Speaking at a virtual meeting hosted by the Health Journalist Forum on May 28, Foreign Affairs Minister exaggerated that the Nepali Government would have a breakthrough in COVID-19 vaccine procurement in the next 15 days.

He claimed that the government had launched numerous initiatives with foreign countries to import vaccines and received some positive responses.

Even President Bhandari had penned letters to superpower countries, including the USA, the UK, Russia, and India, to provide vaccines.

However, all the efforts are in vain as Nepal has not received anything except the confirmation of the receipt of the letters.

“The president’s letters cannot push the purchase process forward; they are just a request,” according to an official at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. “Therefore, you don’t need to expect more. The government has to act for purchase.”

In yet another attempt, PM Oli, in an interview with US media outlet CNBC, has pleaded the international community to assist Nepal by providing COVID-19 vaccines.

“The coronavirus cases have fallen by 75%, and the government is working to control the contagion in other parts of the country,” said PM Oli.

Though the cases have declined, immediate vaccination is imperative, he mentioned.

He further informed that the Nepali Government is targeting to vaccinate all the citizens by the end of 2021 if adequate vaccines were available.
