Nepal Weekly Round-up: July 20-26, 2019

Nepal has been abuzz with news on rising number of flood and landslide casualties.Rising river levels have caused disruption on some roads in Nepal, among other severe consequences of natural calamities.

Meanwhile, the country has also seen some achievements and developments on the sports, tourism, politics and bilateral fronts.

Kathmandu Metropolitan Traffic Police Division Collects NPR 310.56 Mn

Kathmandu Metropolitan Traffic Police

The Metropolitan Traffic Police Division (MTPD) collected NPR 310.56 million in fines from Kathmandu Valley in the FY 2018-19. According to MTPD Chief and Senior SP Basant Kumar Pant, a total of 481,075 small and big vehicles in Bhaktapur, Lalitpur and  Kathmandu districts were fined for disobeying traffic rules.

Among various reasons, violators were fined for bypassing traffic signals, driving under alcohol influence, disregard for lane discipline, parking in no-parking zones and misuse of vehicle horns.


NRB Makes PAN Number Mandatory for Loans Above NPR 5 Mn

NRB Makes PAN Number Mandatory

The Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) has made it a compulsory for those seeking a loan above NPR 5 million, to produce PAN number. As per the monetary policy revealed on July 24, 2019, banks and financial institutions will ask for an individual’s PAN number before issuing a loan. Earlier, this norm was limited to individuals seeking loan above NPR 10 million.


Nepal Drops 1 Spot in FIFA Rankings

Nepal Drops FIFA Rankings

Nepal slipped down by a spot to 164 in the FIFA rankings as of July 2019. During the month of June, 2019, the Nepal national football team was at the 165th position. However, it has maintained the third position in the South Asia rankings and 35th in the AFC rankings.

Nepal Participate Asia-Pacific Body Building Championship

Three Nepali bodybuilders have been shortlisted to represent Nepal at the Asia-Pacific Body Building Championship-2019. According to Nepal Body Building and Fitness Association, the three winners of the 12th South Asian Body Building Championship will be sent for the championship to be held in Bangkok, Thailand between August 16-18, 2019.

Nepalgunj Sub-metropolis Introduces Women-friendly Buses

The Nepalgunj Sub-metropolis has decide to operate women-friendly public buses between Nepalgunj and Duduwa, Janaki, Kohlapur and Khajura among other routes. According to Sub-metropolis Chief Administration Officer Hari Pyakurel, seven buses have been purchased at the cost of NPR 35 million for this purpose. Currently, the process to formulate the working procedure for operating the buses is underway.

Miss Tourism 2019 Audition Kicks Off

The Miss Tourism 2019 contest auditions have kicked off with the aim to contribute to the growth of Nepal’s tourism sector, create awareness on tourism’s importance for Nepal and promote Visit Nepal 2020. Miss Tourism 2019 organizers have already shortlisted potential candidates for the competition. The fourth season of Miss Tourism 2019 has witnessed an overwhelming number of young contestants applying to the pageant.

The pageant’s finale will be held on Sharawan 25, 2076 BS. The event will be judged by Tourism professionals Khum Bahadur Subedi and Sagar Pandey.
