Nepal<\/a> are the top five countries contributing to the area\u2019s migrant population.<\/p>\n“It is becoming increasingly clear that the current high rates of population growth are putting even more pressure on NSW, particularly in some suburbs. We need to look at encouraging people to consider living in different parts of Sydney, the surrounding regions and in regional NSW,” said Ms Berejiklian.<\/p>\n
While \u2018China\u2019 topped the list of migrants to the eastern suburbs, Hornsby and North Sydney, \u2018England\u2019 is the second-highest contributor with its significant proportion of new arrivals.<\/p>\n
According to a 2016 census, \u2018Iran\u2019 was identified as the top source of migrants settling in Ryde.<\/p>\n
Macquarie University Demography expert Nick Parr identified temporary visa holders such as \u2018students\u2019 as the reason behind the high rate of net overseas migration.<\/p>\n
“The numbers who enter on temporary visas and later gain permanent residence are substantial,” Parr said.<\/p>\n
Parr noted that the majority of new settlers to eastern suburbs, north shore, Parramatta and Ryde were skilled workers.<\/p>\n
Likewise, Sydney\u2019s \u2018inner south-west\u2019, areas surrounding Bankstown and Hurstville received a majority of \u2018migrant families\u2019.<\/p>\n
The Demography expert attributed the migrant population increase in the eastern suburbs, Hornsby, North Sydney and Ryde to low birth rates in the area.<\/p>\n
In comparison, Bankstown and Parramatta have \u2018relatively high birth rates\u2019, he said.<\/p>\n
According to the federal government report, new arrivals accounted for 54 percent of increase in Australia\u2019s population between 1996-2016 with Sydney alone recording two-thirds of the population growth!<\/p>\n
A Department of Home Affairs spokesperson revealed that three-quarters of Australia\u2019s population growth was in Melbourne, Sydney and south-east Queensland.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Adelaide, Darwin and Tasmania are having a relatively lower population.<\/p>\n
Consequences of High-Population<\/strong>
\nThe Department spokesperson also said that strong population growth also posed serious challenges to infrastructure capacity and contributed to congestion in big cities.<\/p>\n“If not appropriately managed, these challenges can diminish quality of life in the most rapidly growing areas,” he said.<\/p>\n
The alarming increase in population numbers calls for curbing Australia\u2019s migrant intake to ease pressure on Melbourne and Sydney.<\/p>\n
In November 2018, Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced a reduction in the numbers of migrants to Australia on grounds that \u2018roads are clogged\u2019 and buses, trains & schools were full.<\/p>\n
In October 2018, Ms Berejiklian said that Australia\u2019s migrant intake should be halved to 45,000 people, a year after the declaration that the national level of immigration was \u2018about right\u2019.<\/p>\n
