Nepal Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli received a rare international honor for his efforts towards development of his country.

In a recent update, the UN University of Peace conferred an Honorary Doctorate to PM Oli (‘doctor honoris causa‘) for his relentless work towards establishment of peace and democracy in Nepal, at a special convocation in San Jose.

“For me, receiving this honor is an acknowledgement of my country’s successful peace process and appreciation of peace-loving Nepali people. Moreover, with humility, I must submit that this recognition is bestowed on a citizen of the country that gave birth to Lord Buddha- an apostle of peace,” said Oli on receiving the honor.

In this regard, he also commended the UN University for its contribution in promoting the culture of peace & harmony and understanding & tolerance, globally.

Addressing the gathering, Oli further highlighted the significance of peace in the present global scenario and highlighted the evolution of Nepal’s peace process since 2006.

“Our conflict resolution experience and the peace process can provide an important case study for research works including in this university,” said Oli.

Citing the success of the long-awaited three-tier elections of the country, he said, “More than 41 per cent of women have been elected in the representative bodies at all levels. Our experience is a testimony of the fact that strong political will and constitutional guarantee can be instrumental in empowering women to ensure their legitimate share as well as in making democracy inclusive.”

The absence of peace will hinder the process of investment in development, Oli added.

Mihir Kanade, Head of the Department of International Law and Human Rights at the University, lauded Oli for the award stating that the Prime Minister has been recognized for his contribution to Nepal’s peace process.

As part of his visit to San Jose on October 01, 2018, Oli held discussions with President Carlos Alvarado Quesada, where both sides discussed on ways to enhance bilateral cooperation between the two countries.
