Sher Bahadur Deuba, veteran politician was elected Nepal’s prime minister for the fourth time with the support of nearly two-thirds of the members of the 593-strong Parliament. Deuba, 70, Nepali Congress president reclaimed the position 12 years after he was sacked by King Gyanendra Shah in 2005. He was the only candidate to stand in the election for the post of prime minister as the main opposition Communist Party of Nepal-UML and other parties were unable to put up candidates. Soon after his election, Deuba said that he will focus on holding elections to local government bodies and implementing the new Constitution. Deuba received full political support during the voting, allowing him to become Nepal’s 40th prime minister. He earlier served as prime minister during 1995-97, 2001-02 and 2004-05. Deuba may form a small Cabinet and some Madhesi parties are likely to join the alliance. He will lead Nepal for nine months and specialists say that this could be the most difficult phase of his political career.
