Surpassing the 60 percent target set by the Supreme Court, the Revenue Tribunal settled 69 percent of the pending cases in the 2016-17 fiscal year.

The tribunal has settled 945 out of 1,376 pending cases in the last fiscal year.

“The number of settlements made in the fiscal year 2016-17 is also the highest in the tribunal’s 43-year history,” said Basanta Jung Thapa, Under-Secretary of the Revenue Tribunal.

Noting that none of these cases is more than two years old, Thapa said, “After Chairman Dilli Raj Acharya assumed office, his first priority was to settle cases more than two years old.”

While the tribunal’s jurisdiction is limited to hearing appeals and petitions on revenue-related cases, the government would collect Rs 10 billion if these cases fail to reach the apex court.

Among the 1,376 cases, 699 cases had been pending for the last six years, and 677 new cases were registered in the 2016-17 fiscal year. The remaining 431 cases were carried over to the current fiscal year.

Most of the cases (451 out of 945 cases) were disputes with the customs office over customs duty, while 269 cases fall under income tax bracket and 188 related to Value Added Tax.
