Kathmandu-based Yeti Airlines is working with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) as part of its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) promotion programme under 2030 Agenda.

The partnership focuses on promotion of SDG-branding icons, creating awareness campaigns, concrete plans for the achievement of SDGs.

These aircraft will take the action plans related to SDGs and all the related messages to all parts of the country where aircraft provide a vital transport and connectivity.

According to UN, this partnership between UNDP and Yeti Airlines, in addition to the SDG-branded aircraft, includes the ‘Goals’ features on boarding passes and airport shuttle buses, information leaflets on sustainable development and social media campaigns along with a link on the airline’s website for donating to UNDP programmes in country.

“This is a powerful example to show the world that in partnership with the private sector, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development can really take off,” said Renaud Meyer, the UNDP Country Director for Nepal announcing the new aircraft livery.

He further lauded the initiative saying, ““We are very pleased to see these airplanes flying in Nepali skies, spreading messages on how we can tackle some of the world’s biggest challenges.”

Apart from that, the partnership also intends to involve stakeholders and advocates in implementation process, create innovative and sustainable business models in the aviation and tourism industries, among others to help Nepal meet key SDG indicators related to climate change, gender equality and poverty reduction.

SDGs, adopted by UN Member States in 2015, allow partnerships with the private sector in mobilizing resources, technology and innovation to take forward the implementation of the SDG agenda.

“In Nepal, we have been exploring ways in which UN could help the local businesses grow more responsible and SDG-friendly,” said Mr. Meyer and also informed that more such joint initiatives will be implemented to help the country meet its 2030 agenda.

Nepal is facing challenges pertaining to transitional justice despite the presence of related laws in the country, says According to Amnesty International’s Regional Director for South Asia Biraj Patnaik.

Citing his close observation on the country’s new constitution-making process, Birah said that Nepal has one of the most progressive constitutions in South Asia, particularly in terms of political, economic and social rights.

However, on the flip side, the constitution fails to meet aspirations of many local communities, he added.

On the overall status of transitional justice in Nepal, Biraj said, “What is happening in Nepal is too little and too late”.

In this regard, he also expressed Amnesty International’s readiness to support Nepal in overcoming related challenges. “We will engage with the process of transitional justice that Nepal is currently undertaking. We would support in every way we can to bring out the cases of human rights violation and to do facts finding that supports the process,” says Biraj.

He also opined that Nepal has a fairly independent judiciary that gives hope about the betterment of transitional justice.

It is noteworthy that the country has two laws-Truth and Reconciliation Commission and Commission of Investigation on Enforce Disappeared Persons currently in place with regard to transitional justice and human rights, since almost nine years.

The Government of Nepal has invited two UN Special Rapporteurs to take a stock of human rights situation in Nepal and report them back to the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) and the UN General Assembly (UNGA).

According to the Nepali Foreign Ministry spokesperson, the Ministry has already written to UNHRC in Geneva to send two special rapporteurs to analyze rights issues in Nepal pertaining to food and women violence.

The Ministry also welcomed UN’s official check on issues related to migration.

The special official on food-related rights would assess Nepal in terms of UN’s Right to Food that demands regular, permanent and unrestricted access to food in sufficient quantity and adequate quality.

Whereas, the other official would assess rights violation and violence against women, related causes and consequences, in Nepal.

This will be conveyed to the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights through Nepal’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations Office and other international organizations in Geneva today, said the Ministry in its yesterday’s release.

Prior to this, UNHRC had asked Nepal regarding sending of its special rapporteurs to the country. However, Nepal did not approve UN’s request due to internal issues.
