]]>The height of Mt. Everest is 8,848 meters (29,029 feet), as per the first scientific measurement conducted in the year 1856. The Department of Survey has started its own measurement to ascertain the actual height of the Mt. Everest. The new study will reveal the actual height of the world’s tallest peak along with the impact of climate change on the mountain.
There are assumptions that the height of the peak could have changed because of a powerful earthquake in 2015, with a possible shift in its geographic position. However, there is no scientific research to verify these assumptions. Many international institutions and India wanted to measure the height, but the government decided to do it on its own.
Nepali technicians, who started working from Udayapur district last week, are expected to complete the task of measurement in a couple of years with the assistance of the international experts and scientists.
Survey Department said that it will seek the help from international experts, scientists and others with experience in high altitude measurements. It will also involve International Association of Geodesy technical support.
The tools like GPS, gravity survey measurement, vertical height measurement and mathematical survey will be used to make the results reliable and globally accepted.
The government has allotted Rs 20 million and will provide more funds as needed.
