At the ongoing 17th FINA World Championships in Budapest, Hungary, two Nepali swimmers, Anubhav Subba and Shuvam Shrestha, set new national marks in the 50m butterfly and 100m breaststroke events respectively.

Subba completed the 50m butterfly event in 28.26 seconds and finished fourth in Heat 1 on Sunday. He is also scheduled to participate in 100m freestyle event on Wednesday.  The earlier national record in the 50m butterfly category was held by Chandra Singh Mahato since 2009.

In the 100m breaststroke event, Shuvam Shrestha swam in 1 minute and 11.34 seconds and finished sixth in the field. Shuvam, who broke the 13-year-old national record set by Alish Shrestha at the Athens Olympics in 2004, will next participate in the 50m breaststroke event on Saturday

In the women’s section, Sofia Shah and Tisa Shakya are representing Nepal. While Shah will participate in the 50m and 100m freestyle events, Shakya will take part in the 100m breaststroke and 200m freestyle events.

A four-member Nepali team, comprising women swimmers Sofia Shah and Tisha Shakya and men swimmers Anubhav Subba and Suvam Shrestha, is leaving for Hungary on Wednesday to take part in the 17th FINA World Championships in Budapest. They are being accompanied by coach Ratna Lal Maharjan.

Shah will participate in the women’s 50m and 100m freestyle events, while Shakya will swim in the 100m breaststroke and 200m freestyle events. In the men’s section, Subba will take part in the 50m butterfly and 100m freestyle while Shrestha will compete in the 50m and 100 breaststroke events.

Coach Maharjan said that while the team is not expecting to win any medals in the event in which the world’s best swimmers are taking part, they are hopeful of breaking a few national records and utilize the learning opportunities that would be available.
