Towards constructing a new building for mourners, the Pashupati Area Development Trust (PADT) demolished a centuries-old temple of archeological significance on Saturday.

The demolished structure was one of the four Shiva temples at the Agnihotri Yagayashala of Bankali in the Pashupati temple premises.

Annoyed at PADT’s move, locals questioned the Trust for taking such decision without any consultation with the Department of Archeology and in the absence of any affidavit.

“We will file a complaint against it at the CIAA and Department of Archaeology,” said Jaladaraj Baidya, a local. He also questioned about idols inside the temple and riches beneath the land the idol was erected from.

Baidya said the temple had only one idol, i.e of Lord Bhairav, as recorded by the Trust.

He also informed a news agency about the trust’s decision to rebuild the temple upon protests against the construction of building for mourners.

PADT’s Executive Director Ramesh Kumar Uprety said the demolition was done following the demand for construction of building for mourners. He also informed that the temple had nothing of archeological significance inside, and only had a pile of logs meant for Agnihotrashala.

The Archeology department officials, who went for on-site visit, refused to comment on demolition.
