Eighth-grader Nihar Janga from Texas stunned the world when he won the 31st Annual National Geographic GeoBee competition on May 22, 2019.
A student from Austin’s Canyon Ridge Middle School, Janga was also among the top ten finalists in the 2018 GeoBee and winner of the 2016 National Spelling Bee.
The event was conducted by the National Geographic Society at its headquarters in Washington, where it also held the first-ever GeoChallenge national-level competition.
The competition was held to draw innovative solutions from young brains for modern problems. This years GeoChallenge was held with the theme – Plastic Pollution in our Waterways
