The Rastriya Janata Party Nepal (RJPN) has desperately tried to prevent candidacy registration in various districts on Sunday, the last day to register candidacy for the second phase of local elections scheduled for June 28.

After the clashes with police earlier on Saturday, the RJPN called for a district banda (general strike) and stopped all four-wheelers on the roads except two-wheelers.

Sub-inspector Rajendra Chaudhary said that the police took under control five RJPN’s protestors along with party’s district chairman Puran Chaudhary. In the meantime, 14 cadres were arrested a day earlier on Saturday.

To avoid any adverse situation, the candidates went to district election office early in the morning to register their candidacies. They are contesting for various positions like ward chairman, rural municipality chief and deputy chief in the district’s seven local units – three municipalities and four rural municipalities.

RJPN cadres have set on fire a government office, torched a motorcycle, and vandalized the Sahayogi Development Bank in Jaleswar, according to the District Police Office (DPO).

The general strike called by RJPN affected normal life in the district. The strong presence of security personnel in various areas has prevented unpleasant incidents during the strike.
