In a happy turn of events, Nepal has received its second-largest grant of USD 27.4 million under the Green Climate Fund (GCF) to address the climate change issues in the country.
The GCF had decided to provide the funding to the project entitled “Improving Climate Resilience of Vulnerable Communities and Ecosystems in the Gandaki River Basin, Nepal” during the 26th board meeting on August 19, 2020.
According to Dr. Maheshwor Dhakal, Chief of the Climate Change Unit under the Ministry of Forest and Environment, the funding will be utilized for initiating basic project activities to address climate-resilient issues in the Gandaki River Basin.
The Project Focuses On:
The project will be implemented in 19 districts of Province 3, Province 5, and Gandaki Province. It aims to establish field schools to teach sustainable agriculture practices and agroforestry techniques to local people.
Meanwhile, Dr. Prahlad Thapa, Country Representative of IUCN, urged all three levels of government, major stakeholders, and private agencies to help the government meet the set targets of the grant.
Earlier in November 2019, the GCF agreed to provide USD 39.3 million out of an estimated USD 47.3 million required for a project aimed at helping people of Nepal’s Chure region to recover from shocks and stresses caused by climate change.
The GCF was established as part of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
