Following the trend in the recent past, Nepal is becoming one of the biggest sources for foreign education and India has been one of the major education destinations for Nepali students aspiring to pursue a higher education abroad.

Other Education Hotspots for Nepal

Besides India, Australia and the United States are emerging as major hubs for Nepali students aiming to pursue education in foreign countries.

Recent statistics indicate an increase of 46% in the number of Nepali students who applied for courses in Australia during July-December 2017. Among the 190,000 members who applied for courses abroad, Nepal registered an enrollment of 12,000 students in Australia alone.

Statistics as of November 2017

According to the 2017 Open Doors Report by the Institute of International Education (IIE) and the US Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (USDSBECA), educational institutes for higher education in the US have seen a note-worthy increase in the number of Nepali students.

Among the 1.08 million international students in the US, 11,607 students belonged to Nepal alone amounting to a 20% percent contribution.

Deciding Factor and Resultant Figures

Prakash Pandey, President of Educational Consultancies Association of Nepal says, “Nepal basically lacks proper education policies. As a result, Nepali students have been investing a huge sum of money in higher education abroad.”

The first nine months of the FY 2017-18 experienced an all-time high in terms of expenditures made by Nepali students in other countries. Around Rs 27.99 billion was spent in the given year as compared with Rs 25.3 billion spent in the same period of the previous year, resulting in a 11.9% increase.
