votes was put off after members of her party allegedly tore up ballots during the process. The Election Commission has ordered a re-polling there.

Veteran politicians held talks to address the situation and run the voting to elect Deuba as the 40th prime minister of Nepal’s young democracy. But with the House meeting put off, Deuba should wait until tomorrow to be elected as prime minister.

Deuba, 70, served as the Prime Minister from 1995 to 1997, from 2001 to 2002, and from 2004 to 2005.
